First off to all you newbies: Alt-F4 closes the app immediately no questions asked. If someone tells you to press Alt-F4 for any other reason he is a jack@zz.
It may have been funny the first 8 million times but it's getting old after 10 years.
Don't you think this game is hard enough to learn for a newb? And don't tell me they can just read the manual. Anyone can read the manual, but few can recall all of it & try to learn to fly this sim at the same time.
This community depends on new people joining & staying. The more people playing the more that Hitech can put back into the game.
And what do you get out of telling someone to do alt-F4 anyway? That makes you superior, just part of the hazing process? Trying to get your first kill in the MA is hazing enough IMHO.

I got "Alt+F4'd" the first few days I was in AH and asked a question. I laughed. Answered "Bite me". In the meantime, someone had given me the answer I needed.
No biggie. I got it. I'm just guessing someone computer savvy enough to turn on a computer, connect to the Internet, use a web browser, find AH, download it, install it, create an account, and log on isn't going to fall for "Alt+F4".
If you really want to start a crusade about text buffer nonsense, try to get people to stop complaining about HO's, runners, and cherry pickers. That's my pet peeve. To each his own, I guess.

I'm with Rauchen. I don't think it's a terribly funny joke. And if it drives even a few people away, I think the marginal utility is not high.

It's a little bit of a pet peeve of mine as well. I'll generally give a straight answer when I see someone say alt-F4 unless I feel like being a banana in which case I try to make my answer semi humorous. You say it's getting old after 10 years, it's getting old for me after only 4 ish years.:rolleyes:

A very well known player in The Unforgiven was flying one night in a 262. I won't say his name but he is someone I consider a vet in as much as he should know better (we'll call him SpiceDeath for the sake of the story). Squad vox went something like this - and forgive me, I can't remember the perp's name.
SD: "What's the key to switch viz modes? I forgot"
Perp: "Alt + F4 aint it?"
Silence
I check the channel box
Me: "Oh for f**ks sake, he believed you!"
A couple of minutes later
SD: "You F&$&ers!"
Channel ceases being usefull for a good 10 minutes while we collapse in convulsive laughter.
While treating noobs to this old, old trick is indeed old, this was priceless.

LOL ack-ack, reminds me of another one I heard a few months back, its a good one but requires a careful setup. You have to convince someone that they can rearm in the air by flying below 150ft agl, and below 150ias, and then hit alt+tab. Havent been able to pull it off yet.

I am with rauchen. I dont think how its funny at all. Most of us wouldnt find it funny if it happened to us. Something funny is what makes people on the giving and receiving end laugh... I dont think the Alt+F4 "joke" fits into the funny category. Seems to me to be more a way to make a fool of someone else, which is just not cool.
Now, flushing all the toilets while the significant other is taking a shower, that is funny.

I understand that there are some questions a player has that just aren't answered by the manual but general game play questions such as "how do I drive this GV" or "How do I raise flaps" are answered in the manual and those questions make up 99.99% of the questions asked.
If the player can't take the time to read the manual on how to play this game, why should you expect someone who is playing to take their valuable time away from their enjoyment to answer questions that the new player can readily found in the manual?[/rant]

Alt+F4 is a timeless classic. I remember this answer being given out on the original BBS's when people would dial up with their lightning fast 2400 baud modems (Pre-public internet days) So more than likely the guy dialing in to the BBS lived very close to you.
Anyone else remember paying to get on a local BBS? Lotsa fun games back then too... I still have BBS server software, maybe I will dust off a 386 DOS machine i have laying around and refresh my memory at the common games and features on there.

For my first 2 months in this game, I fell for that every time. That sounds kinda retarded right? Heres a hint: It was never aimed at me. Id see some n00b ask how to get a jet, and someone would respond "Press Alt + f4" And id look down, and without even thinking Id go "I should try that!" Pressed it. Got closed in the middle of a flight. Did it a grand total of 23 times. Not ONCE was the trick directed at me :confused:

it's harmless noob hazing....for f's sake it's a joke and a funny one...I fell for it once and got smart to it. I use it once in a while when the gf ack arrives and I have to pretend I was doing something productive instead of....well sitting around shootin at(and missing) cartoon airplanes. If you are so angry to post a thread about alt-f4...then I say wait 2 weeks and see how you feel.

