Anyone around the AH community hear about the gunman loose on the Virginia Tech campus this morning?
My dorm is right beside the dorm where one of the shootings took place this morning.
-
UPDATE: 1 death, 1 injury
-
You will be fine Lancer.. I mean who would want to shoot a Wal-mart greeter?? Not me that is for sure.
-Sp0t
-
i know im fine i was just seeing who all had heard about it.
i mean, im two buildings over from where it happened so im stuck in a classroom.
-

Post in bad taste.
Apologies
-
Yeah Curval, you're pretty freaking funny...but then looks aren't
everything.
-
There saying 20 dead with gunmen dead also
-
5 minutes ago it was 1 dead, 27 wounded. Now they are saying 22 dead!
Very sad. :(
-
Fox is reporting 22 dead and 21 wounded. Is this knuckle head just running around shoot ppl or is he sniping them??
-
Fox just reported that the gunman is dead. AP is saying 22 dead and the police are saying 20 dead.
-Sp0t
-
From the article I read it sounds like more than one shooter. Apparently it started in two opposite ends of the campus. 20 dead? My goodness, what a freaking tragedy.
-
Wow. They are now saying that this guy was looking for his girlfriend. That he lined some students up and executed them one by one. If this is true it will account for the high death count. Very sad.
-
Consensus is currently saying 1 dead, 20 injured, based on a quick look through the news outlets (aggregated via Google):
http://news.google.com/?ncl=1115426346&hl=en
-
as the news and what has been told to me by professors and authorities on campus is that it started at 7:30 at West Ambler Johnston, with 1 confirmed fatality.
2hours later at approx 10am the second shooting occured in Norris Hall, which is an engineering building containing classrooms, where aparently the gunman opened fire on a classroom full of students.
-
Yea, this one is saying 21 dead:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070416/ap_on_re_us/virginia_tech_shooting
Looks like it WAS just one shooter.
-
Have you been released yet Lancer?
-
yeah, i was released around 12 and went back to my room
-
terrible tragedy. :(
I suspect the anti-gun people are busily drafting more gun control laws as I type citing this specific incident.
-
It also appears that the shooter was looking for his gf when he entered Norris hall.
-
The Police are saying at least 20 deaths. And one gunman. This is sad. 20 deaths are bad. But when most of them are kids..that is really sad. My prayers go out to the families that are about to get some bad news. :(
-Sp0t
-
It is now being reported the gunman, while looking for his gf, lined up students and executed them
-
If he was looking for his girl friend, why did he feel the need to shoot other people? :(

Same thing I thought.
-
Glad to hear you're OK Lancer. My son is a VT senior and it took until around noon to hear anything from him. His girlfriend is an engineering student so we were pretty concerned about that too since most of her classes are in Norris but both her and my son are just fine.
-
This is an absolutely horrific situation. The accounts coming out are saying that the kids were lined up and executed. It just seems so much more brutal that way. One moment you have kids learning and studying, trying to carve a bright future for themselves with education, the next they are just lifeless meat and bones. Awful.
The guy that performed this disgusting act had to be a clinical psychopath in my opinion.

glad to hear they are ok.

Lancer, I neglected to mention before that I am glad to hear that you are ok. I hope that none of your friends were caught up in this tragedy.

Tragic doesnt begin to describe it :(
Sympathies to those close to anyone involved.

Heres some cell phone video of police officers staging, then rushing in when they hear the gunshots going off.

watching the Va tech news conference, given the time line it looks like the school administration and campus police dropped the ball.
they thought the first shootings were a isolated incident and did not secure the whole campus.

Coulda swore that was what I was saying? :)
Don't think you've ever gotten me before Skuzzy. Do I get a badge to wear or something? :)
Bottom line is, I know some folks are going to have police and chaplains at their door today to tell them that thier, up til now, alive and vibrant children are dead. My heart breaks for them having been down that particular road already.:(

As a college student myself, I extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their families. Be strong VT.

