Title: Property Removal for re-building
Post by: cav58d on May 02, 2007, 05:11:16 PM
Suppose someone were to buy a piece of land, with an existing house on the property, however, had the intentions of demoloshing the house, and re-building a new home.  Say the house is well clear of any tree's or obstructions.  Is it possible to contact your local fire department and offer the house that will be taken down to be used as a controlled blaze for firefighter training?

I know the local fire dept does that, I don't know the logistics of it, but it is a rare occurrence, say once every 3 years.

I'll bet if you call and speak the the chief in the area he'd be able to tell you.

Contact the local fire department and ask.

I don't think they'll let you burn it, Cav-Too many things inside the house(insulation, plastics, unknown substances that turn toxic when burned) Will be the primary reason.

That was done several times in my own home town. I doubt you'd have much trouble with it.

They'll give you a list of things that have to be removed from the premises before they'd do it.  They'll be interested, training is always a good thing, and a real house to use is great.

I worked for a plumbing company once, and the owner had a house he was going to let the FD burn.  He sent a couple of us out there to strip the shingles off the roof, and I don't remember what else had to be cleared first.

Call/visit the local department, they'll tell what ya need to know, and most likely they'll apprciate your wanting to donate a house for training.

I was also with a volunteer department once upon a time, and I can recall to instances where people donated a house and a trailer for us to burn for training.  The chief and training officer were very happy.

Is this in Fairfield County?  Because it's always been a small dream of mine to watch one of those houses go down in flames :D (kidding, kidding haha).

Seriously though, if it happens, I want in.  I'll buy the beer.

I was a volunteer firefighter in Alaska and Colorado; I remember practicing with donated structures.  I think we practiced venting the roof and busting up the place.  I’m not sure but it may be possible to damage a foundation in a fire; do you plan on re-using it?

I think the best way to go would be to invite a bunch of ninjas over for an espresso party.
