Title: The update is great but 1 thing
Post by: crockett on April 11, 2007, 08:36:11 PM
I like just about everything in the new upgrade sofar but one thing. I dunno if maybe it's something in my settings or what, but when in a plane it's really hard to get a sense of "depth" to the ground.

It's fairly hard to get a feel or tell where the hills are specially when flying on the deck.

Also one side note and to think about, with the new  ground layout it's going to be very hard to try and get m3's to a town now. (harder than it was already)

There is no where to hide them and no plce to get cover if a plane spots you.

I agree.  I hate to say this when everyone's worked so hard, but I actually prefer it the way it was by far.  The shorelines are the only thing that is visually better now; everything else is worse.

Patch 0 is all that you need to hear. For the AH gods have heard you and shall wave their fingers to make mountain shading and better sun-sets. Better get those shades.

Yea I'm not really complaining about it, mainly just pointing it out to make sure it wasn't a bad setting on my end.  Overall I like the new update, it's  just with my LCD monitor the groud starts to bug my eyes after a short time in the air. Which didn't happen to me with the old textures.

As much as I hate to say it, I think I liked the trees from the old terrain better...  They didn't look the best, but they made the ground more interesting to fly over (and it was fun to shake guys on your six by weaving in and out of em).  I think way too many trees got taken out this go-round.    It's so barren now that it's almost like flying over Aces High 1 terrain...

I definitely like that a beach got added, though.  :aok

The terrain color/shades are SOOOO DARK!!!

It makes my eye HURT to fly now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flew for maybe 20 minutes.

Got a headache!  Gamma was at 1.4 before patch, now it's at 1.5 but doesn't seem to help much.

May have to quite AH to avoid eye strain/headaches :(

The evening time last what? 30 min at the most? take a break during that time talk to the wife and kids grab a bear and watch tool time or something the new terrain is fine, few glitches but those will be fixed in the upcoming patches. I'm so tiered of the whining HTC finally puts out a new patch that looks great and not even a hour into it people are crying and complaining about this that etc.  Yes, with a new version there will be glitches report them *don't cry* and they will most likely be fixed in the next patch update*probly in a day or two*

OK i feel better now :D

P.S. HTC new stuff looks great.

The sun was at noon!

Had gamma to 1.5, flew for 20 minutes and got a headache.

That didn't happen before the patch.

IT'S TOO DARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So at least I'm not the only one that it's bugging like that.  It irritates my eyes if I fly too much with the new ground textures. It's not as bad on the ground in a gv, but still get a little of it then.

Anyone know if there is anyway to go back to the old ground textures?

Husky01 grow up this is a legit complaint so chill out.

Rare moment:  I like this patch, the airbase runway looks great and I dont seem to be taking a hit on the trees

However, near bases and towns, Im hitting some stutters.  Gonna try some tweaking on my side

You might try to defrag your HD first. After rebuild of the cache, I was experiencing a lot of stutters. I did check my drive and noted >1000 new fragmented files ;)

After running a defrag program, almost all stutters were gone.

Put me on the "I miss all the old trees" list.
Title: Hmm..
Post by: PK1Mw on April 11, 2007, 11:07:33 PM
Can't say I like the old trees, but the terrain did somewhat look better. But I would rather keep it the way it is for the fact even though its darker, it's a lot more clear, and my frame rates are a lot better since all of the old trees arent here to suck the frames.

WTG HTC, this one was definitely for the better! :aok

I don't care about how pretty it looks, really, but I am not flying until they fix the darkness problem.

Maybe just make the terrain a little lighter. I have only seen grass that dark once and it was fake. Get real grass colors then it wont hurt our eyes that much.

Yes it is a stupid first post but what can I say?

Title: The update is great but 1 thing
Post by: Sincraft on April 11, 2007, 11:43:00 PM
yea this sucks.  Terrain is great but the brightness needs turned about about 50% to even come close to real life?

Aren't there any real pilots OR PEOPLE WHO HAVE FLIED IN THEIR LIVES that realize this is SO far off that it's almost laughable?

on a positive note, the sun is washing my screen when going direct in, but things are no longer annoying like they used to be.  However with screen scratches etc, the glare was about right before in comparison to 'real life' but I do prefer it now :)

I don't see how you all can say the old terrain was better as Slash said you all are nuts.  The reason it looks so different to you is well it is its completely different play with it for an hour or two and you get really used to it, your depth perception comes back things don't look as "dark" and its quite nice to just well fly around and enjoy the view!

BTW waffle did you brand all your sheep?

That's ridiculous.  I've seen real landscapes from the air on cloudless days at high noon, and this looks nothing like it.  Aces High II at noon, right now, looks like the real world at dusk.  The previous version was much more correct.  Don't you tell me that this is "better."  If I have to, I'll compare photographs to prove it.

