Title: Way too dark.
Post by: daddog on April 14, 2007, 10:15:33 AM
I know others have posted about this, but I have the same problem. We had our first squad night since the update and quite a few of us could hardly see when near the ground. At least 3 or 4 crashed into trees or the ground as we ran one of our NOE missions. I also did once Thursday night prior to our squad night.

When I was in a GV and the sun was only a 1/4 way up the sky I literally could hardly see the ground. Several other squadies were stuck in water they could not see to avoid.

I know some can change their monitor settings to help, but it is still too dark. My son has a new flat screen we purchased at the last con and it is still too dark for his taste, but it does look better than mine.

Anyway hope HTC will consider making things a bit lighter for those with older monitors or older eyes. :)

I think that not older monitors and older eyes -- I think it is too dark.  I have been checking it out after calibrating everything on my system.  Info on that is here:

Yes, it is absolutely too dark.  All the toadies who are saying that it's fine can embrace my stabilizers.

I cant find the comfortable balance either .... I cant gamma up because then the sun burns my eyes too much .

at normal setting my eyes start to hurt after a couple of hours playing . :(

Please lighten it back up alittle (beg beg)

I'm not seeing it "too dark". It has to do with people monitors.. I have a POS Viewsonic, that I thought was a POS until this patch. Now it seems to have saved me going by everyone else's comments. It has 3 different brightness settings, regular, than x3 for Video Games, then x5 for Movies. I adjust it to x3 or x5 and it's perfectly fine.

Guess I'm just the lucky one for buy a POS monitor lol.

I turn up the gamma but it washes it out at the same time.

And now for something completely different. The terrain is just fine in Late War Blue, after a slight gamma adjustment. The map in Late War Orange is way too dark even after severe gamma adjustment. Bye bye Late War Orange :(

If you have a properly calibrated system, such that display gamma is 2.2 (photographic work standard and standard for Internet sRGB color space), everything should look correct at gamma adjust of 1.0.

Yes, one can brighten things up with a gamma adjust of more than 1.0, but the higher the gamma adjust, the more the images will look washed out.

If this version of AH looks fine to a person then I think that person probably has either (1) a gamma adjust set higher than 1.0 (which means images are to some extent washed out compared to what they could be) or (2) has an LCD or other display that does not have a native display gamma of the standard 2.2.

I noticed that Midmesa has some different tiles and a lil more stuff on the ground then the TT and *uterus map* I actually turned my gamma back down to normal in LWO and it seem just fine the added objects on the ground make it 10x easier to keep your depth perception.

Thanks Brooke.
Playing with the gamma helps, but it really does wash things out.

Word.

It might help if the ocean didn't look like a giant sewer.

I calibrated my monitor at the website Superfly linked and things do look better, but it's still to dark even at high noon.