39 dead, 29 wounded
-
W-T-F...
No assualt rifles were used there... He killed 39 with just 9mm semi-auto pistol.
-
The CAMPUS NEWSPAPER reported two 9mm handguns. That HAS NOT been confirmed, by ANYONE. Witnesses stated he had a vest with several magazines (actually they said "clips"). Witnesses stated they saw ammunition BELTS. Right now they don't know who the guy was, and they haven't confirmed identification of any weapons. So any assumptions are just that, assumptions. Why don't we WAIT and get some FACTS, before anyone rushes to judgment?
If you're the ONLY person armed, all you need is for your victims to be paralyzed with fear, and to have ammunition. IF he had two 9mm handguns and several 12-15 round magazines, he wouldn't need a rifle of any sort. Besides, I doubt he had access to a select fire full auto military rifle.
-
lancer u still there? my condolences to ur losses
-
In a CNN interview with a freshman girl who survived one of the classrooms attacked, she said he was a young Asian man, wearing "boy scout" type clothing and had one handgun. He stuck his head in the door on two occasions before finally entering the room and began firing. He left only to return less than a minute later and continued firing. The girl being interviewed suspected he heard survivors talking. They were eventually able to block the door, but he tried to get back in three more times before randomly firing through the door. Of the 25 people in the class, 4 were able to walk out under their own power.
I simply can't imagine what the surviving students from those classes are going through. I hope they have a strong support system around them.

Please let's not start this
dropping the ball" nonsense, the press is already ignoring the guy who did it and are going after the administration like a pack of ignorant bombastic wolves. Jeeze, it would be nice to have some facts before the lynching begins but I guess it's not really necessary.

I was working IN Blacksburg this am...had no squealing idea what all the sirens were about... info started filtering in slowly as customers went in and out
-
Hi, sorry to just poke my head in and make a few quick comments.
A friend of mine Pastors a church in Blacksburg and the campus minister (also in my denomination) is a friend of his. He's asking the Christian community for prayer as they do all they can to help the community. None of the members of his church were killed, although the killer fired shots through the door into the classroom of a teacher in the congregation. Apparently she had the presence of mind to ask students to lock and barricade the door when they heard shooting in the building.
BTW- AP is reporting that the killer was a Chinese man from Shanghai who arrived in the US on August 7, 2006 on a student Visa. No ID released yet.

It's good to hear that family and friends of Mace and LancerVT are fine. As a Virginia Tech alumni, I hate to think the school will be noted for this and not as one of the finest engineering schools in the country.
I hope cooler heads prevail in this thread, and we don't lower ourselves to be like the media and talking heads who earn their living exploiting tragedies for profit or an agenda. In a world of 6.5 billion people and growing, we can only have a growing number of loose cannons
-
God bless you lancer, I will be praying tomorrow. Tell me when the vigil is (im pretty sure there will be one right?)
-
We can only pray or commiserate for those who are forever affected by this desperate and grievous act. A reminder that no one is guaranteed tomorrow.
-
amen
-
Yes there will be a vigil tomorrow night at 8pm on the drill field i believe.
Thank you all for your prayers
-
Thank you sir and i will be sure to put you and all those families who mourn or are yet to hear the tragic new's in my school's special intentions
-
Just got the following email from my friend in Blacksburg:
Thank you everyone for praying. I am receiving emails and phone calls
from all over the country -- some from people I know, many others from
those I do not, telling us of their prayers. Thank you.
We still don't know all the names of the dead or the wounded. So far,
everyone in my own congregation who worked in the building where most of
the killings occured has been accounted for, but they of course know some
of those who died. What my brother wrote was accurate -- one of my
members saved the life of her classroom by spotting the murderer approach
and closing the door quickly. Her students then blockaded the door and
he eventually went elsewhere.
In truth, we are all still numb here and not quite sure what to say or
do, other than to run again to the Gospel. Our church hosted a
multi-church prayer service tonight at 7 PM, which I got around to
planning around 6:15 pm due to the busyness of the day. There is a
photo of it on the Foxnews website right now (10:30 pm). It filled up
with pray-ers by the end of the hour, and the Lord blessed our time
together with His presence. The media showed up as well, uninvited, but
respectful.
We still don't know where to go from here. Pray for the Lord to give us
guidance and courage, particularly to JR Foster, our RUF minister, who
just endured the loss of his friend, Dustin Salter. JR got a chance to
be interviewed on secular talk radio today, and made the Gospel very
clear in his time on the air.
When Katrina hit two years ago, we didn't know what to do either, so we
gathered to pray, and out of that flowed thousands of dollars, four
different relief trips, and the "loss" of a deacon to the effort down
there. Well, we just prayed about this, and now we need the Lord to show
us who to minister to and how. Pray for us, brothers, and for the
victim's families.