I told Newbs that was too much info but well, thats the way he is.

and yes arenas are too dark, yall young ones eyes are better than us old folks.

tuned gamma til it was too bright. there is no setting that is easy on the old eyes.

yall wet behind the ears don't get it yet and I laugh because your day is coming. yep the day will come when you go to bed tired and get up tired. joints all creaky on you. can't see good or hear good, etc.

Gotta chime in that the new trees look great, as does the beach and some of the ideas for placing folaige around the bases.  Also, the bases a koola and the Firefly seems well done

HOWEVER, I have to agree that visually everything is both too stark and without necessary color contrast to get any depth perception, or textual clues to indicate level ground vs. hills, etc.  Also, the water colors are wrong, wrong, wrong.  Especially the lake in the town.

First time in the town I didn't even recognize the lake and drove right in it.  Took me two minutes to realize it wasn't an invisible glitch, but that I had run into to the lake (and it was now undrivable).  It looked like another, slightly differently colored patch of ground.  Even though eventually we will know this is water, NOT being able to visually identify the lake as water on first introduction means its graphically missing the necessary clues (in this case color) to identify it.

In general everything is a bit dark and un-contrasty (and I run constantly with 1.3 gamma).  I asked over channel if this was night, but someone point out the sun was directly overhead.  LOL

If visuals stay this way, I'm seriously concerned my eyes won't be able to adapt.

I apologise.  Didnt know I had to be a member of the Aces High geriatric club to warrant anyone taking my post seriously.  I am all for feedback, of the constructive type.  Whinging like a spoiled brat to the four winds doesnt exactly fall under that category.  Maybe $15 is a lot out of his social security check and feels like he can demand an instant patch within the day.  All I am saying is, make your point heard, lay out your arguments logically and hope corrective action is hopefully taken.

On another point, calling me a newb based on my number of posts or date I registered in the BBS is nothing short of amusing.   Obviously, not the birghtest cookies in the jar.

I think they turned the sun effects way down, and turned the LIGHT way down as well. Can we get a happy medium? Say halfway between what we had and the new patch?

I was in the TA and I was sure it was twilight but no there is the sun straight up at 12:00. Looking out my window it was darker in there than it was at 8:00 at night on a cloudy day in North Dakota. (aprox 20 - 40 min till full dark)

Yes thats right, high noon in AH and the sky was darker than dusk.

Great fix list HTC, good stuff, firefly looks interesting.

But WAY too dark to be comfortable flying.  Even after I turned the gamma up.

Ya don't think they realized the all of the things you are saying before releasing the patch? Fallen on deaf ears.

If you call  and speak to them directly you will have an ear...and a response that goes like...That is understandable but...

It will never go back nor will the be any sort of compromise.

It may make you feel as if you collective point of view has been heard in reality they have already taken into consideration that naturally there will be a considerable group of whiners when it comes to the area of change/progress.

When you've been here long enough you come to realise...this to be true.

At first I had no problem with the shades/color. Lifted off and thought ... hey this looked pretty good...

got into a few fights with allot of turning, climbing and diving.........

Maybe it's the rapid change required to the eye from looking at the bright then the dark?

Not sure ....

Just know I got a headache after 20 minutes or so of flying.

Quick note:

Starcraft ... NP

Quake 4 ... NP

Doom 3 ... NP

IL2 ... NP

Farcry ... NP

Call of Duty 2 ... NP

Dawn of War 40k ... NP

Several other PC Games ... NP

AceHigh II after last patch ... HEADACHE!

When AHII 1st came out I complained to several that there was an, IMHO, imbalance with the ground and sky colors/shades.

Some of my squadies agreed. Had to do something that was unneeded in AHI, INCREASE GAMMA. Increased it from 1.0 to 1.4 to be able to see and fight.

Yes stuff LOOKS GOOD! The art work is GREAT! IMHO it is really really good, and for the GV'ers it's probably wonderful!!!!!!!!! Is AHII going to become another WWII Online?

BUT the contrast? or maybe a better way of expressing it, the choice of color shades when combined SEEM to HURT the eyes, or create eye strain.

With this patch it SEEMS much more pronounced then before.

No mater where I put gamma, no mater how I adjust my monitor settings, no mater what I do, I can not set AHII this patch to ANY level of eye comfort.

EMU why you takin such an attitude?????

Not whining about the actual patch only the coloring and I'm stating fact!  AND I"M NOT ALONE IN THAT VIEW POINT!

I want to remain an AH customer.

IF there will be NO CHANGE as Triumph seems to think, then sadly I'm done here......................... ............................. .....

