I'm home with one of my sons, who's sick. He's getting the royal treatment... me bringing him whatever he wants, etc.
So he says he wants to watch "that John Wayne movie." I went through a whole list of John Wayne movies trying to figure out which one he was asking for, without success.
Turns out he was asking for "that Chon Wang" movie ~ Shanghai Noon/Knights.
So anyway ~ what's your favorite John Wayne movie?

sands of iwo jima.

Rio Bravo

The Searchers

The Longest Day

These are all my favorites. I don't have a single favorite John Wayne Movie so I had to go with those that would all be at the top of my list.
The Hellfighters
The Green Berets
In Harms Way
Donovans Reef
The Longest Day
The High and The Mighty
Blood Alley
Flying Leathernecks
Sea Chase
:aok

one of my favorites none the less.

McClintock
Main Cast: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Yvonne De Carlo, Patrick Wayne, Stefanie Powers, Chill Wills, Edgar Buchannan, Struther Martin. Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen. Produced by Michael Wayne.
John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara teemed up again for this romantic comedy, a Westernized Taming of the Shrew. The highlight of the film is the famous mud scene. Over a hundred stunt men were used and they slid down a muddy embankment, fighting and brawling as they slid. Yvonne De Carlo played an attractive widow hired as a cook by the Duke, who played a cattle baron separated from his wife, Maureen O'Hara.

All of them.
My Daughter after not showing any interest at all in John Wayne movies I picked up a copy of "The Cowboys" and watched it with her
Now shes a John Wayne addict
Wayne wasnt a great actor. But he was a great movie star.
With great lines
His charactors personified an "American" is and should be.
Damn shame we dont have anymore like him
-

The Horse Soldiers
The Undefeated

The Searchers
arguably his best performance as an actor
I remember hearing once that "The Searchers" was the only role Wayne ever did "method" acting in where he became the charactor in the movie.
He found it so hard to get out of charactor
He swore he would never do it again
-
The Green Berets
-
The quiet man, I like the short story by maurice walsh far better though.
-
The Quiet Man
-
I wondered if someone else would say The Quiet Man, its my favorite.
I also really like North To Alaska, the Rooster Cogburn roles, They Were Expendable, and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. 3 Godfathers was pretty good as well.
Actually, I could go on and on. The man did very few I didn't like :)

ya I agree but the lady did say favorite. actually I liked even the "B" westerns going back to the late 30's with gabby hayes. when I was child I used to think how do these dudes get in fistfights and no one loses their hats? stuff like that always kept me interested in those hokey movies.
-
Big Jake, The Quiet Man, and The Shootist all tied for first with me.:)

I have many that I really like. If I had to choose just one it would be McClintock. There was a great range of his acting in that one and a fantastic bunch of co actors.
-
The Searchers was his best performance, bar none.
-
The searches was good, but it was dark and not as much fun to watch as his more light hearted movies.
Hatari and They were expendable are my favs.
-
They Were Expendable was a great movie, but Duke was the 2nd lead. Robert Montgomery was the lead and uncredited director after John Ford got sick.
As far as his "fun" movies go, ya can't beat Donovan's Reef.
-
Hellfighters
The Green Berets a close second.
-
searchers and the shootist but....
All of his movies were good to watch.
-
"John Wayne does Chuck Norris in Dallas" has to be the best one.
Oh wait!.... nm:o

""You can call me father, you can call me Jacob, you can call me Jake, you can call me a dirty SOB, but if you ever call me daddy again I'll finish this fight."

Chisum...Big Jake...The Cowboys....McClintock...And tons more

I hesitated a but before picking that one, because it was an ensemble cast, but I think it's the best film he was ever involved in.
I'll throw in a couple of others though:
In Harm's Way
The Sands of Iwo Jima
-
I saw The Cowboys as a little kid, have never liked that actor that shot John Wayne in the back ever since. :furious

Bruce Dern
LOL I felt the same way.
The guy plays a good toughguy/phsyco though.
Tattoo was another one.
thing is the guy is a real wuss in real life
-
Too many good ones, no ONE fav.
I like most of his work, but among the top, and in no particular order:
In Harms Way (has to be in top three)
The Horse Soldiers
The Undefeated
Rio Bravo
El Dorado (didn't see this one listed yet)
Chisum
Big Jake
Hellfighters
The Green Berets
They Were Expendable
McClintock
North To Alaska
Many of his other works are still good, and worth watching, but these are the ones I've sat through over and over again over the past 30 years or so.

Which one is it where he had an old bullet in his shoulder and had to cycle the Winchester one-handed (later copied by Arnie in T2)?
That one.

El Dorado
Ride Boley Ride...to that town called El Dorado
-
In El Dorado, the bullet was in his back, not his shoulder. Michelle Carey shot him in the back early in the movie. And later saved his life by shooting Ed Asner.
It was sort of a remake of Rio Bravo, and later he did Rio Lobo, which was also a remake of Rio Bravo.

Knew that...Didnt want to say anyone was mistaken. I don't recall one where he was using that 30-30 with one arm because of a bad shoulder...but then again...its very possible.
El Dorado
Gaily bedight,
A gallant knight,
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of Eldorado.
But he grew old
This knight so bold
And o'er his heart a shadow
Fell as he found
No spot of ground
That looked like Eldorado.
And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow
"Shadow," said he,
"Where can it be-
This land of Eldorado?"
"Over the Mountains Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,"
The shade replied
"If you seek for Eldorado!"

They were all watchable ... love Wayne movies.
The Shootist ... great cast.
The Searchers ... best movie.
Red River ... Good acting job, later The Cowboys.
Then there was ...
The Conqueror ... Wayne in a fu man chu and oriental eye makeup ... Mongols speaking Shakespearean lines.
"I feel this Tartar woman is for me, and my blood says, take her. There are moments for wisdom and moments when I listen to my blood; my blood says, take this Tartar woman." (Wayne)
and
"Kumlik's daughter! Spawn of the devil! Let your men make sport with her!" (Agnes Moorehead)
"No, mo-ther, I will keep this wo-man for my own plea-sure!" (Wayne)
Easily a all time worst 50 film and winner of the prestigious Golden Turkey Award ... but fun to watch never the less.
