Title: Whats the difference?
Post by: The Fugitive on May 01, 2007, 03:23:45 PM
I just got a new LCD monitor (19" 2ms refresh, and 3000 to 1 contrast) which plays the game great. It has both the analog plug and a digital plug as does my video card. Right now I have the analog set up as thats which cable I had.

My question is, besides the obvious   whats the differences in the inputs? Is it worth it to go out a grab a cable? I run the hires pack as well as 4x AA and like I said the game looks great... saw a caterpillar crawling up the tread of a T-34 last night   :D

I have been wondering the same thing.  Looking forward, with anticipation, to the response to your question.

The DVI is digital. The trapezoidal is analog. The LCD itself is a digital device.

The video card itself is a digital device.

The analog output converts from digital to analog (on the card) and sends the signal out.

The analog in on the LCD takes analog signals and converts them to digital (on the monitor) to get the proper signal.

So, basically you're wasting time going from digital (card) to analog (cable) back to digital again (LCD) and possibly losing quality along the way (?).

The card does it in case you have an out-dated monitor or CRT, which use analog.

The monitor does it in case you have an out-dated card that only supports analog.

Both are legacy support for the older format (analog).

I've heard the DVI can transfer more data at faster rates, but I think that was in general, and that for monitors you won't notice MUCH difference (IMO you can probably see a little).

i can tell a difference from vga to dvi, dvi looks better. if you have to buy a cable shop around. radio shack wanted to charge 70 bucks for a dvi cable, i got mine from newegg for 12, plus 3 shipping.

Use DVI (digital) so you don't have to keep tweaking various things to get the picture just right. Analogue is suceptible to variations due to heat etc, and it is old stuff that needs killing off.

Digital is prettier.

Analog is faster.
