Now I am at a total loss here. I reformatted my computer and loaded the 10.80 pixelview drivers for my GeForce2 MX. I flew for about an hour with no problems. I decided to try the 12.90 pixelview drivers and right back to the lockups. I have tried reverting back to the 10.80 but now I lock up within 5 mins of entering the room. I went in and set the Vid card to standard vga and reloaded that way and still no luck. I am ready to start shooting this puter and anybody around  Anybody got any tips??
1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon
KT3ABX AZZA MB with KT133A chipset
64MB PixelView Geforce 2 MX
Creative SB PCI512
512 MB Micron PC133 C=3 RAM
Windows 98SE
DX8a
would appreaciate any help I cannot play the game otherwise
Let me add my lockups are what I always gotten screen freezes arbitraily. And speakers emit a constant Beep Tone. Then I have to push the reset button. Also I have tried the Det's also and to no avail 12.41's 21.81's, and 21.83's

Well I think I may have it figured out. I want to share what I did in case anybody else has the same problem. First off I switched the sound settings for the PCI512 over to "Game Compatible Device" and there was another setting for simutaneous Wavs. The default was 4 I bumped it up to 20 or something like that. And flew for quite some time no problems. I will change settings back 1 at a time and see which was causing the problems and report back to you. That way it can be in the file of "What's up here" :)

I've been having a problem like that. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same because it doesn't happen all the time. I will enter the arena and it will lock up no more than 2 min after entering. Wierd thing is that it doen't happen all the time but when it does I might not be able to enter the arena for hours. I'm thinking I have a connection problem because it will let me enter after a while. Would like to see what you come up with for what the problem was.

Try using the nvidia referense drivers, instead of the manuf drivers, and also make sure sb16 emulation is all alone on irq 5.
You can reserve it for that irq in ur bios
Hope it helps
-
Ok black falcon I should said this I was using the reference drivers and no good. Still was having the same problem. Thats why I went to the pixel view ones trying to find the problem. I was thinking Vid Card all the way but now I know the problem is the soundcard. I am having trouble logging onto AH today I keep getting a Host timed out error. But this is the first time I've ever had this problem.

Think you are right about the sound .
Have you set the hardware settings for directx sound etc back to the lower or lowest setting ? I have helped alot .
-
Well now I haven't got a clue where the problem lies  It did ok for a little bit but then right back to the lockups. All sound acceleration set to 0. I even flashed the BIOS with the new fix and nothing. Put the new 4in1 drivers on nadda. Even pulled the Ceforce 2 out and installed a DV V770 TNT2 Ultra 32MB a friend gave me once. My FR jumped up to almost double the GForce2 card I thought maybe I found it. But nope, lockup after 5 mins. I ran SiSoft Sandra which was telling me all kinds of problems with the GeForce 2 which was why I installed the TNT2. The TNT2 came in clean no warnings at all. There were some other things on there tho, telling me my AGP bus speed was too fast, my PCI bus speed was too fast. And it even told me my NIC card had too high a latency, which it says would hog the PCI bus and might cause data transfer from say the soundcard to not get transferred right and cause sound drop out or lockup. But I find that hard to beleive that a NIC card would cause problems like that. For what its worth mi NIC is a Realtek RTL8139 anybody?? I'm at wits end here

Not sure if your problem is the same mine was or not.
I would enter into the game start to fly and get mini freezes lasting 1 to 2 seconds until a hard lockup would happen. In some cases my speakers would start screaching at me.
I pulled out my SB live. Installed a new SB 5.1 digital and the problem went away. I came across a SB Audigy and installed it without a problem too.
Installed the SB live I had and WHAM problem was back. Uninstalled it and smiled as it hit the bottom of the trash can.
I came to the conclusion that in my case the SB live was bad. Hope this helps.

