Ever since I've upgraded my system, I've had problems getting AH just to run without locking up my computer.
I'm using the 84 nVidia drivers recommended from my last post, along with the AMD optimizer for my new AMD64 X2 4200+.
Any other recommendations? Now nothing works. Yet Aces High is the only sim that won't play. All others work fine:
- Half Life 2 / Counter Strike: Source / Day of Defeat Source
- Battlefield 2142
- Armed Assault
When I install the older video drivers, should I run the detonator destroyer first then install the older ones?
-
Still no joy. I can't even load the game.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!
-
I'm in a similar situation.
The game doesnt hard lock up though and i've tried so many different things to try and sort it out. As you have said other games work fine with no problems at all. My next big hope is to try the windows 98 compatibility mode with AH to see if that does anything for me.
My problem is random graphic anamolies that get sorted by alt tabbing and re loading the game back in. Also when i end up back in game the lost udp switching to TCP message is there. I've tried my old usb modem but does exactly the same as my new router. Latest nvidia 8800 drivers, dual core instructions followed, PCI bus set to 128 from 64. Everything that people have suggested but the same thing still happens.
Just annoying as hell because it will work fine for hours of play and do it randomly.
-
try older video driver
-
TB if that was directed at me the 8800 GTS card has the ones that came with CD, 97.92 i think, another set and the latest 100x beta ones that i'm using at the moment.
On both the same thing happens so i'm at a loss until they release a set that work or some geeky types actually write a decent set of drivers because Nvidia are lacking in that department.
I'm sure AH isnt on the top of their lists to sort any problems out with....

What are the other spec's of your pc? I see you have installed the AMD dual core optimizer , but did you install the amd drivers too? Ruk

Silly question, but can you check your voltage, either through a mobo sensor software, or through the BIOS?
I had hard lockups once. Sound would repeat forever, last frame on the screen would stay there. No hotkey buttons would work, no CTRL ALT DEL, total hard lockup.
It turns out part of the problem was related to my PSU being a total "POS" -- overvolting my +12 and WOEfully undervolting my +3. Indirectly, I solved the problem by disabling the onboard NIC and using a PCI NIC (I guess that reduced the voltage requirements somehow, it was pretty messed up).
Anyways, when I got a good PSU later, the onboard NIC worked fine with no problems, no lockups, no nada no nothing.
Just thought I'd put it out there.
-
Thanks for the tips guys...
PSU - ENERMAX 520w. Cripies - that's half a kilowatt. Bloody thing glows in the dark ... :)
Ruk - what do you mean 'other' AMD drivers? Such as? Perhaps that is the issue?
Twinboom- I've tried from 8X.XX to 10X.XX - all with the same effects. The clipboard will start spinning and then it goes dark and locks up when I load up the game.
Bruv - at least you can play for hours... I can't even get it to load... :)
-
Their is a AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP , and a AMD Dual-Core Optimizer. Both need to be loaded for stability and can be found HERE (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html).
Another thing i have found is if you have the dual core optimizer installed and the MS hotfix Patch: KB896256 installed , it will cause crashing and lockups in AH . Good Luck Rukee
-
I run the X800 XT, and I use the 6.14.0010.6648 drivers and have no trouble what so ever. Even with the hirez pack FRs run in the 70's with ease and no anomalies.

Removing the MS Patch KB896256 as 38ruk suggests above has lowered my lockups from just about every sortie to the rare lockup. Sometimes i can log on and go 3,4 5 sorties, log off without an issue. But other times I still get the out of the blue hard lockup where the video freezes and the sound keeps going and I have to reset the computer to get out of it.
edit:
Just wondering if the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP works with a AMD Opteron™ Processor. Is it for both types of dual cores, is the X2 the same as the Opteron as far as this driver is concerned?

well the win98 compatibility mode hasnt done the trick.
So has to be driver related somehow (even though other games work fine)
Homeboy if your in on this thread I would like to know what settings you are running the game with?
Driver version? tried 97.92 and the other two currently on 100.85
Hi res pack 1024?
any Anti Aliasing?
anisoptric filtering?
V-sync on or off?
Unlimited frames?
1680x1054
I havent pre loaded any skins or textures.
Thanks in advance

