Title: A Very Good Read
Post by: Dichotomy on March 21, 2007, 10:38:45 AM
Article (http://men.msn.com/articlees.aspx?cp-documentid=3042293&page=1)

Whether you agree with the writer or not I'd say it's a very descriptive narrative to people, like myself, who have never been in the situation.

I know what the author is talking about.  On several occassions, after ending a long stressful time period, I feel bored and unexcited.  I think this can be attritubed to an actual physiological cause, an abundance of certain inhibitory receptors in the brain.

it really sheds light on the behavior of someone close to me when he came back from his first tour and gives me some insight on how to deal with him when he comes home this time right AFTER I cook him a huge steak with garlic potatoes, corn on the cob, and hand him a 44 oz mug of cold beer.

on his first tour I knew when he'd be landing but he told me not to meet him at the airport.  Turns out he was meeting a female online acquaintance for a little parking lot recreation.  Oh well gave me more time to ge the party set up for his friends and family.

I cooked a bunch of 8 oz filet mignons and assorted sides.  We he got to my place, after saying hi to everyone, taking a shower, and stealing one of my shirts, he grabbed a filet that I slow cooked for 2 hours over mesquite smoke, threw it between two pieces of bread, slathered ketsup all over it, and downed it in about three bites.  About 3/4 of the guests were going 'dude'.  I was LMAO...

When he gets home on leave this time I'm going to have the filet, on a hamburger bun, with a ketsup bottle ready for him :)

Great read.

Two quotes come to mind which seem to sum it all up

"It is good war is so terrible lest we grow too fond of it"

"Compared to war, All other forms of human endeavor shrink to insignificance"

This is typical of adrenaline junkies. Peoples reactions / actions are all related to chemical reactions, 'they' say the most sophisticated pharmacy in the universe is inside our heads... some people become 'addicted' to adrenaline rushes and become depressed or experience other mental manifestations (guilt, extreme boredom) if they are denied.

We used to get 'training' lectures on how to deal with this, which was really the Dept saying "you don't need choir practice every single day after work to wind down"... for many guys it becomes impossible to sleep after a busy night without a few beers.

It's when the chemicals in your brain form a pattern in line with memories that the issues start.
