Title: the grill is dead, long live the grill.
Post by: storch on March 25, 2007, 02:20:53 PM
my grill died and I no longer want to repair it.  I'm considering building my own but will also consider looking at manufactured options  we grill often and year 'round.  we grill all types of red and white meats and also prepare the fixings on the grill, typically we grill with 4-6 couples in attendance especially during the summer months.  is anyone here well pleased with their home depot or other similar type store grills?

Weber kettle, for 80 bucks it'll go 10 years.    Has all you need in airflow control.
Gas grills just dont give the flavor as a good smoker, IMHO.

This gentleman is in Houston; I know him personally.

Builds a very fine grill or smoker or grill/smoker. He has standard models but he will happily build you a custom setup.

Very reasonable, very well done and he will either deliver or arrange delivery.

Ask for Jose; he built his first grill as a high school project. Went on to become a licensed welder and built several businesses. A very nice guy and will add any custom touches you may dream up.

Grill?  What's a grill?  Is there any truth to various allegations that blackened meat can cause cancer?

I love barbecue, but have to admit I'm a little scared of eating much of it.

According to a TV doctor a few years ago, anything blackened is a carcinogen and should be avoided like cigarettes.  What do TV doctors know?  GRILL ON!

dudes I'm 51 and long ago came to the realization that no one gets outta here alive.  besides that grill satisfies some primal urges in all of us meat eaters.  I have an apple tree that actually bears apples but I don't keep it for the apples but for the wood.  sometimes we grill with apple other times with oak then another time with orange or citrus woods.  it's a mighty wonderful thing, grilling is.  health risks be damned.

After years of consideration I have come to the conclusion that if you study anything long enough. A determination will be reached that it can cause cancer

One of the advantages of life in south Texas....mesquite :)

mesquite is pretty expensive here as is hickory but orange is abundant and free.  it's a very hard wood.  makes great slingshots too.

I have access to citrus and mesquite for free (just go out back and do some trimming).

I use mesquite exclusively. I hear you about orange, but nothing beats well-cured mesquite heartwood.

ya mesquite is the real deal but far too pricey for me.  they get about two bucks or so a pound for it.   it sure does burn hot, slow and clean though.

The next time I buy a grill..which will be this Spring..I will make sure I also buy 2 sets of extra burners if they are cheap enough. This last grill's burners ended up costing as much as I paid for the complete grill. Plus they were hard to find.

I just got off of the phone with Lillian at pitts by JJ.  the price for a 20x30 grill is $650.  while the grill is without a doubt worth it, but basically I'm a cheapskate so I'll be turning my attention to either fabricating one in my shop myself or going to the home depot/lowe's/walmart for a massed produced product.  the last one is about twenty years old and I've rebuilt it twice but the steel has gotten thin from rust.

Thanks for the imput.  If I build me one I'll post photos if I can figure out how to work photo hanger.

Whats a "burner"?

Never heard of a Burner on a BBQ grill before.

Or are you talking about one of those outside stoves? ;)

Real grills dont have burners :p

Well my bbq grill is an LP jobbie. It has gas burners inside. As you referring to the things in someone's yard made of brick or something? Something you put charcoal or wood in?

A BBQ Grill is something you put wood or charcoal in for grilling.

Anything outside with gas burners isnt a BBq grill. It is an outside stove ;)

I've seen outside stoves smade out of brick too

culero,

I live in DFW but could drive about anywhere out in the country in Texas and ask to take some mesquite. And you know how folks are about land in Texas :)
