Im sure by now all have heard about the bridge.
While looking at it on the news and the havok with traffic it is and is going to be playing for the foreseeable future.
I had a thought.
Why not use the military to get something up in the meantime until it can be rebuilt?
Sems to me that if we were on the attack and needed that road net in working order and it had been destroyed. The military would have something up in less then a week.
So why not use them?
Seems to me it would provide a valuable training experience
-
A couple things I can think of...
1. If the military put something up, it would be a short-term structure, but
2. A permanent replacement is still needed, and the military structure would be in the way.
There would never be a good time to replace the temporary device with the permanent replacement, but the temp structure wouldn't be built to take the type of constant load, so it would have a short lifetime.

Im thinking they could use the military knowow to erect something off to the side as a detour while the old section is being replaced

Remember the difference between mechanical engineering and civil engineering:

Half the population of S.F. *should* already be required to ride the short bus.

It won't mater how fast the fix job could be done.
Cal trans is going to be the ones to fix it, so therefore it will take about 5Xs longer then even the worst contractor could do it.
-
It'd be a great idea if we weren't in a war right now, but I figure seeing as how they have so much to deal with overseas, let them spend their time in the states chasing women around and having a good time. Let some other contractor take care of this mess.

The overpass in question is not in San Francisco.

"The cost of the repairs would likely run into the tens of millions of dollars, and the state was seeking federal disaster aid, Kempton said."
I had no idea that a traffic accident qualified for federal disaster aid.

....44% of that money was borrowed from foreign investors. Spend away!

lol we are still paying money to folks who thought living below sea level and not getting insurance was a good idea. What ever happened to people being responsible for themselves. They saved money by not getting insurance...... now I pay my insurance and I insure them....
Sorry one post made me think of that ...... not trying to hijack

Hmmm they must be run like they are here in Jersey.
5 Guys to a crew
1 to work
4 to watch the one guy work
Least whenever I see roadwork being done by the state thats what I typically see

I don't understand why it should take them so long to get it fixed. It's right next to the new bridge that's being built. They already have hundreds of road workers and bridge building experts on sight with their equipment. Stop working on the new bridge for a couple of weeks and fix the damaged section of the overpass. DUH????
OH WAIT!!!!!!! It's in commiefornia so any common sense approach like that wont work. Never mind....spend more taxpayer money and drag it out for months. Yep that's what will happen.
I'm SURE Commie Queen Nancy is already trying to figure out how to blame Bush for this AND skim some money off the top of any federal aid for some bullchit feel good save the gays hackysack playground in the park program.

Hornet, does the stream-of-consciousness stuff come naturally, or do you have to work at it?

More incoherent ramblings from a 30%er. Tell me, how can California be #5 or #6 in the world economicaly if there is such a 'communist' influence as you have suggested?
Here's a revelatinn for ya, you and the rest of the 30%ers are becomming increasingly irrelevant and at the same time more idiotic in your ramblings.

Exactly
AS an example.
We had the big qauke in 89. The they had a big one is Socal a year or so later.
The freeways in Socal were done before they fixed the freeways in the bay area.
Why? Well Socal used contractors and gave a bonus of over a million bucks if he got it done before deadline. Gues who got 1 Million bucks.
Bay area used Caltrans, they finished up at a nice slow pace.
Granted this is all memory and it was a long time ago so I could be wrong on some details.
Still, I drive buy a major work site and you NEVER see more then 1 guy working. ;)
-
Oddly enough, I was flying over the bridge when it exploded when comming back from Petaluma. It was weird b/c there was a low fog over and then the flash.
Wouldn't be surprised if the Army Corps of Engineers gets involved to get a temporary fix. Years back on the east coast when a tanker blew up on I-95 in Bridgeport - they had a temp structure in about 4 days.

