Anyone living in Michiana? I am flying out on Monday for a job interview. Seriously considering relocating. The job is in Middlebury, near Goshen and Elkhart. Tell me your thoughts on the area.
-
I dislike indiana. I find it industrialised and depressing. Its also very cold in the winter (expect less than 50 degree temperatures for six months out of the year).
-
funny, i never heard from anyone about Indiana as good place to live

If you stay inside most of the time. Work, live and recreate indoors. Then it won't matter much.
Since I like mountains and motorcycles, nothing between the Appalachian foothills and the Front Range would work for me.
Try the links under this site for help - especially for demographics. Also, look to see it the town/area you would be moving to is "wired". When I was looking at Colorado Springs, about anything I was curious about could be found online, including a weekly map of crime to allow me to determine which neighborhoods were better or worse.

Elkhart? That's the birthplace of the Travel Trailers/Campers I believe. They have my camper in a museum there. (2nd picture down)

I've lived in southern Indiana most of my life and I like it very much.
You have 4 seasons and guess what? It's cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
I don't spend a lot of time in the northern part but like any place that is near a big city you get a lot of crime.
Elkhart is not far from South Bend/Mishawaka (15 miles) which is not far from Chicago (93 miles). Middlebury is about 127 miles from Chicago.
Up in that area you are going to get a lot of snow in the winter.

Here are a few stats.

Never met anyone who moved to elkhart IN, they always seem to be moving away from elkhart...

Northern IN isn't that bad, it's just not that good either. You can tell the 4 seasons apart pretty easily. Used to live in Ft Wayne, drove to South Bend and Chicago alot, seemed a bit sparse up there by comparison to the Indy or Ft Wayne areas. Think the southern part of the state is a bit more appealing, but opinions vary.

Southern Indiana was a wonderful place to grow up. A lot like the TV series Happy Days. Of course that was in the '40s to '60s, and yeah, things maybe were different then. Every generation has its own unique features.
After being transplanted , I must admit I prefer Virginia's milder temperatures, bluer skies, rollier terrain, and fewer tornado scares.
I've always been proud to be a native Hoosier -- some of the nicest, most forthright people you'll ever meet anywhere. If that's boastful, we deserve every word of it. :D

I grew up in Northwest Indiana, now live in Minnesota, no hurry to ever move back. Still go back to visit family. That is the area where Gary, East Chicago is.
Elkhart is a nice place, I have a cousin living there, he likes it alot.
Indiana is a nice state overall, but not too exciting.
-
Dago, I didn't know you lived in Minnesota? Where you at?
I grew up in Coon Rapids, and Forest Lake (Born in Cloquet).
I'll be back there in June for some fishing wit da father who still resides in Hugo.
-
Midnight, if you're from California, you'll hate Indiana.
-
Not really looking for excitement. A simpler slower lifestyle sounds kind-of appealing right now.

Perhaps... (http://www.retirementhomes.com/North_America/USA/Rhode_Island/West_Kingston/Retirement_Homes/Senior_Living/Shady_Acres_Inc.htm) :p

Why?
I lived in the mountains here for years. I have seen and driven in plenty of snow. I don't go to the beach much any more, and California is turning into a giant traffic jam.

My roommate at Adrian College grew up near Oneka Lake(?), and was always talking about "the fishing on that lake".

If you want slower and laid back, IN might be just what you're looking for. Probably also obscenely cheap compared to the left coast.

Key word is bold above. Which equals "beauty". Indiana is flatter than a 90 year old ho and "beauty" lasts for 2 weeks in the midwest, during the fall colors.

True.
Just as a comparison if you make an income of $50,000 near LA/Longbeach area in CA, you can live the same lifestyle with an equivalent income of $29,889.50. You can take a 40.22% decrease and still maintain your standard of living.
However, if Midnight moved to Indiana, he might start leaning right and join the NRA

yep, all the poutine and beer obscure the thinking. best to keep at least 10 miles of water between you and it at all times.

Elkhart and the surrounding area is very pretty in the Summer time. It has nice farm land, lots of trees, some very nice people, including the Amish and their buggy's on the roadway. Most definitely a change in lifestyle from where you are now MT. On one hand it's the center of the RV world with multiple factories and related business's surrounding it. If RV's suddenly lost market share, I'm sure Elkhart and the area would dry up and blow away. There are some other industry related to the automotive sector but with all the cutbacks going on I don't know if that will be a good job security market
It is in the immediate area for that thing called lake effect snow. The winter is very cold and long. Look at the weather there for the last couple weeks. If this is OK with you the move might be very pleasant.
FWIW I've been there 3 times and it was one of the places that seemed to go out of their way to make us feel at home. I enjoy being there, but ONLY in the Summer. ;)
