Well, I graduated my first school here on base. On to "A" school. Its in San Diego. I would like to know the positives, negatives, and any tips you all have on the area. being a Yank from New York I have no idea what Cali is like besides bad air, gay people, and celebrity politicians. Id like any information you all have that isnt a stereotype like those.

I went to A school in san diego. you don't have bad air, or didn't way back in 1975. san diego is a great town and it's miles from LA in every respect.

From New York to San Diego?
Hmm, you are going from Bad air to Good Air, Snow to Sun, Parkas to Bikinis, $5.00 glass of orange juice to Year Round Great Food and Drink.
Oh, and the Alternate Lifestyle and Celebs share condos between east and west coast, it's the same people on the fringes, out here though we just ignore them :)

Brush up on your espanol, or just remember "donde estal las putas y cerveza?"
Stay far away from National City, unless you're looking for drugs / hookers.. pure ghetto. I wouldn't go to TJ alone and or brag about being in the US military while there. I'd also stay on revolution blvd where the local 18+ HS / college chicks get way too drunk. The Mexican police will rip you off, kick your as* and toss you in jail for looking at them funny.
There are always carpools, buses / trains that head to Hollywood / Sunset Blvd every weekend. Being from NY you might like 7969 Santa Monica Blvd and the Key Club on Sunset... the underbelly of LA where the freaks go.
Last... If you do make it to LA you MUST go to "King Taco" in East LA (3rd St & Ford off the 110fwy) and get an all meat burrito with the green and RED sauce.. it'll be an eye watering experience but the best burrito ever.

San Diego is nice. Been out there a few times over the last couple of years and had a good time when I went. The "Old Town" area up on the hill is nice and there are some pretty good resturants up there. The Baseball Stadium is pretty close to the base and since the season will be starting before too long you can always go catch a game. MWR always has a bunch of tickets cheap. Can't remember the beach that's near there but there is an amusment park there with some decent roller coasters and stuff, plus the eye candy walking around on the beach and boardwalk is first rate. Not sure if the Hooters in downtown SD still has the waitresess on roller skates or not but last time I was there OMG. 6ft blondes on skates in the bar was real cool:D
Anyway there is plenty to do, so enjoy it.

I grew up in San Diego.
Rule 1. Don't leave a remotely attractive vehicle unattended south of highway 8.
Rule 2. Don't buy a fast motorcycle. You'll tip it over and sell it for half it's purchase price 6 months later.
Rule 3. Mission beach (the place Hornet is thinking of) is a great hangout day or night (lots of little restaurants and bars a bit away from the beach as well) but it's also a good place to get shot. If you go there, NEVER EVER drink very much because you need to notice when things are going weird so you can get out. Don't stick around to watch because every once in a while, gang wars break out there and sometimes you don't notice what's about to go down until you're in the middle of it. The one and only drive by shooting I've ever witnessed happened there. The shooter didn't hit anyone and only made one pass so most people were like LOL, but still the SDPD has to go in every year or two and clean it up when it gets too bad.
Go to the zoo and/or sea world. I think they still have military discounts. Definately a good place to take a date.
If you like scenic driving, head on up to Julian and over to Palomar observatory. If you can find Dudley's bakery, you've found one of Southern California's best kept secrets.
La Jolla is also a nice beach to hang out on. More huge mexican families taking up all the picnic areas on the grass there, but less gangs and just as many hot chicks.
Blacks Beach is still a nudie beach (IIRC) but it's not terribly interesting unless you just want to walk around naked. The strand off of Coronado also used to have a nekkid beach area but I think they shut that one down... Damn shame, they weren't causing any problems but the idiot puritans just gotta ruin every innocent thing that doesn't conform to their twisted worldview...
Ocean Beach is allegedly worth the trip to hang out on the boardwalk. It's a bit away from the base so there are fewer negative stereotypes of military guys up there.
Country bars in San Diego are a great way to find loose women looking for a man in uniform to use to cheat on their husbands. Many of those women are married to other military members. Occasionally you'll find one who isn't married and who just wants to find some young stud with a job to get them pregnant. Many of these women are pratically begging to get used, because they keep going back as if THIS time the guy will call her the next day. Avoid unless you really want kids or want to marry a country bar hottie who will then cheat on you in country bars the first time you deploy.
If you're interested in history, visit some of the old missions and Point Loma. Old Town is also interesting.
If you're interested in sea critters, go to scripps institute aquarium. If it's the right season, go on a whale watching or deep sea fishing trip (check with the base MWR or tours and travel folks for discount trips).
If you have money to burn, a trip to Catalina Island can be a fun way to spend a weekend. $$$$.
The gaslamp district downtown is a cool place to hang out. Horton plaza is right there, tons of restaurants, theaters, bars, etc. Something for just about everyone. They also have the convention center right there and there are concerts and stuff in an outdoor pavillion right next to the water.
If you want to see how rich people live, walk around La Jolla shopping and business district, starting from the La Jolla Cove parking area. Interesting. there is a great Thai restaurant in there somewhere near the antique stores, but of course it is expensive.
If you're into sailing or boats, I think the navy has a marina where you can rent boats. If not, some of the hotels rent sailboats that you can sail around mission bay. Jetskis are very popular, but check up on the local licensing regulations and rules or you could get a hefty fine for busting some stupid rule you didn't even know existed.

More stuff to avoid...
National City, El Cajon, etc... You can do better. Don't hang out with trailer trash unless you really want to be one of them for life. Aim high, hang out at some nicer places. You'll see your friends come back shxtfaced and bragging about how they had such a great rowdy time, but all they did was hang out with a bunch of drunks and talk loudly.
Go to TJ with a group of people at least once, but dress up a bit to avoid attracting negative attention and go early in the day to get a feel for the place before it gets dark. TJ can be a lot of fun but you really have to be smart about it. Park well north and take the bus or trolley, maybe take a cab. Don't bother driving across the border unless you plan on driving THROUGH TJ deeper into Mexico. Most of Mexico is IMHO more interesting than TJ. Only 2-3 hours drive into Mexico can get you to some much nicer places that actually invite tourism rather than viewing tourists as targets to rip off. That can be a great way to spend a 3 or 4 day weekend if you get lucky enough to have one while you're there and you get permission to go. Maybe MWR will have a trip... Spring break in Mexico can be a BLAST, but of course if you drink too much you WILL end up a crime victim or worse.

SD is possibly the nicest big city in the Country if not the World. The weather is perfect, even more perfect than the rest of California. I've eaten the food at the NTC and it was even pretty good.
And yes the Air Museum in Balboa Park is very nice.
Also some good eats down on the Embarcadero.

If you're over 21, make sure to hit the Casbah on Laural and Kettnor in downtown.

Ill be out in San Diego come August. Transferring to a boat out there...coming off shore duty in Charleston, SC. Looking foward to getting out there...my first time that side of the Mississippi.
how long you gonna be out there bluej?

Atleast a few months. Probally longer because its likely that will be my first real duty station.
