He was born near Philidelphia in 1919.He grew up in an Irish catholic family who ran a grocery store, he worked there running a truck to market st in philly every day until he was drafted into the army in 1940.
What was to be one year in the army of course turned into nearly six with the start of WWII. He attended infantry school at Ft Polk la., artillery school at ft Sill Ok.,Radio school at Ft monmouth Nj, And OCS back at FT Polk.
He was sent to the pacific where he was training for island operations when the 1St marine div. needed to be rounded out he was attached to them as a 1st leutenant,on the eve of the siapan invasion he was promoted to captain when his CO was killed in some accident on a liberty ship, and he hit the beachs with the first wave of marines.
He stayed on in siapan until the end of the war chaseing down snipers who would shoot at the B29's taking off for japan.
After the war he returned to Pa where he raised a family, 11 children by the time he was 42. Moved the family to South Jersey when "that damn acme market opened up" he pronouced acme as "ack-a-me".
He worked a couple different jobs befor becoming a carpenter, later a contractor,who's company still runs in Glassboro Nj to this day, And finally retireing with his wife of over 60 years in Vineland NJ.
He was a hardworking, kind, honest, understanding and loyal man. In the early morning hours of April 5th 2007 he closed his eyes for the last time.
The world lost a great man, I lost my father.

The Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass;
He hoped his shoes were shining bright,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't;
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough;
I've had to break your rules my Lord,
Because the world is awfully tough.
But, I never took a thing
That wasn't mine to keep;
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear;
And sometimes ... God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here;
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand;
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints often trod;
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, soldier,
You've borne your burdens well;
Come walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in HELL!"

I found out about my father, yesterday morning at work.Of course his death was on my mind since that moment, but it didn't really register until this morning.
I run an auto center and as the funeral is not until thurs. the 12th,I tryed to rearange my schedule to take the time off then,and it was some juggling, this morning over coffee and reading the boards it started to hit me, thats when I wrote this thread, much easier for me to type it then say it, I actually regreted posting it here, I didn't mean to make a fuss. Today was a very long day for me.
But im so glad I did, thank you all for your kind words they really mean alot to me as I am not one that enjoys face to face emotion. I was doing pretty well keeping it togeather until i read Hornet33's poem, ty for that.
Thankyou all, Yanks

Your welcome sir. By the way, your dad and I stomped some of the same ground. I attended Army basic and AIT at Ft Sill. I read that he was there, I remembered that poem and it just seemed to fit.
I'm sorry for your loss, but remember he is in a better place now.
As a fellow redleg and Irish Catholic myself, I'll hoist a glass in his honor for his service, and offer up a prayer thanking the Lord that He let us have him at a time when we needed him most, and to take care of him now that he's with the Lord.
-
Yanks all I can say is that to take a measure of a man all you have to do is look at their children.
Every single interaction I've had with you in this game has been a pleasant and positive experience. Youre a friend to me as I hope I am to you.
Reading about him reminded me of one of the greatest men I will ever know my grandfather.
From all of my family to you and yours our heartfelt thoughts and prayers will be with you through this time.

A Soldier Died Today
He was getting old and paunchy,
And his hair was falling fast;
He sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
He told of a war he had fought in
And the deeds that he had done;
In his exploits with his buddies ...
They were heroes....everyone.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors,
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened ...
For they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away;
And the world's a little poorer,
For a soldier died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife;
For he just lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
Quietly going on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died today.
When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state;
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories,
From the time that they were young;
But the passing of a soldier,
Goes unnoticed and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution,
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise,
And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow,
Who in the time of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country
And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are sometimes disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension ... small.
It's so easy to forget them,
For it was so long ago,
That our Bob's and Jim's and Johnny's,
Went to battle, but we know ...
It was not the politicians,
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom,
That our Country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand ...
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?
Or would you want a Soldier,
Who has sworn to defend,
His home, his kin, and Country,
And would fight until the end?
He was just a common Soldier
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us,
We may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict,
Then we find the Soldier's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles,
The damn politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor,
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage,
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline,
In the paper that might say,
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING"
"For a Soldier Died Today."

With deepest sympathy and as is the motto of the 31st FG your DAD is: "Returning With Honor"

Yanks,