personally, I do not care how the media handles it... they are all dregs anyways.
If it truly was a Chinese National, then I hope the one that offered up weapons to this individual (assuming they are not stolen or black market) faces every level of hell the government can bring down.

Evidently a 9mm handgun and a 22 caliber handgun. At this point, nothing has been said as to how he acquired either of them.
-

not exactly sure, thought I heard it was a semi-aute assault rifle. How did he get it? Probably the same way most criminals get their guns, the black market.
-
They showed the weapons last night on the local news channel here in Virginia Beach. Looked like a Glock 9mm and the other looked like a Browning Hi Power 9mm. Last thing I heard was the serial numbers had been filed off them so more than likely they were stolen and he picked them up off the street somewhere.
I know many will want to use this as an excuse for tougher gun laws but I won't go into that here.
I'm just glad that people I know that attend that school are OK. Couple of the guys I work with have kids up there, and they are all fine.
Sad and tragic event, but these things do and will continue to happen when people are willing to turn over their security and personal safety to others to be protected. Even though that might sound a bit harsh right now, my heart does go out to the victims and their families.
-
Evidently one weapon, the 9mm, was a Glock, and the shooter had a receipt for it. Don't know what the other weapon was by make and model. I'm not sure, but I think a resident alien, legally in the country in good standing, is allowed to own firearms.

I'm sure you are all aware by now, but the police released the identity of the killer this morning, he was a Korean here on a green card.
Police identified the classroom shooter as Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior from South Korea who was in the English department at Virginia Tech and lived in a different dorm on campus. Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and there was no indication Tuesday of any possible motive.
Just a quick request, I don't think that around here we are going to be able to stop all attacks on Glocks or the ability to purchase them, however from the bottom of my heart I'd ask we not have ridiculously broad slamming sessions on South Korean immigrants. My wife and I spent some of the best years of our lives as part of a mostly Korean church in Philadelphia, and I've worked with first and second gen South Koreans for the last ten years. The actions of this VT senior were in no way a reflection of his ethnicity any more than they are a reflection of English Majors. His actions were in fact simply a product of the murderous evil of his own heart.
As such it could have been a student of virtually any nationality that did the shooting including, as Columbine showed us, average white American kids, and is not therefore any kind of argument for limiting South Korean immigration or even for limiting the ability of Permanent Residents to purchase firearms - that is unless you think that countless Korean shopkeepers in fringe neighborhoods and of course yours truly should be compelled to disarm.

Jeeze, I wonder what caused this dude to snap. Girls cheat on guys all the time. Why did he go on a rampage this time? I wonder if he had a history of violence, abuse? Or was he truely a clinical psychopath, incapable of feeling empathy for others. Maybe he was a secondary psychopath, so absorbed by his own negative emotions that he felt he needed to kill people then himself.
This shooting has alot of unanswered questions.

Apparently, this is another topic which cannot be discussed without being trolled. There are already multple active discussions about gun controls in this forum. There does not need to be another one.
