Pooter died
There I was driving along in that beautiful M4 admiring the new trees, and BAM, bomb hit, tank dead and I see the tower for about a half a second, then POOF......

Blank screen.............hmmmmmmmmm mmm daggummit....what the hek.....more hmmmmmm.

Well, No matter what I do I can't get a signal to the monitor, that should be simple enough to fix. Ya right. Pooter won't boot up at all. It will turn on but won't load.

Hard drive? nope, hooked it up to other puter, worked fine.
Vid card? nope, same thing, worked on other puter.
Power supply? nope, that s fine.
Mother board? maybe.....went as far as swapping it out with another of the same board. same result, pooooter won't boot.
Hmmm, let's try another hard drive, dang, time to go to work
Well, now I have something to do when I get up Thursday afternoon.
I'll be up tomorrow on another puter, just need to dl AH, sounds, install stick, etc......

Nothing like computers to drive ya nuts  lol. So much entertainment and frustration in one box is amazing

Any suggestions or ideas on what I might look for or have overlooked? Not that I'm against putting together another box  I need the present one to work, plus it's a good learning experience.

Thanks guys

Rob

You mentioned the screen wouldn't turn on and then that your computer wouldn't boot. My question however is this, when you start your computer, does your monitor activate so you can at least see what's going on?

Did you check to see if your RAM may have been dislocated.  My wife's puter stopped giving a signal to monitor.  I thought it was a bad vid card because got same thing when I connected puter to another monitor.  However, when I purchased new vid card, got same thing.  As it turned out, RAM stick had been dislocated and was not completed seated. How that happen is unknown, but it fixed the problem.  Saved me $100.00 because I took the vid card back to the store for a refund.

Its called "chip creep". It can and does happen due to temperature fluctuations due to, among other things, users consistently turning their computer off when they're not in use. The off and on expansion due to heat and then contraction due to cooler temps cause socketed chips to "creep" loose. Of course chip creep due to movement and vibration is a no brainer. Its a known factor, not just something I made up on the fly.

Never had this happen before, yet the last two things I could've thought up would be the RAM or the Processor. One of the two are fried / disconnected.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen.

Nothing got to the monitor, couldn't get a pic of anything.  The puter would power up, but that's it.  The HDD would't even engage.  Thought of the RAM issue, reseated, and even tried a couple of other sticks....no joy :(

I'll keep plugging away at it.  Good project to see if the brain box can defeat the metal box.   Boy, am I in trouble ;)

Thank God I have other puters, pieces and parts laying around.  No AH at all would probably send me to the looney bin.

Going to use my son's new box for AH for a bit, he's out of town for a week, but it's OS is VISTA.  Well, now it's off to Skuz's VISTA post :O

Thanks again for the brainstorming!

Rob

cpu toast?

its kinda hard to test without testing it on a known good system , but then your taking a chance (possibly) with screwing another motherboard . Ive burnt cpu's and thats the exact same thing that would happen . It would power on and all the fans would spin , but it wouldn't beep or post .

What cpu are you using and have you noticed any lock ups or general slow responces from you system prior to the problem?

Most likely a CPU burn out. Could also be the possibility that the boot-up devices are not there (connected to the motherboard) and the computer freaks thanks to it closing any data requests for the Video Card.
