I gots me a quarstion... how the heck are they disapating the heat on these new laptops? I've got an old IMB thinkpad T20 that I still use eveyday but unless you place it on something like a blanket no way no how could you set it on bare skin without getting a 3rd degree burn. My new laptop (http://pencomputing.com/frames/panasonic_cf29.html) is a Panasonic CF-29 with 512/60 and not to mention the frikin 8 hours of battery life I get but I can also rest it on my lap without protection. Mind you this is not a gaming machine but still how the heck they keep this thing so cool?

Im guessing it has some larger cooling ribs inside that move the little heat those innards produce evenly to the case. Either that or Chuck Norris is living in it and fighting the heat.

My dual core laptop with 2 harddrives doesnt get to hot to have on my lap either, but then it has fans.

My lappy is usually cool, except when I'm editing films or making graphics for sites, something I do every day. This gives me the extra I need to keep my leg hairs on my legs.

If I had any money I'd get one for my computer.  It's fine for normal use, but if I play some hardware intensive games, the laptop over heats and starts to stutter.

Depending on the processor in each of you laptops, the heat will vary.  Like my soon to be wife has a Toshiba about 2-3 years old that uses the Intel Pentium 4 HT Prescott processor, which were notorious for generating a lot of heat.  Like if she were to sit in bed and set it on the comforter and block part of the large exhaust fan the computer would shut down due to overheating (which she has done countless times and blamed the laptop).

With your newer laptop you said it has an 8 hour battery which probably uses more Lithium Ion cells in the battery pack than your IBM.  On a good discharge rate these cells can reach 140F.  So most likely more heat.

I have a Thinkpad T60p, and it seems to use heat pipes and fans to direct the heat out a pair of vents on the side.  Considering that it has a speedy dual core processor, I imagine it's quite a bit of heat, but the battery life is very good and it never gets hot on the lap.

The Megahertz race saw companies going for faster and faster machines at the expense of power consumption. The worst of the bunch was the Pentium 4 series. You might remember this as a period of explosive processor speed increases. (let me remember: in 1992, the fastest CPU was 33 MHz; in 1995, 100; in 1999, 450; in 2002, 1.4 Ghz; 2004 3.4 Ghz. Today 3.4 Ghz). You look at those numbers, and you see an arms race in the last few years. At the top speeds, they hit a wall. Even intel saw the wisdom and abandoned the P4 path. So today's laptops are often quieter and less power-consuming than yesterday's. Heck, I have a P4 3.0Ghz laptop on the desk right now, next to my E6600 Core2 Duo (Running at stock 2.4). The laptop is noiser and slower.

The new core 2 duo's use less power than their P4 older siblings.  For 4 years I had a Pentium 4 2.8ghz (no HT) Northwood Core and the heatsink/fan spun at a higher rpm than the stock one that came with my new Core 2 Duo E6400.  It also runs about 5-10C coolor depending on load on the CPU.  

Now thats not to say other components are getting 'cooler.'  Newer hard drives have more platters and are stacked closer together, which generates more heat.  Northbridge chipsets on motherboards also run hotter these days...and the list goes on.