Sorry you're still struggling Bruv. I guess I'm just lucky. I usually don't get lucky (good luck anyway). I haven't done anything special. I do have all my settings in game to max (animated water, terrain distances, etc).
Driver version? tried 97.92 and the other two currently on 100.85
I'm running 97.92. I didn't even know you could run 100. I thought 100 was explicitly for Vista. Hmm, learned something new there.
Hi res pack 1024?
Yes, hires pack
any Anti Aliasing?
4X I think. I use "Balance between performance and quality" setting. I think that means 4X AA.
anisoptric filtering?
Again, I think "balanced" means "Yes" to this setting
V-sync on or off?
Ditto. "Yes" I think
Unlimited frames?
Yes. However, it seems to be treated as set to 60fps. It always seems to stay right on 60 even though I have the setting on unlimited. I normally set mine to 60 but haven't done that at this point.
1680x1054
yes. (1600x1024 actually)
I havent pre loaded any skins or textures.
I preload everything
Thanks in advance
Bruv

I doubt this helps you but I hope something in what I've told you does. What about power? Do you have a good PSU? Is your 8800 getting proper power? Cooling? Any issues there? How about Windows Update? Are you running the very latest updates on everything? (SP 2, etc.) I keep my machine updated with everything MS offers (critical updates anyway).
Good luck to you my friend!

Hi again,
PSU is ENERMAX Liberty 620 Watt which is more than enough.
Cooling I have an antec 900 case and it has huge bellybutton fans in there from all angles. Temperatures all read fine.
In response to your question about getting a max of 60 FPS you will only get more if you turn off the vertical sync. Havent played with this much as its nice and smooth at 60. Can go between 110-150 using 300mb vid memory.
Latest updates from MS (for all the good they do)
I will try loading in the textures again but dont think it will make a difference.
-
Sounds like you've tried everything that you can. I'm sure you have you contacted Skuzzy directly on this. You might try rattling his chain again and see if he has any new thoughts.
It always seems to be the thing you rule out or don't consider in the first place. I wish I could realize what that might be here. It reminds me of the months that I tried to solve my disco problem. I ripped my machine apart and rebuilt everything several times to no avail. It ended up being my router which I never even thought about. I kept wanting to blame my machine and/or my ISP. I ended up flashing my router firmware (for a completely different reason) and that fixed my discos. Go figure. Seems rather obvious to me now.
BTW, thanks for that tip on Vsync. I confess to being completely intimidated by all that video speak stuff and just look for easy settings. I would love to find somewhere people show how to set up all that stuff. Can't seem to find anything like that.
-
I tried skuzzy he basically said the nvidia drivers are crap but if your using them trouble free its a biatch!

Take a look at this forum I started about my lockups with my 7600 GS. May work for you.

Realize one thing:
I built this machine from scratch. I reused nothing (except monitor, dvd, case). The HDs were brand new. Completely new install. Could it be that your machine is a "trail of updates" and that there is old stuff laying around somewhere? Just a thought.
I did however, copy my old Aces High II tree from my old machine over to my new one. Actually, I installed AH on the new machine (to get it registered properly in the registry) then deleted the directory tree before doing the copy.
-
I built it from scratch too homeboy.
only thing i copied in were the sounds and settings folder.
Fresh downloads of AH and hi res pack.
On my next day off i'm going to have another serious crack at it. Just annoying as hell that AH is the only game it does it with. I just gave up in the end. I still play fine for hours but it may do the glitch thing twice a day. As long as i'm not in the middle of a furball I can put it on autopilot, alt tab and it re-loads after 30 secs or so....
Specs:
E6600
enermax 620w liberty PSU
2 gig ddr2-800
250gb HD
Asus cant remember the board
8800GTS 640mb
22" LCD widescreen

Just a note guys -
When talking about PSUs, wattage does NOT matter nearly as much as the quality of the PSU in terms of its 12v and 5v rails and the Amperage on those rails...
For example, I chucked a 500W 'el-cheapo' RAIDMAX for a 350W Sparkle PSU and saw an instant increase in stability in-game. My PC now hardlocks maybe once every 2 months versus 1-2 times per week.
Read up here for more info...
http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/t136602.html
I would highly suggest a higher quality PSU at lower wattage thank a 650W whatever PSU.
I do not know the specs the squality attributes of the aforementioned ENERMAX PSUs, so please do not take this post as meaning your PSU should be replaced...they may be just fine...
I just wanted to point this out since I had alot of hardlock problems until i swapped out my PSU for a hiogher quality one.
-
Good point about the PSU. Dirty power can do some strange things to your system. Maybe you have a flaky PSU. I doubt that though. There is a better possibility that you have a flaky 8800. Can't rule that out I suppose. I know you say you only see this problem in AH and in no other game, but, if you're like the rest of us, how much time do you really spend in any other game?
Have you tried more "standard" vid resolutions e.g. 1280x1024 or 1024x768? That is one difference between yours and mine. I have just a standard old 19" crt.
Sorry, I know I'm shooting in the dark at this point. Running out of ideas.