I'm noticing that many of the users who complain lockups are the ones that got fooled by WW2OL into buying 512MB+ memory.
Windows98 can't handle that much, which might be the root of your problem. Interesting test would be to rip off that 256Mb dimm from the board and see if the lockups continue.
If I were you, I'd upgrade OS to XP or w2k. Preferably later.
-
Hmm interesting thought. I didn't realize 98 couldn't handle the 512MB. I had the same problem with the Windows ME version. Is that the same as Win 98 for the mem? Well thats something I could do. Another I was gonna try was to pull my SB out and see if I can get the OB Audio to work. When I first got this computer I couldn't get the audio to work so I bought the SB PCI 512 but I then realized I installed the wrong 4n1 drivers so I reformatted and started over. But I never tried the OB SC. I think thats what I'll try tonight. I don't want to stay with that sound setup, but it might tell me if that SC is the problem at no extra cost. TY. I do plan to update to XP soon, but would prefer to wait till MS works out some bugs for it first. Maybe sooner than I expect. Can somebody explain to me why the Diamond Viper V770 Ultra gives me much better performance than the Geforce 2??? They look the same to me but FR is almost double the Geforce 2.

P.S. I appreaciate the help guys.

try going back to an older version of the nVidia Detonators ... new does not necessarily mean better in this case, new versions are more geared to newer cards i suppose (see tweakersasylum.com).
i went back to 7.52 and have no problems at the moment. also used to have lockups with newer nVidia drivers ...
btw ; is this problem on-line or off-line ?
just noticed i also seem to have a Pixelview - GeForce2 MX from Prolink (www.prolink.com.tw)

Could this be a heat-related issue? Being able to fly for a while OK and then locking up strikes me as probably more heat-related than driver related. A driver-problem would be evident right away, not after some time of flying?
Also, I am a TNT 32Mb user who tried upgrading to a Visiontek Geforce2 MX 32MB, and my FR dropped. Returned the GEforce and went back to the TNT. Experiences like that must be how "GeFarce" got started...

AS for the mem limitations; win98se(not win98) and me can support up to 512mb of ram; win 2000 and xp can support over that.
If you migrate to xp may i suggest you setup a dualboot machine. Oh and ms already working on sp1 for xp
When using the sb card it's really important to make sure IRQ5 is all alone w/sb16 emulation using it. Or else you'll get all kinds of random problems.

Well with the Geforce 2 I used the drivers that came with the card and the same problems. I used the 12.41 reference drivers with the TNT2 had the same problem. I took out the SB PCI512 and had a squeak of a time getting the VIA AC 97 OB audio working but its working right now. I don't like the idea of using the OB audio but I flew around the room for 1 1/2 hours today with no lockups. Right now it looks like the problem was the PCI 512. But I hate to say "HEY I FOUND THE PROBLEM!" again like I did the last time. If that is the case then I'll be lookin for a new SC to pop in here. I do think I have finally exited the tunnel on this endless quest to fix this POS computer :) ty for all the help I hope this is "Really" the fix.

I had a crapload of problems as well, i now use the Gforce2 MX400 64meg card, had a TNT2 previous and a TNT previous to that.
When uninstalling the Detonator drivers, not everything is uninstalled. After a lot of reading and research i found a program called Detonator Destroyer. I hunts all reference to the Detonator drivers and anything that the install would have left in the registry.
Gforce2 runs smooth without problems, although i had to go to the 7.78 Detonator drivers because i had problems running wwiionline. No probs with AH.
Ill post link to the Detonator Destroyer program when i get home from work.
Dog out.....

Quote from the HiTech Website FAQ....
"I have a GeForce video card and my computer locks up after playing AH for a short time OR My computer intermittently locks up when playing AH and I have a motherboard using an AMD or VIA chipset.
Reply:
If you have an Athlon processor this problem is due to a flaw in AMD's 750 "Irongate" North Bridge chipset. There is currently no fix available, but there is a workaround. First of all, download the newest AGP and IRQ routing drivers from your motherboard supplier. Next, make sure you select AGP 1x as your AGP bus speed.
This problem also occurs in systems using VIA Apollo MVP3 chipsets. The solution in this case is to download the newest AGP driver and IRQ routing drivers from www.viatech.com. (http://www.viatech.com.) In addition, you should disable any settings in your bios referring to AGP "Turbo Mode" or VGA Pallet Snooping. Known MB's with this issue include the ASUS K7 and a number of EPOX MBs.
If the above steps do not correct your problem, try searching for a newer bios version for your motherboard."

Hope this helps.

I am having similar but slightly different problems.... {Posted previously in "Technical Support}. Anyway, I can [ALT TAB] out, but AH crashes on reentry... Looks like I need to try the "pull the NEW SBLive" card - reinstall old one. Wait and see... Might we have discovered a serious issue with Creative & HiTech compatabilities?