I'd say less than 10% of the traffic on the Bay Bridge is San Franciscans. Most of the traffic on the bridge is people coming into SF to work (Oakland/Berkeley/Livermore residents, etc). Other than a Raiders or A's game, I haven't been over to Oakland/East Bay for anything and even then, you're better off taking the BART b/c traffic is crazy around the games.

Not really, but since you ask I will say this. I have lived in commiefornia and have been out there for work more times than I can count. The elected officials out there make me sick with most of their ideas. I couldn't even move into the state as it is right now without breaking the law. Not because I'm a lawless person but because many of the things I own and many of the things I like to do are illegal in commiefornia. Also most people I've met while out there I can't stand. Why?? Because all they ever do is talk about how great it is to live there and how everyone else in this country is stupid if we don't think like they do. I feel comfortable going anyplace in this country except there. In commiefornia I'm an outsider. Not because I want to be, but because those idiots that live there make me feel that way. Having traveled all over this country and many different places around the world, commiefornia is on the top of my personal "The crappiest places to live" list.
Politically tinted glasses??? Maybe, but they are no more tinted than yours.

Not exactly sure where you were headed with that or what it was about.
But I sure would like to know rather then responding on a speculation of what you might be getting at.

It would be very easy for me to explain what I meant. However, the meaning wasn't really veiled at all, or the joke hard to understand.
So I'm going to leave you thinking about it all night.

Does Queen Bee Nancy allow the military in California now???
Maybe they can tack the cost onto the war spending bill and get the money that way..
Maybe they could be able to recruit for only non-combat postions if they built them a new bridge..
Maybe if they get their hard fought for defeat for our military there would be personell to do this job for them..
Of course they would not be allowed to bring their evil guns with them..
And would the great people of San Francisco accept help from our facist imperialist military...
Use the Military... Yea right... swim to work
My glasses are just fine not tainted at all...
-
Rebuilding such a structure takes a great deal of planning and effort, so don't expect miracles overnight.
Why, just think of the time it takes to organize the graft...

You calling our GI's "Baby killers"?
OR is there some post I missed that would validate that comment as being funny?
-
Well, it goes back to the usage of quotation marks. There are a couple of times you use them. One is that you use them to mark when someone is saying something. Another time you use them to mark when you're quoting from another source. And the third use of them is to show when you're trying to be ironic.
The gist of it was that the military, full of so called "Baby Killers" wasn't too enthusiastic to jump up and build a bridge for the people who called them that.

Just curiosity,
how many of posted above have idea about civil engineering, building highways, estacades, bridges.............
no, watching wetbaks working on concrete slab in your backyard does not count

:D I do.

and whats your expertise?
3 days and problem solved?
-
Mostly general structural engineering, including composite systems. Like Steel, reinforced concrete, so on and so forth. Mainly dealing with buildings, but we have branched out. Plus this fall I'll be taking about 7-8 credits of civil engineering classes, though I do believe they are mostly material composition and surveying oriented.

i was replying to where you said "have idea" and i make no claim whatsoever to expertise. just saying that i have some idea of whats involved...

I find it interesting that they would offer a max $5 million bonus for a job bid at $867,000.

:O *OMG the Bush administration caused the quake and dropped those spans with hidden explosive charges left over from the 9-11 attack!*
Sorry, somebody had to say that and I'm feeling particularly dumb atm
Unfortunately, the military now has to contract out the majority of their construction work in the combat environment... unlike the old days, when you had a battalion that did specifically this sort of thing... reconstruct destroyed rails and roads.
Thank the Dems for all those cutbacks and pocket lining from the contractors... who cost 5 to 10 times more than what the soldiers do, and the contractors do a crappy job at that.

I am glad they offered the bonus, you give a bonus and the job gets done fast.
The news keeps spinning it as if we are getting ripped off, but if you have driven through there since the colapse or have to drive through there on a regular basis its worth every pennie.

I dunno...up until six months ago the dems had zero power in Washington, they must work awfully fast to have issued all those pocket lining contracts.