Just wondering if the AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP works with a AMD Opteron™ Processor. Is it for both types of dual cores, is the X2 the same as the Opteron as far as this driver is concerned?
That is a good question . IIRC the opterons and X2 have some differences in the memory controllers , other than that i think they support more ram due to being a server chip. I'll have too look around for concrete data cause i read that along time ago .
Source (http://www.devx.com/amd/Article/27340)
All Opteron models come with three HyperTransport links (vs. a single link for Athlon 64). On single-processor Opterons, the links are connect only to the I/O devices. On dual-processing Opterons, one link connects to the other processor, and two links connect to I/O devices. On multi-processing Opterons (for 4- and 8-way configurations) the links can connect to other processors or to I/O devices, as designed by the motherboard manufacturer. When choosing an Opteron processor, the model number indicates whether the chip is 1-, 2-, or multi-way compatible. Figure 1 explains how these model numbers are assigned.
As to RAM, the Opteron processors can support up to eight DIMMs. Using today's most common configuration, this means Opteron systems max out at 8GB of supported RAM per processor. Opteron systems require registered DIMMs, which contain embedded registers to properly marshal data to the processors and circuitry to better propagate the incoming signal to the entire memory module. As a result, registered memory is more reliable and less prone to errors than other memory designs. Registered memory most often is found in servers precisely because of this reliability.
EDIT X 2
Eagler , there is a XP DRIVER espessially made for the Opty , try that and see if it helps .

thanks for the research and info. I do not see the XP driver for an Opteron on the link you provided. I see one for Linux. Can you tell me which one you are refering to?
thanks

In response to casper. I researched the PSU in depth before buying one and I didn't hold back on the money for it (have had issues with el cheapo ones before ;). From all the things I read on it the specs everything is more than enough for a 8800.
Homeboy I can't really try any other resolutions because of the widescreen monitor which the native res is 1680 x 1050. anything else looks silly. I'm all for trying the clipped black bar on sides aspect ratio but don't really know what exact resolution to add into the video file for this.
As I still suspect it to be a driver issue or conflict I went through this morning and removed everything, used driver cleaner and re loaded the CD drivers. Maybe something went funny in the time spent racking my brains out trying all sorts of stuff to get it fixed. Briefly loaded BF2 With 16x AA and everything else maxed and looked so silky smooth. Before with the CD drivers this game would lock up after about 5 minutes of play time. So I must have fixed something but just need more time to test AH.
-
sorry 38ruk misspelled your handle :)
I tried a sortie last night using my trackir and it locked up solid after about 10 minutes of flight...
I read in the sticky in the hardware forum about two AMD optimizers, one dated June 06 and the other Nov 06. It was saying some have issues with the Nov06 rev. I found the June06 version and installed it after uninstalling the Nov06 one I had.
After that change I was able to fly 3 sorties b4 I had to log off without a lockup. Alittle while later I logged in again with the trackir on and was able to get two more sorties in before I had to log. They were lockup free sorties as well.
The June06 version is located on this page (http://driverscollection.com:80/?file_id=35795)
I will keep you posted as to my progress as it is too soon to claim victory :)

Bruv,
This is a little off topic and something for when you've got everything solved. Would you be so kind as to post your graphics settings for your 8800? I have just played around with them a little but don't know what I should set them to. I have opted to use the "Balanced" setting just out of laziness and desire to get up and running. I would like to fine tune my graphics settings though so I get the most out of this card. Not trying to treat you like you're the graphics expert or anything but you seem to understand it better than I do. :D
No rush. Just when you get settled.
thanks

ahh homeboy I'm no geek I know the hardware side and how to adapt the settings. I'm at work now so i will reply :)
Basically Nvidia are a bit odd. if you open up the nvidia control panel you can look up the Aces high profile and play around with some of the settings. I found this a bit weird I used my ATI card for years and their control panel was nicely laid out and you could easily find what your looking for.
A nice program that i downloaded the other day is called 'nhancer' it stores profiles for indivadual games and explains what each setting does.
Basically look for AA (Anti aliasing) 4 times will make stuff look much smoother in game but our card can go up to 16x with different methods of sampling. Anisoptric filtering 16x is max. You could try and play with v-sync turned off to get much higher frame rates but it doesnt look as smooth on my monitor...
-
Hey, great Bruv. Thanks. Looks like nhancer may be all the help I need.

