Was announced today that this is going to be our standard assault rifle, but i have never seen or held one.

Um? Who's getting the H&K 416 as a "standard assault rifle", and WHERE did you hear this?

The H&K 416 has made the news cycles in Army Times and other places recently. SOG have been using them for a while in OIF and OEF, among other operations, but SOG get to try out and purchase pretty much whatever equipment they want to use, and many pick H&K and FN Herstal products.

The H&K 416 is similar to the Colt M4 carbine and M2 Rifle, but the biggest difference is it use a gas pistol recoil, rather than straight gas recoil. Does not foul the weapon with carbon anywhere as bad as the Colt. Does not subject the bolt to the wear and temperatures that the Colt does. Tends to be more reliable and lasts longer. H&K fit and finish tends to be among the best in the arms industry as well.

As the U.S. Army and DoD are looking for a quantum leap in small arms improvements, rather than incremental, I'd be very surprised if they were switching over. I'd expect Colt to lobby to get their specs changed to be closer to the H&K design if it came to that (Colt doesn't get final say in Colt design FWIU...... Pentagon does) in order to keep their contract.

They run about $1,400 for one off purchases, but H&K can sell them in bulk for a bit over $800 each.

HK416 is probably the best rifle out there today. Good choice Norway!

Post by: Nilsen on April 13, 2007, 04:32:13 PM: Sounds good Grunherz. We placed an order for 8200 rifles today and they will replace and live side by side with upgraded AG3's. I didnt know it was in the running as the replacement rifle as i thought the G36 was the H&K we were testing. Apparently our special forces in afghanistan have used it for some time as part of the field-testing and they were really happy with it.

I would have thought so too and in fact first thought WTF why is HK building this when they have G36 or the G36 based XM8, but in the two cases I have heard of a head to head "contest" between G36 and 416 the 416 has won outright or was bought as replacement to existing G36. And now with the Norway order we cant just say people buy it because it looks/feels/handles like an AR.. Donno. :rolleyes:

As for the other threads in this thread, my sister and her husband live in Denmark. On my next visit there I will insist on a tour to compare Danish, Norwegian and Swedish women. ;)

The Norwegian Army is phasing out it's AG-3's (Norwegian G-3A3) not replacing their G36's with the HK-416. They only use G36s in small numbers anyway.

Wulfie ever fired the Hk-417 (chambered for 7.62 x 51 NATO).

As far as i know only the costal rangers use the G36 now, and they were issued them to test em out as a possible replacement for the AG3

Post by: Nilsen on August 28, 2007, 10:44:12 AM: Just after the contract for 8500 HK 416s we also signed one for 6500 MP-7s to replace MP-5's. They are smaller than the MP5's but appartently better in every way. Would be cool to try both teh HK 416 and the MP7 :)

-edit- looks like we got that 417 20" sniper version too.. that looks even cooler :cool:

I started this back in April and still havent had time to finish it. I didnt like the "beak" placement but figured I'd post it anyway
