Title: Random lockup with sound looping..
Post by: SunKing on April 19, 2007, 11:55:13 PM
I haven't had this issue since the week the ME-262 patch was introduced when a ton of people had the same symptoms.

I'll be playing fine. FPS maxed at 85 AA and AS cranked and the game looks awesome and plays flawless. Then suddenly , at any given time the game locks up and the sound playing at the moment loops indefinitely forcing me to reboot the computer.

My system specs are..

AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Toledo 2.6GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K - Retail

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Antec TruePower TrueControl 550 550W ATX12 Power Supply Retail

(2) Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JD 200GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer

Sound Blaster X-Fi™ XtremeMusic

GeForce 7800 GT   running 93.71 ForceWare Drivers.

ChProducts  USB Fighterstick
ChProducts USB Pro Pedals
ChProducts USB throttle
Trackir 4Pro

Where do I start trying to trouble shoot this when every other game runs flawless but my AH2 lockups?

Any help is appreciated because I'm lost, and want to play.

That FX-60 (2.6ghz)is running at 2.8 ghz according to your dxdiag report. Are you overclocking ? AH will crash overclocks faster than most any other games ive played. If your not overclocking , there is a problem in the bios somewhere or a program is turning up the cpu without u knowing , some cpu's dont like to be overclocked at all , that would cause the exact symthoms your having , GL

sound loop is too much excelleration in windows,  try turning it down a notch .

or it can be a irq problem if its sharing the wrong one .

most of my overclock blunders cause the OS to crash / or windows to boot crash.

Sounds like exactly the same symptom I had.

Try killing the process rather then rebooting. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the process manager (if you can't see it make sure you only have AH running). Hit Alt-E to end the application, hit E (or Alt-E) to say yes to killing the application. (Do it all even if you can't see any dialouges).
(To get it right you can practice with a non-crashed AH.)

Wait to see if AH dies and the desktop is restored.

This worked for me most of the time.

In my case switching from 60 FPS limit to Unlimited fixed the problem, but I still seem to get 60 FPS max (I know the CPU/Card can do much more).. It's all a bit strange, but try mucking with the FPS limit settings to see if you can get a stable program.

Airhog if you are running with v-sync on and your monitor is set to 60hz refresh rate the max you will ever see is 60 fps.

My first thought SunKing is overheating...   Is the fan controllable for the vid card?  See if you can turn it up perhaps.

I see a couple of potential issues.  I assume you have already applied the patch from AMD for the dual core problms?

The 9x.xx drivers from NVidia have some issues as well.

But, to test the theory, set Aces High II to run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode.  Right-click on the startup ICON, select "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab.

This forces the game to run on once CPU.  This will get around some of the problems with the 9x.xx NVidia drivers as well.

It could also be heat.  Checking the CPU and Video card tempertures in real-time might help show if that is an issue or not.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I don't have v-sync set, but I'll check it again. Not that 60 fps isn't enough..

I didn't set the CPU to be overclocked. I thought it was running at it's default speeds. I'll check bios again.

Ctrl-Alt-Del  doesn't work for me when AH2 locks.  I always run the FPS at unlimited and Vsynch on. Average 85 fp maxing out at 1600/1200 settings per my monitor.

I've never applied an AMD patch.

I checked my temps the 1st time I had this issue. I run Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7.0 and all the temps are fine and my fan rpms are consistant too.

Should I be using a certian version of Nvidia drivers?

Is this the patch I want to install?

"AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16 "

found here (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html)

Thanks for the help people.

The task manager may well be started even if you can't see it.
Did you try what I suggested?

Yes. I've tried alt-f4 and contrl/alt/delete methods to get out of the game. They never work after the lockup hits, only before. It can sit for an hour and never lets me kill the game. I do see the task manager minmized at the bottom but I can get to it with any method.

I already run the game on unlimited fps.
I've never run the game locked at 60 fps.

The dual-core optimizer patch corrects some issues with the clocks Aces High II depends on.

But, if you do not have it installed, there is normally side effects, like the spinning clipboard flap.

Hmmm.  Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers/INF files?  I see a lot of standard Windows drivers being used, but the list is cutoff.

I do get that spinning clipboard all the time. I just reload the game till it goes away.

I'll repost the dxdiag when I get home.

I did install the mobo chipset and drivers right after the o/s installed. Got them off the DFI sight because the cd was outdated.

Can I go back and reload the chipset drivers now? or is it to late? ( I've always heard you have to install thoughs minutes after XP is installed).

No no.  If you are sure you loaded the chipset drivers, do not try to re-install them.  Many of the drivers installed after the motherboard drivers depend on various settings in the registry.  Re-installing the chipset drivers could cause changes in those settings and effect the rest of the drivers.

If you are getting the spinning clipboard, then install  the AMD patch and all your problems, including lockups, will probably cease.

Two minor things I saw were:
1) Sound acceleration " HW Accel Level: Full" It should be 3/4 maximum.
2) "Monitor: Default Monitor"  That should list your specific monitor.

We know the effects of the first one but the specifics of the second Skuzzy would have to chime in. I know it should display the actual monitor name though if you installed the specific driver for it.

