In nineteen hundred and ninety eight I started using Winamp. When iTunes came to Windows (2003) I neglected my poor friend. But iTunes bloat really gets tedious, and I've begun looking at Winamp again.
So for you faithful few still using Winamp, what are some 'must have' plugins?
I'm using version 2.91...mainly because thats the last version before I moved to iTunes...and because some of my old plugins were never updated. Is the new version really better?

WinAMP 3 (v3.0d) is what I've been using for years with the MMD3 skin. I gave v5 a try when it was released only to encounter a horrid case of koad bloat. It ran slower on my 2.2 GHz machine than v3 did on my ancient 900MHz rig! Most of the skins available will work with v3. Plug-ins I'm not sure about, since I never use 'em.

I use 5.04, and no plugins or skins. There was an issue, at least for a while, with some unwantedware accompanying addons from the site. Out of general paranoia, I never used the vis plugins or any skins afterwards. (in retrospect, this was when my 466 Cel was still a perfectly good rig. It's probably safe now. :lol )
There are numerous mentions of fixing memory leaks in the 'what's new' readme that mine installed with, and I haven't had any problems with it on this rig. I figure if it works on this box, it'll work on anything.
AMD Socket A XP2400+
Asus A7N8X-X mobo
1GB Crucial PC2700 DDR
PNY Nvid 6200 AGP w/128MB ram

Winamp 3 is was good in concept; however, it was a resource hog which was later solved by winamp 5. I remember winamp 3 taking a good 20 seconds to load at times. Not sure why you have problems with 5, maybe it was patched.
Basically 3 being a resource hog is why the Winamp 2 fans found a base for their support, it was a small app and was much lighter on the load.

I use the Gom player instead.

Real Alternative, Media Player Classic. :)

Winamp lite is a great player. I use it myself.
No plugins at all. I used to like the .wav export plugin but can no longer get it to work reliably.
Things to do to reduce the coad bloat:
Check the settings and find whatever you need to:
- disable the internet browswer window (stupid POS anyway)
- disable reporting cd titles to database
- disable pulling cd titles from database
- disable any and all internet connections except streaming audio
disable all "extras".
Basically, once you trim it down to "just" a music player, it's a sweet program.

I stoped even considering winamp after the security hole it had.

There is no security hole if you shut off all that built-in-web-broswer crap.