In situations like this, i have to ask myself, "whats the worst thing that could happen" He has to spend 1 min to restart AH? I can't imagine someone quitting because a player told them to hit alt-f4 and they did it. Maybe they learn what alt-f4 does now.
Though i don't really find the joke that funny, guess heard it too many times, I don't really see what the fuss is about. It's not like we are going to their house and placing Saran wrap over the toilet and greasing up the ear piece of their telephone....:noid

I am with AKAK on this. I view the Alt+F4 thing like hazing. This place is like a big family. I can think of tons of stuff that I did to my brother that was cruel when we were growing up. I can think of a lot of stuff I have done to fellow military members that was sort of mean but funny as hell. No harm, no foul. Threads like this do nothing but stir the pot.

I am with Ack Ack and Murdr on this...
Before I even started my 2 weeks, I spent over a week reading the online documentation and practicing offline, and I still read about an hour a week on ACM. Sure, I couldn't remember everything, but at least I knew how to out up my gear...
Maybe that's the difference between an adult and a teenager, but of course this is a generalization.

I think if you have nothing helpful or constructive to offer when a person ask for help or ask a question, then why even bother with giving someone FALSE information..........you wasted both your time and their time.........
and I would bet money if I had some, that everyone in the game does not know it all, and that if everyone was to READ THE F**K**G Manual, that everyone would learn at least 1 thing they did not know...............
so here, have a nice cup of STFU, if yyou have nothing of value to offer, and spend your time playing your game, instead of wasting your time giving false or unnecessary distracted answers when a person asks a question........which will be a waste of their time as well if they follow thru with the false answer you gave them........

I have given the ole 'ALT-F4' to somebody before. It's my opinion he deserved it though. He kept begging for the AH Cheat codes. After his 10th request, I told him to try 'ALT-F4'. Apparently he did as his name disappeared from the roster. Sometimes, it's just plain justifiable. :D

To me it's always been a 2 part deal. I've always considered ALT+F4 to sort of a ritual, hazing, whatever you want to call it. In the end there's really no harm done, the person has to relog into the game. Sure it can be a little mean but it's almost like the price of admission. The 2nd part IMHO is after you've told that helpless little noob to ALT+F4 himself, you really should take a minute to help him out. You've played a little prank at his expense now help him into the game.

What pisses me off more are people that just come in the game and expect everyone else to tell them EVERYTHING about it without doing a bit of reading and/or research. These people deserve to get Alt-F4'd at least once. I don't mind helping someone out that has at least made an effort!

Soulyss, it was funny when you guys were teenagers but you're more mature now and like many things in life, it's a good idea to revisit things as your viewpoint changes. What if it were your dad, granddad or uncle playing for the first time and you weren't there at his shoulder guiding him through it. This game is only another game, made fun by the people in it and if your teammates act like a bunch of jerks there's no reason to come back after being dumped to the desktop. Not everyone attracted to a flight sim has played in the rough and tumble world of FPS and they judge games by a different set of standards.

ALT +F4 will never get old.
What gets old is the fact that those newbies don't want to read and want everything to be explained to them.
Basic questions from newbies that get old..
1- How do yo turn the engine on?
2- If you drop the external fuel tanks in town will they do any damage.
3- how do you move forward in a GV.
4- I dropped my troops at the airfield and nothing happened.
The other night a newbie took control of the only CV we owned and enemy Bombers where on their way to kill it. We begged the guy to release command or move the CV by VOX and Text and he never did. Finally the bombers took the CV down. So we thanked him for destroying our CV and he argued that by moving the CV it would have done nothing!.
LONG LIVE ALT + F4!

Alt F4 is a windows function, not and AH function. If you dont know about it because you have been using DOS 3.3 until now or you are Mac / Linux user, well, you deserve it and it is a good way to learn about Alt-F4 and what it does. Don't forget, it can only hapen once to you. If it happens more than once, I would not be posting about it :rofl

Just one view point, I can tell you my *if* my father were to play this game, and fell for the olf alt f4 (very likely) he would see it for what it is, a joke. I'm sure he would have a puzzled look on his face at first, then shake his head and laugh.
Then again, I guess someone might get all mad and cuss and swear and quit......I wonder how other aspects of the game will affect them, like getting HO'd or just shot out of sky.

