Title: Opinion on song
Post by: cav58d on March 29, 2007, 06:50:23 PM
My former rugby team at Southern Connecticut State University is facing losing it's school funding for a song which is commonly sung at "drink up's" after the games.....

The song is "On top of the school house, all covered in blood, I shot my poor teacher, with a 22 shot gun, I went to her funeral, and pee'd on her grave, people threw roses, and I threw gernades, I went to her coffin, and she wasn't quit dead, so I pulled out my bazooka, and blew off her  head, now shes gone to heaven, seven stories high, real men play rugby, so "F"-off and die".

Now sure, the song is totally out of taste...But then again, most of the songs we sing are leud and nasty...(by the way, when I was playing, this song wasn't sung).....Anyways, admitting it's out of taste, and after writting a formal letter of apology to the University, and promising to never sing the song again, the schools administrators are still in the process of cutting the teams funds.....

Do you think that is fair?

Unfair

Where was this sung?  It probably put a bad name to the school in the eyes of some people but there will always be dissenters.  I say no harm, no foul.  They are just words after all.

Sung at the Rugby house which is privately owned, and off campus...
After each home game, theres always anywhere from 75-100 non athlete students coming to our drinks ups, and apparantly someone was offended and went to the Dean.

Rediculous

Its like ittalians being upset over the words to "on top of spagetti"
Or animal lovers getting upset with the "Yellow bird" cadence chant
Its a stupid goofball parady song.
Anyone but the most feeble minded can see that.

Reeks of polical correctness which I have grown increasingly intolerent of to the point where I would find the people most bothered by it. and sing it over and over again untill they become numb to it

If it's a privately owned place you should be aloud to do as you wish.  This PC stuff is getting way out of hand.

If people are offended by it, then they need not go there.

It's funny...Whoever reported us, has absolutely no problem about songs being sung that reference enough drinking to kill a small african nation, and having sex with your best friends sister, mother and grandmother....lmao...

The PC BS is out of control though...Whats worse is, even when someone is in the wrong, and does apologize, that isn't enough these days...."No....I wont accept your apology...I want you fired!  I want to take you to court!"  out of control.

What's not fair is for the rest of the school to have to endure ill behaved classmates.

Learn to play nice.  Other folks really appreciate it, and things work out much more smoothly and happily.

I have people tell me at work that I should be more politically correct and compassionate to others feelings and mind my own business. I tell them that when they start speaking low enough that I dont hear their conversations then I wont comment on them. :rofl

Yea, those poor students....All 12,000 of them...It's terrible they have to endure against 30 or so ill behaved rugby players practicing a tradition as old as the game, on their private property....damn us....damn us to hell.

You got a right to sing leud, nasty, mindless, tasteless, spoiled, and asinine drivel.

The college board has the right to cut your funding if they so desire.

Both groups are exercising their rights.   So what's the problem?

Uhhm, I think the game of rugby pre-dates the introduction of the bazooka, so I'm guessing this particular song wasn't that popular amongst the rugby playing masses back in the late 19th century.

I think it's great that rugby is played in American colleges - it's an amazing game. But do yourself a favor and don't try to ape the arrogant upper-class public-schoolboy cr@p so prevalent amongst UK rugby (union) players. Its not a good look.

Most of us grew up playing football, and didn't start rugby until freshmen year in college, however, I think we'd give some of you brits a good run for your money....

Theres actually six guys on the team (when I played) that came from the UK, New Zealand and Australia...Definately made us better players to be around guys who have played rugby as kids, like we play AYSO or Little League here in the states...

Either way, it's the best sport i've ever played, and the most memorable times from college come from being on and off the field with the team.

There is certainly BS in this thread, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the PC kind.