That's odd , in my video card settings I do have the correct drivers for each of my monitors installed correctly and the names of each model are listed. I have them running at the correct res and refresh rates.

I'm having the exact same problem. I have to reboot each time.

The screen freezes or goes black and the sound loops intermittently. This usually occurs 30 to 40 minutes into the game.

My Specs:
Motherboard - ASUS P5W Deluxe
Processor –  Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe
Video – ATI  X1900TX 512mb
Power Supply – ANTEC/NEOHE 550W
Audio – Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Memory – Kingston 2 GB 800mhz DDR2
OS – XP Pro with SP2
Flight Controls – Saitek X52/CH Pro Pedals

I'm using the original drivers. I have installed the Dual Core patch. The problem appeared a few weeks after I installed the Sound Blaster Card. On board sound is disabled. Both video and audio cards have their own IRQ's. I did a DxDiagnostic and no problem appeared. I'm not sure how much of it you need to see, but this is the first half of it.

I remember reading problem with the nforce4 chipset and X-Fi cards that produced 'crackling sounds.'  But that does not seem to be the problem here.

Pulled this off the Creative website.

"We have observed through direct observation of the PCI bus on the nVidia nForce 4 motherboards that when the crackle symptoms are occuring, the Soundblaster X-Fi card PCI bus master memory requests for audio data are being held off (not serviced) for very long intervals.

We have observed peak holdoffs of up to 2 milliseconds in some cases. This is unusual chipset behavior that is beyond the ability of a hardware audio accelerator to compensate for in its internal buffering. The SoundBlaster X-Fi tolerance for these PCI holdoffs is approximately 120 microseconds peak holdoff, with a 1 microsecond average holdoff.

These design tolerances are based on observation of real PCI bus behavior on leading motherboards over a period of many motherboard hardware generations.

The nForce 4 motherboard is the first motherboard on which these extremely long PCI service holdoffs have been observed by Creative, where another PCI device in the system was not causing the holdoff."

Skuzzy thank for your quick reply.

I removed the "Modem #0" sound device. Rebooted and fired up the game. The game crashed after 30 minutes, but this time I got a "host lost connection error" from the game but no sound loop. In addition I received an ATI error message: "VPU recover has reset your graphics as it was no longer responding to driver command". Remembering your disdain for the ATI Catalyst Control Center, I removed it; reinstalled the stock video drivers; rebooted and started the game back up. The game crashed again as it did prior to removing "Modem #0 sound device, with a screen/computer freeze and looping sound.

I'd be grateful for any additional advice.

WxMan, can I assumed you installed this? (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C2AB5A48-8240-4934-BBD8-34FB8A0FCE3B&displaylang=en)

I noted the olde driver you are running with the X1900.  You might as well go ahed and use the latest driver from ATi as all the drivers that support you video card use the CCC (Catalyst Control Center).

Yes, I've installed all of the components. This is a home built system

The windows patch was installed 4/24/07.

I will try new drivers.

What make and model power supply are you using?  Have you checked the rail levels in the BIOS?  What is the CPU temp when the game crashes?

Power Supply – ANTEC/NEOHE 550W

Although the computer usually locks up after a crash, when I bring it back up CPU is near 31 degrees and system temp is about 38.

I am unsure of what to check for in the BIOS for rail levels.

In the hardware monitor, it shows the voltage levels of the various rails (3V, 5V, 12V...).  That power supply is a bit on the small side.  Due to the new way power supplies are being rated (marketing strikes again), the power rating of 550W is more like a 420W in reality.

The power supply cannot actually provide that capacity if all rails need it.  Yjr olf Antec Trupower 480W supply actually supplied more power than that 550W supply does.

The voltage levels from the hardware monitor:

Vcore  1.296V
3.3 Voltage  3.264
5.0 Voltage  5.094
12.0 Voltage 12.091

Those look pretty good, but consider those are at idle.  It was a shot in the dark.  Sometimes they reflect something wrong even when the computer is idle.

I am still leaning towards power supply or heat as the possible issue.

I installed the newest ATI Drivers yesterday. That seemed to have solved the lock up and sound loop problem. Played for several hours last night without the problem.

However, the ATI drivers somehow pooched the sound. The sound was fuzzy and vox was extremely low and broken. Removed the drivers for the sound card and installed new Sound Blaster drivers. That cleared up both the sound and the vox. Except now I'm getting vertical artifacts especially when around smoke and radar towers.

Well at least I can play the game now.

Thanks Skuzzy.

Sounds like your sound card and video card are sharing the same physical IRQ.  Not good.

That would explain the hard locks.

Post by: WxMan on December 01, 2007, 04:26:34 PM
As I stated in my first post Skuzzy they did not before and after the driver reinstall they still don't. The IRQ for the Video card is 16 and 22 for the sound card.

The sound card does not share an IRQ, however the Video Card does.

(PCI) 16  Intel(R) 82801G(ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root Port 27D0
(PCI) 16  Intel(R) 82801GR/GH(ICH7 Family) PCI Express Root Port 27E0
(PCI) 16  Intel(R) 975X PCI Express Root Port 277D

Should I try moving the video card to the other PCI Express slot?
