My monitor is old. its a Sony E540 21" Trinitron which I have always thought highly of but I been messing with it so much trying to get AH looking the way I like that I think I just broke one of the phosphors and now its tits up as far as color and brightness and contrast. I think I killed it.
So I am gonna cough up the dough for a new screen.
Superfly you mentioned the Samsung Syncmaster 244T widescreen monitor.
you said its the best looking monitor you have ever seen. Is this compared with CRT screens too? I found them priced as low as 731 dollars while the retail price was around 1400.
I am leary of LCD screens since I have always used CRT screens on my desktops and always thought the LCD screens on my laptops sucked.
thanks for any help.

wth kind of resolution would you run at that size? that's ginormous.
-
I run AH through a Sharp Aquos LCD TV... It is awesome.
-
i run ah at 1280x1024 right now...
so to be safe till i get a new vid card would probably run it at 1280 x768?
-
I run AH at 1280 x 1024 on a Radeon 9500
-
I run the game in 1920x1200, and it is the bomb. As far as the difference to a CRT... It is basically like using a plasma HDTV instead of a regular tube tv. (You can actually have it act as an HDTV) It's bright, rich in color and I love it. I have a LCD 17" at home, and it looks practically dull compared to the Syncmaster.
You'll love it.
I have a Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT at work.

sounds awsome. and thx for info Super!
any of you ah dweebs out there have the widescreen and using it to play AH? that has got to be very impressive looking playing in widescreen bet it gives a great sense of... well movieness hahah.
-
Does anyone have experience using a projector for gaming?
-
Run it at native res if you can. Anything other than native res will not look good... guaranteed
-
Widescreen looks nice, but you will lose some of your vertical viewing angle :(
I just bought a new LCD monitor, but stayed away from a widescreen. I want to use 1280x1024 while playing AH (screen ratio 5:4 instead of 16:9... or whatever it is in widescreens).
AFAIK, the DirectX allows the 90deg horizontal view and then adjusts the vertical angle according to screen ratio.... meaning less angle for widescreens.
[edit:]
However, some have used the pivot capability of their widescreens and actually gained some vertical view ;)
-
I'm running 1650x1050, and as BlauK said I lose some vertical. I can't see all of the gauges, and I have a very limited high-12 view. I can manage with it, but it's always a trade-off.
I'm still waiting for the 2-monitor support in AH.. I have a 17" 1280x1024 monitor on top of my 20" 1680x1050, and it's really great in X-Plane. I can have the gauges on one monitor and main view on the other. Or have both views as 3D views e.g. one from outside, one from inside.
-
I use 1680x1050 on a 22" widescreen
Not having any issues with views, at least that I have noticed. Once I get the TrackIr hooked up it becomes even more of a null issue...

I think its great you have time to share your opinion on monitor choices!

I use a projector with a screen about six feet wide. It's like playing at the cinema!
-
Oh yeah! I play AH in a movie theatre. Yeah, that's it.

We also have a Samsung LCD monitor for our other computer. (Not the one you mentioned, but a cheaper one . . .) While the colors are deeper and brighter, something on it just didn't look right compared to my Viewsonic CRT monitor - then I figured it out. The dot pixel size is bigger on the Samsung, so small details aren't shown as clearly. What is the dot size on the Samsung you guys are discussing?

I think it's this guy

It's quite a blast playing games on this thing! And with a 5.1 surround system the immersion is great!

I have one of these at work.... everyone does , except the interns....:) "Intern..... Campari!!!"

Anyway ... I'm damn spoiled .. my 20" CRT at home looks like crap compared to it .... strains my eyes and just makes me spoiled.... I'm going to have to get one like it at some point.... I've had this CRT since 2000. Just don't want to buy something I'll want to replace soon, and don't want to spend 6-700$ when I bought a new mobo, chip, and card not too long ago.
And frankly, I've never been impressed by most Samsung screens I've seen.... but I'm not exactly a Samsung fan :)
I'm going to buy this Dell screen, or something like it in a few months I think. Plus, Dell is American.... and has good taste in DRAM :p

If you have always played AH with a widescreen, you wont know he difference ;)
You'll only notice it if you compare it to a 5:4 ratio screen.
The width of the view is always same, only the height changes according to your screen.
-
I think the best monitor for AH would be normal 20" TFT with 1600x1200 resolution.
-
Mipo,
that would be 4:3 screen. 5:4 gives u more ;)
If I had the the money, I might go for a 22" widescreen and rotate it 90degs. Would have to test it first though.

Then you probably did not get what I meant with getting less vertical view with widescreen. Or you meant that it does not bother you to have less vertical view :)
