Ok Ive had a lot of people lately ask me how to make films using FRAPS and Windows Movie Maker so I made a lil write up on how its done using pictures as well.
First off you must download FRAPS either the trial version (Free) or the full version(cost). You may download FRAPS at http://www.fraps.com
The next step is to open up your fraps program and set your record keys to R (It works the best with Aces High film Veiwer)
When you open up FRAPS click on the third tab to the right (Movie Tab). Now where it says select the recording key change it to R. Also make sure that in the bottom left hand corner you click the hide mouse options so your mouse dosnt show up in your films. You may also choss if you want to record the sound or not . Here is a picture to help you fallow along
(http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/1442/frapsbi8.png) (http://imageshack.us)
Next thing to do is open up Aces High Film Viewer and open the film you which to record selected clips from. NOTE: When you are using the trail version of fraps you may only record for 30 seconds at a time and on you final draft at the top http://www.fraps.com will appear in white lettering.
Now when you have messed with the film and have you views set right and have it how you want to record it all you have to do is hit R to start and stop recording. While you are recording the FPS(numbers in the top left corner will turn RED when your recording and Yellow when your not recording. When you stop recording that clip is automatically saved under your fraps file in your Program files under your C disk.
(http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/7222/filmviewerul9.png) (http://imageshack.us)
Ok now you need to upload the clip you have filmed into the Windows Movie Maker Program.
First off start by opening Windows Movie Maker Program. First take what ever song you want to use for the film and drag and place it in movie maker then drag it down to the time line. Ok now we are gonna go threw how to import the clips you have filmed into movie maker. First you go File -->Import into collections-->My computer --> Cdrive--> Program files--> FRAPS. Now once your there you will see the the clips you have recorded in aces high film viewer. NOTE: It can get confusing on which clip is whitch so here is a lil note the last clip you got from aces high is ALWYAS gonna be the last on on the list. Ok once you have found the clip you want simply hit Import
(http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/5417/importinguw8.png) (http://imageshack.us)
Now just drag and place the clip where ever you want down on the time and start making your film!
If anyone has any questions give me a haller ill be glad to help!
-
Yes I have a question? How do you save the video into a format in which you can watch from Windows Player, or Winamp?
-
No fraps saves them to a format automatically that can be used in movie maker
-
Very helpful..i just made my first movie ...TY :D :D :D
STICKY!!!! :O

Glad I could help :aok

and i made a film but when i drag music in music/audio section or try to import it it says i cant do that with that mp3 or i am not cleared to do it why? any info is apreciated

Fraps is a video recording program that takes the aces high film and transfers it into the correct format in order to be played in windows movie maker.
You need fraps or some other type of AVI converter program.
I recomened FRAPS for to anyone it is a EXTREAMLY easy program to use. Fraps wont necessarily give you that many option all fraps is for is to record a selected clip from aces high and transfer it into AVI format allowing it to be used in movie make.
The ONLY difference between free fraps and payed for fraps is that on the top of your final draft using free fraps you will see in small white letters http://www.fraps.com. When you use the paid for fraps it hides that. Free fraps wont mess up any kind of sound/audio stuff.

here is what i do since not all of my music is not mp3 type to import it into movie maker.
First go My computer-->documents-->my music--> select what ever song you want to use and drag or import it into I tunes or any other music playing program. Once the music is in the program right click on it and hit copy. Paste the song onto the desktop. Next DRAG the song from your desktop into movie maker and it will put it in there. NOTE when you drag it your first time and it dosn't work try a few more times it dosn't always work first try

Vanwoo I think i get what your saying once the film is done in movie maker how do you save it so it can be viewed in like media player? In movie maker click the task button and on the left side a list will come up click on save film to my computer. then you can watch it in other programs.

Also when your saving to your computer it will walk you threw it in movie maker.

Thanks to you husky, I've finally made my first movie....but what's a good hosting site that won't screw up the quality like youtube? that's all I need to know right now, then I can post my video for the collective scrutiny of the AH community
-
Well if the film is under 25mb http://www.speedyshare.com is a great hosting site that dosn't mess with quality if its over 25mb just go to Google and type free file hosting sites and something is bound to show up.:aok
-
BTW Mako your welcome! like I said I really enjoy doing this kinda stuff for people.
Ill be making a write up soon on how to take screenies from the aces high film viewer and how to use film view a lil more in detail!
-
cool...I went ahead and used the site Wooly uses.

