Title: Japanese Airplanes
Post by: Seagoon on April 26, 2007, 09:45:35 PM
Hi All,

This morning one of my kids asked me "why is this yellow?" pointing to the leading edge of the wing of a Japanese bomber. And I had to admit I didn't know. I've noticed that the leading edges of almost all Japanese planes were painted yellow, why was that?

WoW! Something I can answer =)

I just read about this and here is your answer...

So that Japanese anti-aircraft gun crews could more easily recognize friendly aircraft from the Allies. This practice also applied to fighters as well. Look at the Zero or the Frank which also have these leading edges in a bright color. There were other markings as well on the belly of the aircraft but I forget what else there was.

Hope that helps.
