To answer your question; sensitive enough to care but with a healthy sense of self-depreciation (even the Bible called for modesty) not to act too pious.

Calling a chololate Jesus 'distasteful' (no pun intended) would be a nice moderate (no pun intended again) repsonse.  But many other things that happen today could (and should in my opinion) be reserved for the title of 'worst assault'.