Ok i have been able to make movies using the avi function in the AH film viewer. I tried doing the fraps one and the movie turned out to be 4 minutes long and when i try to save it to my computer it tells me that there isn't enough memory. Well the estimated size is 27MB and i have 44GB of free space. When i change the type of format i save it under, it sometimes says that there wasn't enough memory to allocate to the FRAPS codec. Any solutions?
-
Well i came up with an unfortunate solution. I am going to have to make the movie into a two parter, we'll see how it turns out.
-
Thats is really wired never heard of this problem Im guess splitting it i 2 parts is the only thing i could think of man sorry I cant help you out more.:(
-
Husky, when I watch the fraps clip it is jerky. Great sound, but hard to edit. Any suggestions. maybe different frame rates, what?
-
Make sure the sync square in the fraps program is clicked and that while running fraps due to it being such a larger program that everything you don't need is turned off in the background including all processors you don't need.
-
Surly you mean processes?

I wouldn't ever record sound with Fraps. I use it to capture video only. If I want sound I'll use Sound Forge or something else to capture it.
-
Tinman is right if you want to add basic sound to your film you better off doing it manually thent when you use fraps
-
Thanx Husky, turning off film viewer was the trick. It looks real cool and will have it on here real soon:aok
-
Glad that I could help!:aok

I am really interested in all of this, and have a question. How do you zoom in for a closeup of a plane without getting the gross distortion that Aces High zoom gives you, such as greatly oversized or elongated wings, etc? That has ruined every attempt I have done to make a good film.
A lot of great flight sim combat films have overcome this problem (Warbirds and IL2 for example), but only a few of them are in Aces High. Do I need some other software, such as Adobe Premier, to do it?
Thanks in advance for help.
-
I to have had the same problem. One of the things that can you can do to help is when your recoding from aces high film viewer make sure the aces high film viewer is in full screen that will make the planes more symmetrical. In some ways, it wont 100% but it will help.
-
Or....
Just press the 'Z' key.
-
cc Husky01, that does help a little. I am going to try a FRAPS film clip in Adobe Premier, and use that to crop and zoom in. Detail may suffer a bit but it should work.
TinmanX, pressing the Z key when in Film Viewer (External View) and then zooming in gives as much distortion as it does in external view offline. If Aces High could just fix that one problem, it would help a lot of guys to make great films!
-
I have to say that I have never experienced that. Perhaps you could post some screenshots as an example?
-
Ok here ya go Tinman.
Notice that in picture 1 when the aces high film view isnt not at full screen how the nose of teh ME-262 looks extremely elongated.
(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/5636/distortion2pr7.th.png) (http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=distortion2pr7.png)
Now when we make film viewer full size notice how it does not fix the problem 100% but it does make it alot better.

Well, here's how it loosk on my screen. I've tried to re-create the same shot you used for comparison;
Film Viewer shots;
No Z pressed;

As you can see, I am not having the issues that you are having with scale. It's almost as if your screen resolution settings are set to 16:9 but your film viewer is still displaying in 4:3.
-
Thats cause my window isnt not opened all the way im not talking the whole screen being a picture im talking about the whole screen being the aces high film viewer program. I was stating that if you do it that way it will make things look distorted.
-
Nice skin there Tinman :D .
Der Galland Zirkus.
Herr Galland himself.
-
Still not really getting any scale issue;

While you can't use most functions while being full screen, you can still adjust your own views:
F1 is default view, F3 external, F4 chase, F5 fixed.
Hit F8 to enter Pan mode (move view and head position freely with number keys on number pad, PgUp/PgDwn and arrow keys.
But best thing for a longer, better edited film using fraps would be splitting up the filming into several "shots", just like real world cameraman have to do. Switch planes and setup views while action is paused, then start film again, enter full-screen mode and record with fraps.
For another shot at different angles, exit full screen mode, set up again, etc.
For utilizing the"film shots" feature of Ah2's film viewer itself, take a look at http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=213301
