1) I start with 57 programs running with MacAfee on. I seem to remember conversation about a program that will selectively start only certain processes at boot up.
2) Is there a way to turn MacAfee off?
Thanks

FSAutoStart or flight sim auto start. Dont know how it handles Mcafee.

FS autostart will allow you to atop and start a program,or stop completely. If you set the program to stop and start as soon as you exit AH your A/V program will start up again.
If you look through this forum,Homeboy, has a link to FSauto and a link that explains how to configure it.
Hope this helps

Here (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/FSAutoStart.shtml) is the link to it.

Is there any way to simple stop programs running upon start-up, without using a program to do it?
Ie, is there a function in windows that allows you to do this?
I am simply referring to annoying **** like Quicktime, etc that simply start up at every boot. I use these programs rarely.
Thanks

McAfee has a new update with a constant scanner that runs in the background that I can not turn off even in the services part of windows.
If anyone has any ideas or knows to turn this off that would be great!
That crushes my frame rate........

I recommend you spend some time in:
Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services
(WinXP)
and study what all this stuff is that is starting up. You will probably find a bunch of junk that starts up that you don't give a hoot about. You should also take a look at "Add/Remove Programs" and see what you have installed. I'll bet there is junk installed that you don't want either. You'll be surprised what you find in there.
Actually, one of the advantages of setting up fsautostart is it forces you to analysize your machine for freeloaders.
Good luck to you. Trust me, this homework assignment will be good for you. :)

also, if you have a bunch of programs that load up and put an icon in the task bar by your clock, you might want to change the setting on those. Most of them you can right click on and go to a "properties" tab or a settings tab and turn off the "load on boot up" option, to stop them from loading everytime you boot up.

You can also go to Start>Run and type MSCONFIG. That will bring up a dialogue where you can disable some startup programs.

But never delete MSMessinger from the startup group or programs file (add-remove programs). It will usually clone itself- did on my last two PCs and this one.
I lit FSAuto start handel it or you can right click the icon next to the clock and select exit.

Msconfig will only keep messenger from loading at startup. You just uncheck it. If you want to get rid of it I believe you can do that from the "Add/Remove Windows Components" portion of Add/Remove Programs.

Well on the Compaq and both HPs that I've had, it will duplicate itself to get back in the start-up group weather you uncheck it in msconfig or use add-remove. It does it (I think) from the backup original OS install folder that is thus far locked for me.
