Title: SKUZZY HELP..size of pre-loded textures with satellite internet
Post by: falcon23 on March 22, 2007, 05:55:02 PM
I pre-load textures now that I have a gig set in my computer..But I have a question concerning the loading.

I first go online and open the game,I then click on arena I want and it pre-loads textures..A bit slow, say like 15 seconds or so,(this is not the problem),then it opens into arena..

Now lets say I am playing, and I lose connection. Now I click on the respective arena again, and of course it pre-loads textures, but much, much quicker,(again this is not what concerns me)..What concerns me is...And I may be wrong,is that the pre-load is about 400 or so megs??

Another thing I would like to know is...Whatever size the pre-load is,when I get back online, and it is pre-loading again..is this actual DOWNLOAD from the web???I ask because I am on satellite and they have a FAP..Fair access policy, and limit how much bandwidth I can have each month..So If the texture is pre-loading everytime, and it is  like 400 megs..I may have to turn it off..there are some days I can disconnect 3-5 times and I go in and restart...And of course the textures pre-load...If they are actually around 400 megs, and I am downloading them everytime I reconnect,I am using alot of FAP...

                                        Thanks,
                                               Kevin

Well rosco,I appreciate the ummm...welll.err....extortion ...  But I was mainly speaking of pre-loading textures, and not skins,I do have pre-loading of skins turned off in the game,so I do not recieve them..But I am worried about the pre-loading of textures..If this is the same thing, please excuse my ignorance, and I may put a check in the mail..:rofl

                                      Thanks,Kevin

oh duh ... (i was stuck on stupid)

As for preloading textures  that may help it may not ... depends on how much pc you have.  you'll have to ask Skuzzy on how much loads when you connect .

As far as I know, it does NOT download the preload.. it loads it from your hard drive into your memory.

The reason it goes so much quicker if you leave and come back is because it's already still loaded in your memory, so basically it's just verifying that it's all there - which goes much faster.

Hope this answers your questions.

If you are having timeout problems when connecting, then you need to make some adjustments as your computer is taking too long to load the testures.  Which usually means you are going to have other performance issues in the game.  Hence the timeout.  It is a sign.

As an experiment, remove the 'cache' and 'skins' folders from the game's installation folder (default location C:Program Files\HTC\Aces High II).

Start the game, allow it to rebuild the cache and try gettig into the arena.  If you timeout and lose the connection, then adjustments are in order.

In the gmae's "Video Settings", set the "Maximum Texture Size" to 256.  Allow the cache to rebuild.  See if you get connected.  If you do, then you are fine.  If not then something else is amiss.  A computer with 1GB of RAM should hjave no troubles preloading the textures into system RAM, unless something is slowing the computer down dramatically.

Anti-virus programs would be the first culprit.  Nasty.  Tons of overhead.  Unfortunately, they are getting very, very intrusive and almost impossible to disable.

You may need to defragment your hard drive.  This can cause slow load times as well.

Nope , just to show you , start the game in offline mode , it preloads from your computers hard drive . It in no way has to connect to the internet to grab any textures to preload.

What skuzzy is talking about is if your computer is really slow pre loading the textures, it can sometimes cause a timeout in the internet connection when connecting to online play .

Trust me, if you were downloading the textures from online upon entereing an arena, you'd be there overnight.

The textures are preloading from hard drive to the system RAM. RAM is much, much, much (much) faster than any hard drive. With preloading disabled, every time the game needs a texture, it has to dig through the hard drive and find it. With the textures in RAM, they are all sorted nicely the way HT set up his game and the way the game wants them and can be found extremely quickly.

The only times this game is uploading/downloading from the internet is when you're in the lobby, using the patch download thing, all the way in an arena (you've seen the tower), or on the "select an arena" screen.
