the song was originally titled in the garden of venus but the lead singer Doug Ingle was so plastered he mumbled what you hear. that goes back to July 1968.
on another note it's cool to see kids "discover" this great stuff. my 16 year old does it all the time.
-
:D this is one of the few songs my parents don't get mad over me turning it up
‡Edited for a few spelling issues

I always thought it was "In the Garden of Eden" but the beauty of it is we'll never make any sense of the mumbling so it could be anything.

You mean "In the garden of Eden", right? When drunk as a skunk, Doug Ingle recited the lyric, it was slurred into in-a-gadda-da-vida. It was written down phonetically by Ron Bushy. The next day when they reviewed the lyric, they decided to keep the phonetically spelling.

Iron Butterfly was the first band to have two albums in the top 10 at the same time.
Can anybody name the second band to do that?

Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass had 4 simultanious Billboard Top 10 albums in 1966.

I would have to be smashed to listen to that LOL:rofl

Hmmm... it might have been two ROCK albums, or two albums reach #1 in the same year.
Crud I forget. It's a "triva pursuit" question.
(Guns and Roses was the 2nd. Now if I can only remember the correct question)

I was going through some my old albums and found this Steppenwolf song. It's amazing how revelvent the lyrics are almost 40 years later.
63tb
From the 1970 release "Monster"
Words and music by John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, Nick St. Nicholas and Larry Byrom
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And 'til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog
And though the past has it's share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it's protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching
America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

there are two versions of the tale. one is the garden of eden. but if you look it up you may find that it was written as "in the garden of venus". in any event he sure was drunk though. :D it be july 1968, I'm in Hialeah Jr. High for my third period sience TV class and the nazi dyke that ran the asylum failed to show. there are 300+ kids in the auditorium, yup 300 kids in one science class held in the school auditorium with no adult supervision. some kid produces the just purchased copy of this soon to be classic, places it on the turntable and commences to play. intelligently the volume was kept relatively low. the whole 18 minute long song was played. there wasn't a whisper in the room. truly mind blowing stuff for that time. just as the tune finished the nazi showed up and the album was confiscated and the responsible parties were taken to gestapo HQ for a date with Mr. Aguire and his paddle ball paddle. great stuff.

B.S. Mac, that's a crock and a cop out and you know it!

"In the Garden of Eden" was the name of the tune. But, we all know what it became after the recording.

I have heard at least five different interviews with Doug Ingle saying "In the Garden of Eden". He always said he was "buzzing on alcohol and drunk when he sang it."
-
ok I looked it up. wiki may not be the best source here's what they say. some of it is new to me. I have seen interviews with both "eden" and "venus" used. I did hear bushy say he wrote "venus" in an interview that was on XM I think a while back.
anyways read for yourself and draw your own conclusions

A better source is Iron Butterfly's own website.....
And, I have also seen Ingle interviews stating "eden". Either way, it's not worth the trouble to debate.

Exactly.

the liner notes to the re release from 1995 state "venus" as well. you two should take the argument up with ron bushy and tell him what he wrote then. I don't suppose either of you have gone to band's website huh?
-
Sat in a session with a couple of the guys in the mid eighties, they argued over the lyrics meaning as well, something about the amount of acid they dropped that year left blurry memories.. In comparison to the quality of musicians of the local music scene the Iron B guys were not very talented, but fun to hang out with for obvious reasons.
-
Will you dudes quit arguing I'm trippin to this song!
side note.... any of us who were aspiring drummers tried to emulate that solo.
Drove mom nuts.

The best version of this song was on the Simpsons.:rofl
