Title: If you won
Post by: cav58d on April 11, 2007, 08:54:05 PM
If you were to win tonights powerball and buy an airplane(s), what would they be?

For me, i'd definately go with an Edge 540 for fun, and maybe a King Air 200 for travel.

What would your choices be?

A highly modified C-130 or surplus C-141. Front half of the cargo hold would be outfitted as a nice office/living space and the rear half would be standard cargo hold for my truck to ride in.

I hate rental cars and would rathe take my own with me if I went somewhere.

yea, scratch the edge and the king air....

I'd buy out the best f4U corsair in flying condition, get heritage flight qualified, and spend the rest of my life flying airshows.....drroooool.

I'd probably go find a couple of P-38's that I could get rebuilt, so that rather than buy a plane that was already flying, I could get a couple that didn't fly back in the air.

I'd also probably pick up an AT-6, and go out and pay Steve Hinton to teach me to fly. I figure if you can afford it, there's no substitute for learning from the best.

If I had any left I wanted to spend on aircraft, I'd pick up a Baron, one of the juiced up versions (up engined, with turbochargers and the upgraded props) to fly on a regular basis (since I wouldn't want to use the P-38 as a utility plane, and it doesn't have much in the way of passenger space).

Hornet has a good idea, but I'd have to pick.....I'm not sure.  A WW2 aircraft then I'd force Bodhi to fix it.

* "since 1991, a number of Yak-3 have been newly manufactured by Yakovlev for the warbird market using the original plans and dies. These are powered by Allison V-1710 engines and have the designation Yak-3M. Several of these are airworthy today, mostly in the United States, but also in Germany and Australia."

* Also about 45 surviving, flight-worthy A-26 Invader airframes around.  I might look to one of them.

Tooling machinery to make any plane I want.
Failing that, I guess some rare plane.. like  Bugatti 100P or something.

You don't have to win the lottery to pull that one off ;)  But if I did, probably something from Soviet surpluss stocks.  Probably an SU27 or Mig29, spare pair of engines, and 3 or 4 russians for maintenace.

I know a good dog dentist JB?

As for aircraft I would buy, funny enough I was thinking about it the other day when I flew over a paved private runway beside a big house in the country. 'Dolly Grove' it's called.  He has a chopper and a TBM.

First thing I'd do is get a big house and build a runway beside it, call it something less gay than 'Dolly Grove' and fill my hangar with an F4U of course, a Spit, probably a T6 to train on before I try to fly the 'Ensign Eliminator'. A helicopter, any old one will do, to bring the wife shopping. Although there is a guy who flies an old UH1B to work most days. So maybe a Huey. I need something to get to the South of France or Spain in a hurry so most likely a Citation or one of those new light jets.
Then maybe some kind of ex military jet. I'd like an F104 but doubt I could get one, so some kind of ex commie jet will do but I'd really prefer a Sabre or a Hunter. I could probably afford a Lightning but doubt the aviation authorities would let me fly it. Speaking of Lightnings, a P38 would be acquired and a Hurricane painted in Irish Air Corps colours. Also a Stearman would be nice and a nice collection of pre war light aircraft, a Tiger Moth, a Piper Cub of course (yellow naturally) and I would go to America and look for some of those weird pre war, depression era light aircraft. The Stinson this, the Aeronca that, a Waco and definitely a Beechcraft Staggerwing.

Oh and I really want a Sherman tank.

Not that I've really thought about it much:aok

How much does power loto pay? 50M? 100M?

Is that really enough to buy those toys and maintain them?

I'd probably want to get a plane or two, then make a contribution to someone like the Confederate Air Force so they can keep some of those old birds flying.  Instead of just locking them up in my own house, keep 'em out in the lime light where kids of all ages can keep enjoying them.

Actually screw the powerball, I just need to convince Kermit Weeks that he needs to adopt a 27 year old son.

Either or both of the new Me-262's or the Fw-190's their making.

Then the rest to establish a Texas Blues Museum, something looong over due here.

Hornet  had a great idea IMO. Except I'd probably go with a mini cooper and a pair of scooters to keep weight/space required down. Like an RV on wings with ground transport brought along.

PBY Catalina rigged to hold a couple of Kayaks.  Your basic go anywhere in the world to fish that you want rig. Small galley basic living quarters built in forward. So the girls could sleep aboard, while us men lounge around a campfire ashore.
Kind of a cross between Hornets idea with a nautical/fishing boating theme.

Might have to go up to one of the bigger flying boats to pull it off.

And if there was money left over a pair of Rv8's with twin paintball guns so I can duel my friends/squad mates.
