I think the new version is a excellent upgrade. The closer to realism only makes the sim tht much more enjoyable. I know that we al l will have to upgrade the hardware, but why not. The closer and closer, I think that this sim woudl be getting to something like the FSX. I know we are well on our way here!
Have a question about the water effects option? I dont see it anymore?
I notice the color of the water also?

I agree.WTG HTC

I looked at the "Read Me" file of all the upgrades last night, and it said it got rid of the water option.
-
I'm guessing they left it out to rework on it.
I really hate to say this, but now that the animated water is out of the game, I can honestly say that it was total crap...

I agree. It looked like blue tinsel.

Almost everybody I fly with has it turned off (and everybody I've asked) because it was an eyesore. I'm glad they did away with it. It means they might do something better in the future.
I very much like the new water texture. Now if only the grass looked as good as the water!

I was hoping the water change was so we could get seaplanes...?

I read all the posts about the update before seeing it for myself. I downloaded it last night and saw it first hand then. I was prepared to be really disappointed. I wasn't. Ok, I don't care for the sparseness of the terrain and I had to up my gamma a bit because of the darkness. However, being able to see the details of the airfields and the towns is going to help JABO considerably. I'm happy about that. Also, I find I can just generally "see" better. Things are a lot clearer I think. That's more important to me than ANYTHING else. I didn't get the sense of "lack of depth" some people have talked about. I actually found when coming out of a split-ess, I can judge how close I am to the ground a little better than before because details of the ground start to get clearer and clearer as I get lower and lower. That's just how it should be IMHO. Maybe it's my graphics card that's the difference here? Interesting.
One extra thing I did which I'm wondering may be an issue for some of you. I first tried downloading the update from the game and when I realized how slow it was I decided to go to the forum and get the update there. That's when I noticed the link to the hires package and decided to go ahead and install that too even though I already had it. (I am running 1024 textures) Could it be that you should install this particular one (AHHIRES2100.EXE) to get better graphics? Honestly, it looks pretty darn good except for the sparseness and the need to boost the gamma a bit.
I do agree that some of the colors could use a bit of tweaking. I really hate the gray color of the water. Out here on the east coast, the Atlantic Ocean does look gray like that though. I liked the more blue from before much better however.
Comments like "I can't play this game now" and "this is horrible" I just can't relate to. Maybe it is my hardware and extra effort to tweak my setup a little that's making the difference for me. At this point at least, HTC gets a big :aok from me!
Oh well, just my opinion once again

I turned it off because I couldn't tell how far from it I was when maneuvering and would crash into it. I would think I had plenty of altitude and *BOOM*

The thing is, simple texture animation without involving those serious shader shi* (the kind of water depiction as seen in Silent Hunter 3/4 or IL2 Perfect options), is nowadays considered pretty much common and cheap method to depict water surface with minmal performance impact.
One thing I couldn't understand, was that the old waters looked so much crappy, and at the same time hit the performance of the game so bad that my screen would stutter every time there was water in view.
-
I was going ot make that point with the WWII seaplanes!
I know there were a few models use during WWII.
I use the HiRez Pack and downloaded that also!
-
I was finally able to turn on animated water a couple of weeks ago when I installed a new graphics card. Now that its gone I don't miss it though. The new color of the water is actually closer to what I'm used to flying over in RL on the Atlantic coast at least.

Yo uare probably right about the color! What about the effects!
especially against the shore line

My problem in the game stems from your profile for the CH setup :lol
I got it off another BBS. Getting used to it now... working great, now if I can get used to the pedals I'll live longer.
Thanks for making available your CH profile

I dont understand why downloading from the UpDate Site should be different from the AutoUpdater when you start HTC?
-
Funny, I've only had a machine and VC capable of running animated water for a few weeks myself. I actually liked it, especially the reflections of the sun. They were spectacular. If you have FSX and turn water effects to full, it looks very much like what the animated water setting produced. Sort of that plastic look. That I can do without but I sure liked the sun reflections.
The only thing I REALLY would like to see "fixed" (not that it's broken) is the contrast (darkness, gamma, whatever). I would always vote for anything that enables me to see better. Better SA is always my goal (thus TIR, better VC, better monitor, etc).

:lol Thanks Shuffler! Glad you've found the profile helpful. Hope the switch to "right-handedness" wasn't too difficult.

I don't know but it is. It's been like that for the ten years I've been doing AH upgrades. I'll wait ten minutes or so and if it's not making good progress, I'll break out, go to the update site and usually have it downloaded in less than five minutes. Case in point: last night, about 5-10 minutes

Because the ground and ocean are only one (maybe a few) polygons deep, you can't make seaplanes or submarines without them falling through the terrain. If you read about the bugs where tanks fall through and fall forever, the same thing would happen I bet. You can recreate it but running a PT into the side of a CV. You sink a little, then fly up into the air, usually coming bacfk down to fall through the ocean.
I could be wrong, though. :D

There are a couple differences. You choose where you want the file. You have to run the file. The autoupdater downloads the same file into the AHII folder (instead of, say, the desktop of My Documents) and runs it automatically.
Seriously, if you've updated automatically before, you can find the patch application in the AHII folder just as if you went to the web page and Save As...ed it there.

I've noticed that green planes REALLY disappear against the new terrain.

Yeah, well, the Blue Planes don't benefit NEARLY as well over the water, so :p :p :p :p :p

That is because most are used in the pacific.
download the skinpacks and go thru them, lots of good colors to go with diffrent water.
