Title: So what will they ban next huh??
Post by: Hornet33 on April 23, 2007, 06:17:04 PM
NEW YORK - Metal bats will be banned in high school baseball starting this September in the nation's largest school system after the City Council on Monday overrode a mayoral veto of the bill.

The measure outlaws metal bats under the theory that they produce harder and faster hits, risking injury to young players who have less time to react. Opponents, who include Little League Baseball and sporting goods makers, say there is no evidence metal bats are more dangerous.

Youth leagues and lawmakers are proposing similar bans in other areas, including New Jersey, where a 12-year-old boy went into cardiac arrest and suffered serious injuries after a batted ball struck him in the chest.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg vetoed the bat ban earlier this month, saying the issue should be left up to those who run the youth leagues, not the government. But the City Council overwhelmingly knocked down the veto by a vote of 41-4.

"What we're trying to do is reduce risk," said Councilmember James Oddo, the sponsor of the bill.

Opponents argue that there is no scientific evidence proving metal bats pose a greater danger than wooden bats, and that the anti-metal movement relies on emotional anecdotes over concrete data. Some have said they plan to challenge the matter in court.

In 2005, an American Legion Baseball study found no substantial scientific proof to support the argument that wooden bats are safer than metal bats.

What they are trying to do is reduce risk?????????? I don't care who you are, you get thumped in the chest with a baseball hit by ANY batter with a decent swing your heart is going to take a beating.

GOD these people are idiots!!!!!!!!! Next you know they will BAN baseball all together. Jeez, they can't find anything else to screw with so they're going to mess with America's favorite past time now too???:furious

You'd think that the city counsil of New York would have plenty more important things on their plate than this.

Are you fluff'n kidding me?  Where I come from, if you are on a high school sports team, you are there because you were sucessful during tryout's.  I don't know whats more insane.  Banning these bats, or schools forcing competitive teams to allow chitty players on the team.

Whats next?  Flag football in texaS?

In few years they prolly start giving newborns a card which says :" Warning. Living may be hazardous and all movement may cause accidents which affect your health....blah blah blah"

Sadly this seems to be  the trend of the world nowadays.

With ya on that.
I've always been against metal bats.
Not a thing to do with safety.

Baseball was intended to be played with wooden bats, not metal ones.
"Americas favorite pass time"

The "Crack of the bat"  Old saying. almost as old as baseball itself.
Sweet special sound of a well hit ball.

On wood its a "CRACK"

On metal its a "pling" not aa "CRACK"

Metall bats are for wusses who otherwise cant hit a ball past the infeild without one

These bats should never have been allowed to be used to begin with.
they were probably intorduced to satisfy the ego..of someones father

Great point- I wonder if the 44 voters overturning the VETO thought about that, or corking.

They overlook the obvious: it's rarely the bat that injures, it's the BALL.

Clearly, they should be allowed metal bats but most definitely it's time to switch to nerf baseballs.

That should really cut down the injuries.

Oh I played 3rd base when I was a kid...I was 12 when a ground ball took a bounce on the turf and whammied me in the jaw.  I thought I broke it with all the swelling and blood.  Put some ice on it then got checked out at the ER.

Had that happened now....oh geez, I could sue the ball maker, the batter, the people who maintain the un-even turf....

I like the old days better, thank you!

Was pitching one day.
Pitched a beautiful fastball right down the pipe.
Batter hits the ball a line drive right back at my head.
Put the glove up to catch the ball
I missed.
The ball didnt.
Result.
3 chipped teeth and a pair of cut up and swollen lips tht made me look like I just kissed Godzilla.
It was literally years before I was willing to take the mound again

when i was a kid i got hit in the head with a bat during a game, passed out 1/2 hour later, i think it might have been a concussion, but in those days we only went to the doctor for something serious.

never believed in Metal bats, never have. don't believe in metal or compostite hockey sticks either

If the metal bats don't give any edge then why aren't they used in MLB.

I played competitve baseball till I was 30 and from experience metal bats are designed to outperform wood and do.

If they didn't why are all the sports stores stocked with 90% metal bats compared to wood, and don't tell me its cause wood bats break.

I could buy 3 ash bats to one good metal bat.

and in little league where the pitcher is only forty feet away, is another arguement for wood, one second means alot when it comes to reflexes.

and that is what I believe the difference between metal and wood, one second.
