Title: video upgrade
Post by: strube on January 12, 2001, 01:16:00 PM
I have a compaq pc with a 600 AMD. The video card is a Diamond Stealth III S540. I believe it is a PCI card also. Any suggestions? Also I am thinking of upgrading the CPU to an 850 AMD. Am just trying to get better frame rates.

What kind of framerates you getting now? I run the same vid card but o a pII 350 and get about 45fps in normal flight on average.
Switching to an Intel processormight give you a good boost if your AMD chip is of the K6-2 variety.

This is a K7 processor. The video card has 16mb of memory. I get about 30 fps in 1028 res. and about 50 in 800 res. I would rather fly in 1028 res. but the frame rates slow down so much when in smoke or clouds that it is almost unplayable. Would like to even get up to 1200 res. if I could.

I think your best upgrade will be a GeForce 2 MX.  Your processor should do if it is an Athlon or Duron.

You can get the MX's for under $100 US.  Maybe a couple bucks more for a PCI version if you have no AGP slot.
