In my opinion the FCC's stance on no to cell phone usage on aircraft is the right choice. It seems like now being on a plane is the only place to get away from the d*** telephone in one fashion or another.

Another blow struck for communism. I guess the private businesses can't decide for themselves if they want people to communicate on cell phones while flying on their airplanes, they need the nanny government tell them how to run their companies.

Well its a good thing you socialists and draft dogers are safe up there, Thrawn. We're a few paces behind you on the communism front tho.
Frankly, I "overhear" enough cell phone calls in theaters, malls, stores, gym, etc....for what it costs to fly, its nice to know there's ONE place I wont have to hear it all.

I remember an article just a few weeks ago about two incidents of cell phones causing a navigation and ILS error. I don't think turning off a cell phone is the end of the world. Believe it or not, businesses used to exist and even thrive before cell phones and email. :D

I had a full scale deflection on an ILS when my phone started ringing. It does somethin.

Cellphones definitely cause interference.
You can hear the interference in the headset for the radio and they also set off certain types of smoke detectors in aircraft.
I fly a large corporate jet and every once in a while someone walks into the rear lavatory with a phone they forgot to turn off.
It sets off the Smoke Lavatory Caution message and I have to send the Flight Attendant back to check.
Cellphones are active transmitters ALL the time and that is a bad thing on an airplane that is completely electronic.

I can tell when someone's calling when I'm using my desktop comp with the CRT. It makes the screen ribbon then vibrate everywhere for a second or two before it rings. Smaller versions of that at random appearances.

2. As to your test, a single phone may or may not cause interference as you saw, but multiple phones operating at different frequencies (800, 900, 1800 & 1900MHz.) can mix with each other to create other frequencies and which can also increase the probablility of causing issues with aviation instrumentation.
One other item, most of the planes manufactured in the last 10 years are now using wirless transponders and not wiring harnesses to communicate with the planes sensors. This is even more of an issue especially when planes travel into areas not natiative to where the plane was designed or manufactured as different countries have different frequency allocations.
The FAA and FCC are doing the right thing by restricting the use on board aircraft.

Um, I'm neither a socialist or a draft dodger. And true, the US is a few paces behind Canada when it comes to socialism, but policies like the one posted and their support by people who nominally call themselves conservatives makes me think that the US won't be behind for long.
Just because I live amongst socialist, doesn't mean I are one. And just because people say they are capitalist doesn't mean they are either. As many people demonstrate on this board everyday.

There's another place, your own private property which you should be able to dispose of as you see fit. Just like the private owners of the airplanes we are talking about. If there is such a demand for cellless flights, invest in companies that providing them, and make a fortune. Instead of advocating that the government force other people to do what you want them to.
Freedom, it was and is a good idea.
