GeForce 8800GT, undoubtedly and uncontestedly the strongest vid card there is.

Only problem is it's a ground-breaking design, so it's got some kinks, and the drivers continue to suck for it.

For raw power, none beat it. For ease of use, Ge1790 or X1950 (both still very powerful).

I have the 8800GTS and I have to concur the drivers blow.

The 8800GTX would be faster but my current CPU can't even max out the GTS in this setup AFAIK.

For anyone that knows.. would my CPU be  a bottleneck to this card?

There isn't a cpu out there that can push the current cards their limit, so yes your cpu would be a bottleneck.

Unless of course you can overclock your CPU to 6.0Ghz+

Yep Kev is pretty much dead on with this one. I have an E6600 Dual Core Conroe with an 8800GTS with 640MB on it and that sucker is waiting on things to come for it.

At that point you just jack up all the eyecandy you can on the card, as you don't have to wait for that, heh heh heh...

what about the $2000 Quadro? i know its ment for CG, but  isnt it better?
128 cores (each equivlant to a 1.6 or 1.8Ghz processor)
would make any game run pretty sweet  eh?

Sounds like that thing would allow you to render a 3d picture of the universe with the hires texture pack in real time. :rofl

NO!!!

Quadro is designed for 3D rendering. NOT the same thing as gaming!

NOT!

It's for high-end CAD and similar 3D programs, designed to remember a lot of points and so forth, but not for displaying game engines.

Do not get it!

i didnt say anyoone should get it... just saying its a damn fine vid card, but the quadro, could thereotically make a game run (if not look) damn fine
I mean 204-230 Ghz of processing power on the card alone...
If not its the bigges bad*ss vid card for CG

To fully utilize the 8800GTX you would need a C2Quad 6800.  Tomshardware has an article on it from a couple months back.  A 6000+ would be a bottleneck for the 8800GTX, but not too much.

If you're looking to run Oblivion on max setting and like 1600x1200 resolution you'll probably run into a CPU bottleneck, but for like most games no.  Crysis is another matter which probably would cause a CPU bottleneck.

If you're playing new games and running reasonable resolutions, a GTS will serve you well.

He didn't ask for the best value, he wanted biggest/baddest.  That title goes to the 8800 Ultra even though it's badly overpriced.  It gets a 5-10% speed bump over the 8800 GTX but costs almost twice as much.

Yes you can get an 8800 GTX and overclock it to get pretty much the same performance as the 8800 ultra, and a GTS is an even better value, but out of the box the 8800 ultra is simply the fastest gaming card out there right now.

Assuming you can find one that is...  Newegg seems to have them in stock for a bit over $800.

The Ultra prices will drop soon enough.  Especially when ATI decided to stop delaying their R600 aka 2900 or whatever card.  Before 8800 were released, articles said the price range would be around $700.  They opened about $650 and quickly dropped to $600 within two weeks and you're sitting at about $550 right now mainly because there is no other card competition in that market range at the moment.

The GTS 320mb's are a good value and get a pretty good performance compared to its 640mb brother.

I have two PC's
One running an eVGA 8800 GTS ( CPU FX 5700 ) 2 GB ram ...
The nVidia drivers are pure crap !
 The other PC is running a 8800GTX ( CPU X6800 ) 4 GB ram ....
The nVidia drivers are again pure crap ....

The current nvidia  driver team is a bunch of pig-headed bastards, that refuse to listen to consumers or admit that they have created a worthless POS .

   Regards to all ....

Doesn't work that way. The architecture of the entire card is different. It's not a card meant for gaming. It doesn't process things the same way, even if it has a high clock frequency.

I've heard it is one of the best for high-end CAD and 3D stuff. Definitely a bad***, just not for gaming or normal every-day PC operations. :aok

I seem to recall some guy on newegg writing a negative review because it had poor FPS in quake or some other game. That was enough to convince me it's not meant for any type of gaming.

Somebody asked Skuzzy if a set of video cards he got from work (pulled from a drafting station or some such) would be good for games because of their raw power, and his response was something along the lines of "no."
