Well, sorry it has been so long for pics on the last update, but we were in the process of finishing up new hangars and workshops, as well as the process of a eight month move and reorganisation.
Here is a photo of one of the workshop areas:

Here is a photo of the nose bowl as I am fitting and attaching the new / old cheek pieces:

Here is a photo of nearly finished cowl flaps being test fit. Notice they still need their shims.

I will post a bit more later.

No kidding.....I'm retireing from the Coast Guard here shortly and looking for something to do. You guys need any electronic techs that are good with tools? That is the kind of job I could really get into for life after the military. I need to find a "fun" job now.
-
Mmmmm. Beautiful.
BTW, Bodhi, was it you I was talking to a while back about finding pics to figure out how the frell to run the exhaust headers on my 1A uber-detailed 1/48 kit? I'm working on the engine now (GOD that wiring is a pain) and would like to be able to do the firewall mount with this assembly all at once.
-
I can send you pics out of the IPB if you like. Maybe even dig through the production fiche to see if I have any better shots... doubtful as it takes a lot of time.
The IPB is the easiest way to do it. PM me a snail mail addy and I can send some out to yas.

Yes it is its an R2800-CB3
Bodhi,
If you don't mind me asking why the CB3? I am not sure what your level of involvement in this project is but how much more difficult would it be to restore with a R2800-18/46?
After reading Graham Whites book I was surprised to hear how upset he was to see the use of the CB3 in warbird restorations. That is the root of my question anyway.
Also do you know what prop/blade type will be used (that question is for me)?
-
F4u, it was an owner request. The CB-3 is a more reliable and available engine. Contrary to what Mr. White said regarding the availabilty of the -18W, it is just not so. With the demise of engine rebuilders like Rudy Blakey and the wholesale scrapping of 95% of his stock, it is getting harder and harder to find these engines. Add to that the problems with getting someone to rebuild intercoolers and we have come in to a problem with the originality. Sure it can be done, but the cost generally is 10X as much.
The plan for this F4u is for it to be flown as much as possible. So, for the time being it will have a CB-3. BUT, an 18W has been aquired for installation at a later date. At that point it will purely be a QEC change to be original.
-
Thanks for the answer Bodhi,
I wasn't sure if it was the avaiablity of the engine the servicing of the two stage superchargers etc.
BTW, any word on the prop blade type?
-
6541A's with the standard 24E60 hub.
saving the 6823's for the -18W.
-
Always a warm feeling to see one being restored, thx.:aok
-
Cool.....
That is just outstanding:aok

Here are some shots of the aircraft itself.
It has just come out of the Fuselage / Center Section Fixture and is awaiting final fit out

Well apparently picture hangar is suspended now so I can not post anymore restoration photos.
Anyone know of any better places to post photos for free that allow you to keep a privat stash not open to the world unless you give out a linky?
