Title: WW2 PAcific Shermans
Post by: BiGBMAW on April 20, 2007, 07:33:12 PM
A good friend Don was a field commissioned officer in the pacific during WW2.  He tells some amazing stuff..HAs original battle map of his time on Iwo Jima...has many many "gifts " he brought back from the island campaigns..

I need some  books to read about tankers times in WW2 PAcific specifically..

Any suggestions..

Thank you

You'll probably have to just find books on Iwo, Okinawa and Tarawa to start.

There was a Sherman on Tarawa called "Colorado" if memory serves that was something of a legend as it was the only tank working for much of the battle, with the other Shermans water logged or knocked out.  It was fairly instrumental in the taking of the airstrip.

The Shermans on Iwo took some serious hits from artillary and struggled in the volcanic ash, but again as time wore on played a big part.

There was very little tank to tank stuff as the Sherman in the Pacific was to the Japanese tanks, like the Tiger in the ETO was to the Sherman.  It was really no contest most of the time.

I know they were on the Canal too.

I'm at work so I don't have titles in authors in front of me.  The only one I can name right now is "Iwo" by Richard Wheeler.

I believe that one of the only tank battles in the PTO took place on Saipan.

You mean tank vs tank?

I'm reading "Cutthroats: The Adventures of a Sherman Tank Driver in the Pacific" by Robert C. Dick.  Good read:aok
