Title: Skuzzy Video Card and sound card on Same IRQ??
Post by: Balsy on March 30, 2007, 06:28:41 AM
Fathers rig is erroring out in AH, and actually has rebooted right out of the game.  Its my power supply from my puter which I know is solid.

Checked the IRQ's and video and sound card are on IRQ 16.  Could this be it?

6600 Intel
2 gigs Corsair
P5n-sli
audigy zs platinum
bfg 7950

How do I change the IRQ's.. it looks like 15 is open, can I use that?

Title: Skuzzy Video Card and sound card on Same IRQ??
Post by: Skuzzy on March 30, 2007, 09:07:37 AM
Never used an NVidia based motherboard for an Intel CPU.  But the shared IRQ could be problematic.

Also note, I have heard using the IDE driver NVidia supplies can be a problem.  I cannot confirm this though.

I would suspect the Creative card as well.  I have heard NVidia chipsets do not care for them.  Again, I cannot confirm this.

For some reason, it appears Windows has loaded a bunch of standard device drivers.  Are you sure the motherboard drivers were installed?

most motherboards have one slot that does not share its irq.
I just moved my audigy2 over one slot to give it an irq of its own

is the only way to change an IRQ by physically moving a card???

Typically, yes.  You need to refer to the motherboard manual.  If the slot you put the Creative card in is physically sharing the IRQ with the AGP/PCI-E slot, then you have no choice but to move the Creative card to another slot.

If the slots are not physically sharing the IRQ, then you should be able to go into the BIOS ROM and set the IRQ's manually for the PCI slots (at least you can on Intel based motherboards).

You would need to remove the drivers for both the video card and sound card before doing either.

Played for near 2 hours, no problems.  Then I tried vox and it locked up, started beeping through the speaker etc..

Think its the sound card, Im gunna have him pull it and use the Onboard Ac97,  and see if that clears up his issues.

Downloaded the users manual.

BOTH PCI slots are shared, PCI 1 is shared with onboard LAN, Onboard Audio, Onboard IDE controller, and Sata 0

PCI 2 is shared with USB 1.0 only.. might be the better bet, or just not use the darn Audigy ZS at all?

Comments welcome.

Creative does not like to share interrupts, but if you are not using the USB 1.0 interface, then it should be fine.  But again, I am not sure if there is not a conflict within the NVidia chipset itself.

It would be a shame if you could not use the Creative card.  It is a much better option than any onboard sound chip is.

Creative card , grrrrr .

I just got my new rig Thusday and nothing but problems with the sound card and mic plug .

I finally replaced the SB card with my "old" Turtle Beach card , now I can whisper louder making a test recording then  I could talking loud with the SB card .

If I "ate" the mic on the SB card it was ok , but with it even 1/2 in away , nope it started getting "very soft" .

Now I see why so many AH players are so soft spoken

I just wrote my tech support were I bougtht the rig that that card was never going back in again  .

Am wondering if that's problem with just this card or a problem with SB cards ?

I have never had a problem with mic volume on any Creative card.  Quite the opposite.  I usually have to turn down the gain to prevent over saturation.

But I have not gotten an X-Fi yet.  My Audigy 2 ZS Platinum works very well.

Thanks for the reply Skuzzy .

Then I will be thinking that it's just this card then . I sent my tech guy a email saying that it needed replaceing .

BTW I have my new PC set to your IE settings . After a day no cookies from unwanted sites :) yaaaaa

Thanks again for the heads up .

I just installed this card a few weeks ago and am very happy with it's performance. Did you boost the mic level in the advanced portion of the sound control panel?

This card will relieve the CPU strain most audio cards create. It's got something like 51 million transistors onboard. It's a bit pricy at $130-140 but well worth it IMO.

Yes Flatbar I did .

In the last two days I have done everything I could think of also to fix the problem . I been one step ahead of my tech support also .

I really do believe it's the hardware on the card that's defective on this .

Glad you wrote though , now I know at least one person is having good luck with his card . I know they will send me another to replace this one .

Lets not hope it's a mb to SB problem :( I bet not as they build alot of Asus I bet .

I have removed it , reinstalled drivers , updated drivers , have the Mic maxed in both places , tested in Device Manager , tested with sound recorder and it's just soooooo sooo soft .

I just tried setting to 96KHz and 24-bit and that didn't do nothing to help it also .

Gonna send this link to my tech guy too :)

Sorry for the hijack Balsy :(

On mine they put the sound card in the slot the farthest from the video card , with one slot between it and the modem .

Hope that helps you .

I was getting skratching sounding nosies on my "old pc" when I used vox untill I followed Skuzzys advice and moved mine sound card to a slot farthest from video card . Other than that PC worked ok on that MB with the sound card right up next to the video card .
