Title: boot to desktop
Post by: RTR on January 02, 2002, 01:25:00 PM
Hi folks, I sure hope someone can help me here. I have been wrestling with this for 2 months now. What happens is this. I can launch the game and it plays fine. However I always get booted back to my desktop. It is never consistent on how long it takes but it always happens. Sometimes I can get 2 or 3 flights in, other times not even one. But the only thing that is consistent is i get booted every time. This is getting pretty frustrating. Also when I am in the game and select the map and field names they are displayed poorly on the map and pretty much unreadable. I have uninstalled the game, my vid driver and reinstalled all to no avail.
I have everything shut down except explorer and systray before i launch the game. I get framerates of 6 to 11 or 12 when i initially take off and then get FR in the low 20's in flight.
My system specs are:
500mhz
160mb SDRAM
Windows 98SE
ATI Rage pro turbo 2Xagp with 4mb SGRAM
Crystal CS4280 3D PCI Audio
I downloaded and installed the latest driver for my vid card from ati File version is 4.11.2560
And I am running DirectX8.1
I should add that I am not running a Firewall on my system and that my system works fine in all other game applications.
I have gone to msconfig and unchecked all non essential stuff from my startup menu and when I shut everything down except explorer and Systray before launching AH my system resources are 99% free.
I have kicked the dog, yelled at the kids, flung dog watermelon into the neighbors yard and pulled out what little hair I have left. All to no avail.. HELP!!!!
Could this be an issue with my vid card? Is 4MB enough there??
Also please know that I am pretty much a computer illiterate so small words spoken slowly work for me.
Thanks folks.

pull out the 32meg stick and try it that way.I bet the problem surfaced right around ver 1.08 release.

RTR,

You can try a RAM memory manager like Cashman.  It seemed to work for a few in my squad with the same problem.

That video card just isn't going to cut it.  That's your problem.

I know your processor is 500 Mhz, but which processor is it?  That matters.

A cheap GeForce 2 MX for example should give you a big boost.  That video card just can't handle the increase load that 1.08 brings to AH.  It's your bottleneck.

okay foks. Thanks for all your input. I did learn alot. however the problem turned out to be a windows problem. I am up and flying. I reinstalled windows and everything works now. I should have done this before. And just for info..my vid card seems to provide adequate, (read just barely usable here) service. I get frame rates in the high 20's. not great but flyable. New pooter in the works anyway :))
Unfortunately I had to go back to RW and work so will not be flying regularly for a bit. (man this work stuff sure gets in the way hehe)
                    thanks folks, and Cheers
