Title: B-17g/ab-17g/yb-40g
Post by: Serenity on April 29, 2007, 01:38:25 AM
Alright,

I was reading the story about the old 'Blood Dragon', and thought it was a great idea! As such, ive decided to ressurect it! Ive began by practicing offline, and even online this evening, and im convinced its one of the most fun things ive done in quite some time! Im going to spend the next week developing tactics, and then im going to re-introduce it to the MA. If there are any people out there who had experience with this concept in WarBirds, any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! Also, im more of a pilot. I know the opporating limitations of the B-17G like the back of my hand. While that means I can develope great tactics for the pilot's side of this, I am a HORRIBLE gunner. This means im going to need some crack gunners to help me with their side of life. I hope to introduce my first 'Field Suppresion' mission next monday, around 2400 GMT. It will be in one of the LWMAs, probably on the Knights. However, if a different country is willing to offer me more pilots and gunners, I go where the demand is. Im just posting this in case anyone is interested, and wants to be there when I start this up. Who knows, if this goes well, it could become as famous in AH as it was in WB, and maybe, just maybe we could earn us a YB-40! If this pulls through, Ill be changing my name to:

Fighter-hunting with a B-17 would be awesome, and it does a nice turn at speed too :D

i agree with the idea, with more armument and a bit more armor it would be the best heavely defended aircraft in the game. which means more succesful bombing missions.:)

Back in the day in AW we could and did do that many times. You could have multiple players man a single plane at each gun position. A "Death Star" it was called as the guns on those were about as deadly as the ones here. What fun to have a "reverse escort" mission to finish our squad night where we'd have a friendly fighter or two along with us dragging NME fighters to our single helpless bomber only to be erased. The AW version of the B-17 turned really well and held energy surprisingly well. Lotta weight heading in one direction. There were a couple of guys that if you knew they were flyin the B-17 ya just learned to stay the heck away from. They're here too and they know who they are.:D

LOL!  The concept was born in AW not in WB.  Doc just took what he had done in the Deathstar in AW and just used that concept in WB when he moved over to that game.  Any AW'er will remember the Deathstar and how fun it was to fly in one.

I'm insanely confused what this whole "Blood Dragon tactics" thing is but I do know one thing, I HIGHLY doubt AH will introduce the AB-17G/YB-40G because first, around 20 of these were built, secondly, the USAAF dumped the idea because these bombers lacked speed once the "regular" bombers dropped their load because the YB-40 had some much ammo and extra weaponry. Note that a Single Browning M2HB .50 Caliber weighs a whopping 84 Pounds

Many years ago there was this game called Air Warrior.  In that game they had a B-17G that you could have up to 6 players crew.  These fully crewed B-17s became known as "Deathstars" and were very hard to bring down as each gun position was manned by a player.   A lot of players used to up in Deathstars and fly around looking for fights.  It had gotten so popular that AW even created a short lived arena just for the Deathstars.  When AW started its slow slide into its grave, some of the players moved on to WB and used the B-17 the same way in that game as well.

lol. I gave it the name 'YB-40G' because we dont have a YB-40 here, the G being added because the YB-40 was a modified B-17F, not a G. And I know they wont introduce it, but I can dream cant i??? lol

Response to ack-ack's post:

I do know what air warrior was but It is so vague in my mind because my dad showed me that game just a few times back in '98.

If it's a modified F, did they put in the chin-turret during modification? Couldn't they just used a regular G? (with chin turret already installed)
Or was the YB-40's chin-turret later applied to the G versions?

So was the chin-turret in the B-17G an idea from the YB-40 or the other way around?
If so, why did they modify an F instead of a G (with the chin-turret already installed)

YB-40 came before the G, so yes, the turret was taken from the YB-40. They didnt use a G because it didint exist yet.