I have a sys setup like you mention w/no probs at all. Biggest thing is on the sb live dont install dos drivers and make sure sb16 emulation is on irq 5, you can do that thru your bios by reserving it.

In response to the FAQ quote above: I wrote that and HTC added it to their FAQ about a year and a half ago. The 750 chipset is no longer in use, and hasn't been since the Tbird Athlons. The last board to use them usually had a k7m in their model number.
Updating the via drivers may help, but I really think there is an IRQ or soundblaster driver issue causing the problem. Creative really has a fairly poor record with their drivers and sharing interupts with anything else.
-
I agree considering that the "Latest Drivers" for the PCI 512 I got are dated Nov. 1999 I beleive. That is atrocious IMO. The computer world is leaps and bounds ahead of what it was in 99.

I am having lock up problems too. I see that my SB16 in in IRQ 7. Could anyone tell me how to put in IRQ 5? Thanks. tprest@ev1.net
-
YO pug
You have to do this in your bios.
When you bootup press the key to get in your bios(usually delete key or f1), go to pci/pnp configuration, then resources controlled by- change this to manual, then IRQ resources and reserve IRQ5 for isa or legacy device...... Thats it :D
If this doesnt help tell us what kinda machine you have and any other pertenant info.
Hope it helps
-
W98 can handle 512mb of ram, just any higher you need to do an INI fix.
I'd recommend you leave the case open and see what happens..

Err Falcon,
I have done what you said I set the IRQ5 to Legacy Device when I reinstall the Soundcard I still have the TNT2 card on IRQ5 and can't even see the SB16 emulation anywhere on the IRQ list but in Properties for the SB16 it says IRQ7?? Do I need to remove the TNT2 Card to get it to change??

You should use the gf2 in ur agp slot, skip a slot put in your sb card , skip 2 slots and put in your modem or nic. Assign IRQ 5 to legacy or reserved. Make sure recourses are controlled by manual not auto. This should give you seperate IRQ's for devices and irq5 should be for sb16 emulation under device manager/computer/properties.
Also in your bios enable agp4x and fast writes enabled.
And use 21.85 nvidia drvrs and dx8.1 You can get them here if you need them.
Give this a try,, Hope it helps

To BlackFalcon4,
Thanks bud, I reset my SB16 from IRQ7 to IRQ5 and my lockups went away. I've had no lockups for 2 days now - before I was having them every time I played. I had tried everything, or so I thought.
Thanks again,

I also have a bad lockup problem. You've given me lots to look at in the previous posts mainly with IRQs, I've got:
ACPI IRQ holder for pci irq steering
Creative SB Live! series
VIA Tech 3083 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller [listed twice]
all under IRQ 5, YIKES!!!
Also, someone told me to disable SB16 emulation, I guess they were off base.
My freezes never happen offline, and i practiced alot there, but happen many times a day online, with no pattern to them. My frame rate takes a nose dive and the computer locks up requiring a hard reset/scan routine.

If you have an athlon 1.4gig in your system, I'd strongly reckommend getting a faster display card.
When you buy a geforce3 ti200 f.e. you'll forget all the nonsense about different detonators etc. because your system will simply run AH - FAST.
If your lockups only happen online I would suggest the problem lies on the NIC. You aren't using one of those horrid usb nics are you???
Because if your networking and live! share the irq - boy you're in trouble. Generally speaking the live! is a pain in the bellybutton for VIA chipset owners - I've learned that the hard way. I switched to onboard ac97 sound for now and I prefer lower sound quality instead of lockups. The soundcard is not the weakest link anyway if you think the typical multimedia sound system. If you have desktop speakers, they will distort your sound by hundred times more than your soundcard ever will.
-
Yo Fuze
Built multiple systems using KT7A board(nice board)
Follow what i said in previous posts for where and what to do on placing cards and assigning irq's.
Now go here web page (http://www.biosmods.com/) and get a tricked bios update.
It'll alow you to shut off acpi and free up an irq, plus you can get a different epa logo(some really cool ones)
Also use latest via 4in1's and nvidia drivers. And when you install agp driver from the 4in1's use turbo mode.
Hope it helps :)

With regard to your lockups, i was locking up for a year and found the problem was in the sound settings. I put up a detailed post on 11/08 with the solution. Check it out and maybe it will work for you also.
It apparently has worked for others.
Good luck, that freezing up gets old real fast and ruins the game.
