Title: Hopelessly fatal exceptions
Post by: artoo on January 14, 2000, 01:38:00 PM
I can't stay in the game because I keep getting blown out with blue screens o' death that report fatal exceptions. Typically, they report conflict problems caused by vxd, dsound, emu10k1, etc.  As these are sound drivers, I've spent several hours over the last couple of weeks with tech support at creative labs thinking the problem is my soundblaster 512PCI sound card.  They have tried to help and I've gone nuts uninstalling and reinstalling cards, drivers, etc., but I still have the same problem.  Sometimes I crash right away, sometimes I can get 15-20 minutes.  A few times I completed a flight but got the crash upon exiting.  Each time, I end up having to turn the machine completely off and rebooting it.  A warm boot will make me crash the machine before I can even get into the game.

This only happens when I am running AH, and it has happened both running online and offline.  Nothing has worked, and as it stands now unless I can get this worked out I'm not going to be able to continue with the game.

My system:
Pentium II 350
64mg RAM
soundblaster 512PCI
Voodoo3 2000
dsl line
I'm running dx7a and the latest drivers on my cards

Artoo,
My system is "almost" identical to yours, and I'm not having any blue screen problems.

I'm writing this maybe to help you narrow done the glitches...It sounds like it could be the soundblaster...my computer specs are.

PII 350
128 RAM
AOpen 1815 game card
Voodoo3 2000
Cable Modem
Running dx7

I hope it helps to narrow done the glitch and get you back in the air!

Sorry, I can't help out anymore, my computer knowledge is rather limited.

Looks like a hardware problem to mee artoo.

It's only hardware or drivers can regularly bluescreen you like that.

Since you've done the driver thing, it sounds like hardware.  How hot is your rig?  Try it with the cover off and a fan on it if you can.

Have you tried a different sound card and different PCI slots?  If so, does your mainboard have onboard sound that might cause a confict?  Are you certain you have no resource conflicts?  Failing that it could be your mainboard or RAM, but it's less likely given the error messages you are seeing.

Try turning agp support off in the direct x setup.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.  It looks like the problem was that my computer HATED my new $90 soundblaser PCI512 card.  On the other hand, it seems to like my old cheapo $19 soundcard just fine.  I reinstalled the knockoff and just put in 2 hours flying time with nooo problem.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

What a relief.  Thanks for helping.
