You have been told the Earth is going to explode. A ship has been prepared to send you to an earth-like world, one that has no advanced life-forms such as humans. You may take 20 people with you. No more. Who do you take to make sure the human race survives.
Not names of people...just positions such as a doctor.
You may think you would want your family to go..but for each brother, sister, etc, but they will just be taking up valuable space unless they have a skill that would help you.

How many current playboy bunnies are there?
-
20 strippers
-
do i get to be king? it is good to be king.
-
Well, if the goal is to ensure the survival of the human race, genetic diversity is key. I'd take an assortment of exotic flavors and colors. But I guess to be true to the gene pool, there'd have to be some other Y chromosome types to accompany me. But I would have first dibs :D
A couple of doctors, some subsistence farmers, hunter-gatherer types, a naturalist/botanist would all be included.
-
A bartender
5 cute girls
5 really cute girls
2 trashy yet hot girls
A pharmacist
somebody who can fix and build stuff (Macgyver)
a clown
an Ice cream man
a chef(preferably someone who BBQ's)
A master brewer
a farmer

"Doctor, you mentioned the ration of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?" -General Buck Turgidson
"Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature" -Dr Strangelove

As 20 people is hardly enough to make a viable gene pool, you might as well have fun.

Skuzzy is right, even 2000 people not really enough to have a viable gene pool without doing some pretty high end genetic manipulation.
As for the question, start with those people here on earth that make something out of nothing.
Farmers, ranchers, etc absolute # 1 if you want to eat on the new planet.
Fishermen to keep you alive from the sea while farmers are getting started.
Lumberjacks & sawyers if you want to build anything to live in. Boats for fishermen, etc.
Miners/prospectors if you want to build anything other than log huts.
You'll need a potter to be able to fire dishes, pottery, storage jars, etc.
Hunters & trappers to keep your area free of pest & vermin, as well as adding to the food diversity.
To that you can add
Baker to take the farmers flour and make it into bread.
Butcher to take the carcasses and turn it into steaks.
Spinners/weavers if you want clothing after the first year.
You'll need flax, sheep (for wool) Cotton or their equivilents.
And assuming those men & women will do what I think they'll do on those long cold nights your going to need a teacher or 2 to teach the children.
Starting over with a small group would require ever man & woman aboard be a jack of all trades. Able to make the tools to make the tools. And that my friends is incredibly rare in this day and age.

you have been listening to "after the gold rush" and smoking weed again huh?
-
with that kind of gene pool you may as well pick attractive hardy types because it will take a few thousand years for it to all work out anyway and the original genotypes will all be insignificant.
Attractive and hearty to shorten the wait for the inevitable.

Too easy :-)
Another bloke (a SF soldier, either asian or negro) and sixteen female, pregnant (not to either myself or GI Joe),recent college graduates of varying fields of expertise and race.
A midwife!!!, and a belly dancing barmaid who can cook. (both pregnant, neither to either of the men involved in the programme)
The SF guy is obviously a good genetic specimen, is multi-skilled, usefull in the ongoing breeding programme, defence of our settlement and most important of all, will know how to keep his own, and my, arse safe and hidden from eighteen pissed off pregnant women for extended periods of time when the need arose.

Why not? Started out w/just 2

19 super hot bi ladies and me
-
I'd pass as I certainly should not be one of the 21 who survive for mankinds future ..
-
Well science aside, it always ruins fantasy ya know, besides, a bunch of 2 headed freaks may be fun.
My choices would be:
1 My wife- she keeps me stable
2 My bro- he tilts me off center
3 A farmer- Provider of crops and raises livestock
4 A doctor- healer
5 A botanist/pharmacist- medicines from plants
6 A survivalist / hunter- protector, provider
7 A carpenter- Cutting timber transforming to structures
8 A physics guy- basic brainiac
9 An artist- various arts music, storytelling, paint
10 A vet (we'd bring horses and cattle)
11 A metalurgist- Finds and works metals
A plumber- But I am one so thats not an extra body
12 A prositute- Morale officer
13 A chef- He would also have to know how to slaughter
14 A teacher- to educate...would help the carpenter in the summer
15 A religious leader- to hold the unit together
16 A cloning expert- brings with him vast amounts of gene material :P
17 A good judge- hard to find but we'd surely need one sometime
18 A shipwright- We may need boats
19 A meteorologist- (sp) need to know whats coming
20 A brewer- Can make spirits etc for us to party with.

plenty of small bergs in Arkansas and West Virgnia would dispute that :P
-
All of the trades needed....all done by hot barely legal women. The other male would be a best friend or family member because a random unknown male there would eventually be tribal warfare. You know humans cant go long without fighting.
-
First thing I'd do is give up my spot...I'm diabetic, how many resources
would be wasted getting insulin for me. The added downside is that I
could pass it down to any offspring...better someone healthier goes.
Of course we could have one heck of a going away party :D
-
12 of me cloned.
1/2 genetically rendered female.
i'd hit me.
;)

I can do at least half of that. If I can come along with you, can we fill out the rest of the positions with hot chicks?
-
I cannot get past the lack of DNA to make a viable gene pool. It just isn't happening. I keep seeing zombies!
-
There's indoor plumbing at the destination?
-
Seems most here are thinking with their johnson. If the survival of the species is the idea of this venture then here's how I'd do it...
Get 20 of the best in the medical, agriculture and engineering fields, make sure they are all women of breeding age.
Then get a supply of frozen sperm from the best and brightest in the male population.
That would give you the most diverse way of populating a world using a wide variety of the existing gene pool and would almost eleminate the degradiation of that gene pool by interbreeding. You would have to be careful to control the breeding to keep the gene pool viable.
-
You do not want experts in anything (except two doctors). You want people who can learn to do anything and take the Library of Congress with you (leave the legal/lawyer/political crap behind).
Put the two doctors to work on solving the lack of a gene pool to make a viable species. Have everyone else get to work on making babies and learning how to do what is need to be done.
Taking sperm samples with you is a crap shoot. You dunt know what's in that stuff.
-
AGGHHHHH!!!!!MOOK ZOMBIES!!!!
:O
-
You would need some experts. One guy can't train everyone in everything. And as far as there being plumbing in the new world? There is plumbing everywhere. Theres more to it than making sure poop goes down the drain :)
PS Bring a special needs teacher along for Skuzzy's Roont off-spring :P

All you need is 2. Don't you read the bible? ;)
-
I would make sure no liberals were on board. :)
-
The deleterious effects of inbreeding could be circumvented by cloning. After 1000 generations of cloning, perhaps there would be enough mutations in each persons DNA to add enough genetic diversity.
Edit: Saw where someone said to take sperm samples. Great idea!

Dumb question, babies haven't had their brains rattled and destroyed yet by pony tail wearing school teachers who haven't had to deal with the real world. Babies are born smarter than that, the damage to their cognitive skills is done later.
-
Dumb question.

They would be reduced to a fine red paste, and used as marmalade for our morning toast.

Here's 2 who won't be coming along...

No one....,
I'd blow up the ship and save the new planet the pestilence that is the Human race in hopes that a truly intelligent life form could possibly come into being.
LOLHROTFF :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl
Actually edit that, I would pack the ship with strippers, have my way till it fell off then blow the ship up hahahaha
-
I'm afraid I can't let you do that Mars...it would interfere with the mission.
(stares with one red eye)
-
Moot Point.
Not enough genetic diversity in 20 individuals to keep the human race going.
Within a few generations, it will look like a swap meet in the parking lot of a Wal Mart in West Virginia or Arkansas..... or a Carlos Mencia convention.
"Duh-duh-duhhhhh!!!"