Last ditch effort, try setting your sound hardware acceleration to 3/4 vs Full.

Update.
I believe my problem to be resolved. I logged 9 hours yesterday and the day before without having one gfx glitch.
Was a driver problem after all. When I first set the machine up with the CD drivers ANY game would hard lock up after 5 minutes and AH randomly. After racking my brains out to cure this problem I most likely sorted out whatever the issue was.
I used driver cleaner and re-installed the CD drivers and no more gfx glitches. Also moved RAM into a different slot but I believe it to be me corrupting the drivers when I was losing patience with it...
All Nvidia and AH remarks taken back!
Look forward to killing you all with graphics maxed, smooth and pretty.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Good news! Glad to hear it Bruv. :aok
I'd still like to see your vid settings some time. I spent an entire evening playing with settings using nhancer. I ended up with something very close to what I started out with ("Balanced"). Oh well. You have you texture size set at 1024 right? And all the sliders set to max in game?
Honestly, I couldn't tell that much difference even when I maxed out the graphics settings from a balanced setting. It looks pretty darn good either way. I do get sort of a "twinkle" from the water and ground terrain. It would be nice to tone that down but haven't figured out how.

I have Hi-res 1024,
16xAA
16x anisoptric filtering
v sync on
should be rock solid at or around 60FPS at all times.
everything max in game
I have animated water off because although it looks nice it seems to reflect like glass and I never got used to it. When turn fighting over it sometimes the sea was much closer than i thought it was ;)
I'm just glad its sorted now I will look forward to getting one of the latest graphic intensive games and testing it out properly, AH just doesnt do the card justice at all.
But the reason we put it in was future proofing yes?

Apart the fact that my hijacked thread got one players issue resolved (jk bruv), I still can't play AH with all the settings enabled.
I'm forced to play with 256 textures, hardware accel off, and default video settings. I can tell you that my ATI 9700 pro never had any issues.
Bruv - what VERSION of the drivers are you using? The one that came with the video card?
-
apologies fork! homeboy and myself built nearly the exact same machine around the same time and he gave me confidence to try and sort mine out as his worked ok.
The spinning clipboard problem seems to be related with dual core AMD machines have you followed the link posted above?
My advice in regards to changing between drivers make sure you uninstall the nvidia from add remove programs. reboot into safe mode by hitting f8 on start up run driver cleaner. also do the cab files. restart normally then run your driver CD. also make sure directx is installed properly also.
I have a 8800GTS which can only run 97.28, 97.92, 100x at first use the CD ones.
If its a PCI-E card go into the bios and change PCI latency timer usually default is 64 change it to 128. this has been explained in a diff thread by Kev367th.
-
Note: anisoptric filtering is not used so you can turn it off.

PCI-E video cards DO NOT have latancy timers. This is only effective for AGP cards.

thanks for the tips. will give it a try.

Well... after installing the AMD drivers and then the nVidia drivers that came with my video card, it's running peachy smooth now. How did I do this?
First thing first, I installed Drive Cleaner Pro (2+) and the AMD drivers for dual core XP.
I Then:
a) Went into control panel - Add/Remove Programs.
b) Uninstalled current nVidia Driver
c) Rebooted into Safe Mode
d) Ran Drive Cleaner Pro and uninstalled nVidia and nVidia WDM
e) In the view options for Explorer, unchecked hide system files and hidden folders
f) Did a search for nv*.dll and "Nvidia display" in the 'search for text in files' inside of C:\Windows
g) Deleted any additional files I saw
h) Popped in the OEM driver disk from nVidia video card (did not install anything here)
f) Rebooted machine
g) When it found my video card, pointed it to the drivers on the CD. Selected the correct video driver
h) Rebooted
Presto. Been playing AH for a few hours with no spinning clipboard or lockups. Getting a sold 60fps in all maps and modes. Gonna try 512 textures then 1024. Hopefully all will be good!

This weekend, I reloaded FS2004 with all my terrain addons, airplanes, etc. FS IMHO is the most resource intensive game I have ever run across (and I understand X is even worse!). To my surprise, I am able to run 2004 maxed out. I get FRs dropping in the low 30's (flying low over NYC in rain at dusk; worst conditions I could come up with). I have NEVER had a machine that could run any of the MSFS with full sliders before. It looks beautiful. I can even hover the R22 which I've never been able to do before.