If I get a headache due to the color/shade/contrast everytime in AH then I will reach a point where the discomfort will make me STOP.

If I STOP then why pay for something I can't use????

I seriously dont see things dark on my screen.  Dont know what it could be.  Maybe my brightness or contrast settings on my monitor? I dont know.  Weird. Things are definitely darker and higher contrasting but nothing that is preventing me from carrying on as I was before the patch.

The only thing that I do agree with is that depth perception is not as good as it used to be.  It is very hard (almost impossible) to spot changes on the terrain (hills, dips, etc)... I took a Jeep out just to check things out and rolled over twice due to failing to realize there was a hill right in front of me.

Only problem I have is that the green is too intense. Everything else is an improvment. Now if the towns were only 4X larger, the field guns 10X harder to kill and about 2X as many FHs then I'd be happier still.

WTG HTC!

I beg to differ...

ok guys lets not get into a bash war.. The topic was meant to be constructive.

Lets quit bashing HT as they did just release a big update, which is what most of us want.

Then the guys that post just to bash the people complaining just to tell them they are whiners.. Well guess what you're whining too so get over it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to the important business at t hand the game update..

I personally like the update, I just wanted to make HT aware that the grass texture bothers myself and a several other players. I think it's the lack of "depth" that screws with the eyes.

Also on the darkness I noticed that I can set my gamma so it's acceptable but then it has other effects.

1) It tends to change the GV model's to more of a "white" look, so they are much easier to spot and IMO kinda a built in cheat.  Needs to be fixed for the fairness in the game.

2) The other thing is if you happen to alt tab out of the game, you come back in to the original "dark gamma" and have to re-set it under options. (didn't do this b4)

The other deal is overall I like the new ground layouts with the new trees and hedge rows and so on, makes GV vs GV battles a lot more fun.  However most of the ground is very baron and lacks enough places to hide from enemy planes.

IL2's can now have a field day on GV's attacking a base because there is no place at all the hide from planes. At least in the past we have some cover even though it wasn't much. Much less try to sneak a M3 with troops into a heavily defended base.

One other issue that I've noticed is I now find myself having to switch from Vis mode 1 to vis mode 3 quite a bit.. I never had to do that in the past, I just set up for close range and could still see things far off  or close up, with no issues.

That would certainly prevent excessive use of smilies.

I like most everything about the new look, except the dark lime green grass (astroturf?) and the dark trees. The trees look really great and detailed but just too dark. Same with the hedge rows.

If I could suggest...

Lighten the color of the grass from the lime green (or) speckle some lighter colors in it. Specks might be more natural.

Lighten the tops and sides of the trees, keep lower part of trees as is (light effect of sun hitting the tops). This should give a more natural affect as you fly over them. As-is, the trees look very much like GVs as you fly over them or even look at them from a GV. You really have to zoom way out to tell a tree from a GV.

I am still enjoying the new features and the new tank. Hope the colors and darkness can be corrected.

Thanks for the update!

(I have a new bright Envision 19' LCD monitor by the way and that is what I am using.)

First the good news.
When your on the ground the update looks ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

Unfortunately once you get airborn. Thats pretty much where the good news ends

First few posts summed it up pretty good for me.
Lack of depth.
Its like there is little to no shading or something its like its too bland

The mountains once pretty rounded now seem to have more of a straight line angular shape to them Its almost like your looking at it the old terrain in F3 mode

The ground from the air in the old version looked 1,000 times more realistic then the new version.
the new version isnt even close
The ground looked like,, well the ground, You could easily make out a mountain side from a valley. Now it looks like they all just kinda mush together.

All in all looks more 2Dsh then 3D

the water, is ...ok but I think Fester had the right idea with the color on the couple of maps he did a few versions ago

Honestly it reminds me of graphics on a game I used to play on my old Amiga 2000

Husky1 Couldnt find a thing I could agree with you on in this thread in the slightest

When your OTD (as in a few hundred feet) low or on the ground it looks GREAT. Once you climb to even 5K. It looks horrid almost like its only half done

I'd say more then anything it needs more trees and better shading around the hills and where the mountains meet the valleys.

Its definately missing a major something
Its definately not the gamma. its the over all shading and lack of detail once you get airborne and arent looking at a base or town

I even have my detail sliders on max. It helped a bit ithout loosing too much on the FR but its still way off

I completely agree with DREDIOCK's post - he summed up quite nicely how I feel about the new graphics.  I know a lot of hard work went into the changes so it's difficult to say "well, I don't really like..."
Given the amount of feedback, it is my hope that HT will continue to tweak the graphics.  All in all it's a great game - IMO the best fun $15 can buy.

Everything looks more realistic to me.  It is a lot darker, would like to fight somewhere besides Ireland every map (that green grass is to die for)
