The problem with Gifs, from what I understand, is that Compuserve still owns rights for the image format and still charges a fee for any program that creates Gifs.  This makes Gif shareware impossible.  Correct me if I’m wrong; I hope I am.

GIF Construction Set Professional can make Gifs from movies, I think.  I've never tried it but think I saw it in the menu.

I found one that I thought it worked, but it dont so I give up on it tonight.

I absolutely dont know how to take a movie clip and turn bits and pieces of it into an animated image, say 320 x 280 in size. I would have to start from step 1 and go slowly from there, I dont understand any of it.

Heres a couple of examples of taking a video clip and making images like this

The images above have long animation sequences, like something I want to create. My guess they were ripped from a video file and turned into an animated image, but I dont have the slightest idea how to start

Havent read the link, but cant you use that program the film makers use to make AH films from the .ahf files?

Can't remember the name of it.

Edit: Think it is called FRAPS if i remember rightly.

Oops, misread it.  Was thinking of making a movie from an animated gif..

To do it the other way, i think a program called Bink can do it.

You just need to capture each frame of the video file into image, then string them together as an animated gif.

Google search "Free Gif Animator" More choices than you can shake a stick at!

I've used Gif Const set pro and its nice, incredibly easy.
I've also used the coffee cup animator, and its not bad either.

You CAN find free versions if you look.

I'd suggest that you may want to look at this one first.

I've always been favorably impressed with software from download.com.

Once I have the images that I want to use I use another free program
http://www.irfanview.com  to open, crop or resize, and save as .gif. Then its childs play to add the images, play with timing, etc and build your animated gif.

I got one called UnFreez,  I dont know if it does movies.   Pretty simple to use,  just make your frames and then drop them into the window.  Freeware

I made this with about 8 frames