The bottom line is the new player should take the time to read the manual on how to play the game. It really is that simple. Again, why should people take time to answer some new player's questions that the new player could have found out himself if he took the time to read the manual? I understand if the question is of the sort that the manual doesn't answer, such as things like "how do I reverse on a bogie on my 6" but with general game play questions, you'll get the alt+F4 from me.

Its funny. Back in the day, and i mean way back, folks werent so self centered as to not help new players. Moreso, they werent malicious enough to go even further by not only not helping new folks, they actually expended the energy (which could have been used to help out) to prank someone...then feel big and crow about it.
Glad everyone's not like that.

I remember the ALT-F4 trick in Air Warrior in '93ish, and it was probably not new then. When it was done to me then, I laughed my ****ing bellybutton off.
If someone's psyche is so fragile that a dumb prank like ALT-F4 turns them away, I doubt they would have made it in this game long term anyway.

I personally was lucky with having a squad right when I converted from wife ack to Aces High Princess ... I knew all about alt f4!!

I was "hazed" by the alt-f-4 thing....I had never owned a computer,...i truely didnt know wtf for about 3 days... after about 25 times of getting booted, it dawned on me, hmmm it only happens when i use alt f-4 supercharger.... hmmm, they didnt call me "lightning" at work for nothing, I got over it, as I got over, "go to the maintence bay, ...and get a can of squelch grease",, for the radios, were goin to the field.....I got over it...these things are never gonna end :) yes deep down im a analtube :) :huh

Boy, ppl upset about the lamest things. Alt F-4 is a traditional part of the "learning curve" of the game. When I first started, I was told the "alt f4" for something( can't remember which choice), so of course I did it. When I ctd'd, I thought I did alt f4 wrong, or missequenced, so I proceeded to log back in, ask someone, alt f4'd again lmao!
I also fell for the "Don't bail below 10k for safety" bit.
Can't figure why someone would get upset, true it's a silly prank, but when silly pranks aren't funny anymore, then you are an old, miserable, cranky person. Not only in age, but in mind and spirit. Maybe ppl who get upset about something as small as an alt f4 joke, seek anger management counseling, and get your heart checked. You are prolly overstressing your heart, not to mention elevating blood pressure. This is a "GAME" If it's not fun to you by all means, find something that is, and.....STFU:cry

If someone asks a question and takes the time to use good grammar and spelling, then I will take the time to give him an honest answer.
But yet if someone talks like they are mentally retarded and types something like

or other retarded spewing that gets repeated on country text 10 times, I will go out of my way to aggrivate them.
The worst of them all are noobs that will ask to be someone's gunner a half dozen times in 30 seconds. I will purposely tell them that I need one just so they are stuck in my aircraft (fighter, goon, etc) and cant do a dang thing until I die/auger/land etc.

I pulled the ALT+F4 prank on someone, I think he was asking how to drop bombs. A few minutes later he came back and said "that closed the game" and then proceded to be angry :)

Here is the question you all have to ask yourself:
What are you getting out of it when you disrupt another's gameplay?
I wouldn't get anything out of possibly making someone (and usually a new player) close out their game when they maybe had their very first kill or maybe even 5 kills that they can't land now, because they're staring at their desktop.
I mean if this sorta thing makes you laugh then each to his own, just giving my own opinion on what I would and wouldn't find funny.
If I was a new player, and I had my very first aerial kill and then someone told me to press ALT F4 to lower my gear so I could land my kills, I sure as hell would not be laughing.
But hey, some people get their kicks out of that.
To me, it's just a childish, high schoolish prank that is very immature.
It'd be the same as pulling the power cord on your friend's Nintendo after they had already gotten through 40 levels of Ghouls 'n Goblins (a game which had no save option btw).
Oh and btw, I know it's just a game, but game or not you're providing your own entertainment and amusement off of someone else's misfortune and possible frustration.
My 2 cents.

Alt+F4 is a timeless classic. I remember this answer being given out on the original BBS's when people would dial up with their lightning fast 2400 baud modems (Pre-public internet days) So more than likely the guy dialing in to the BBS lived very close to you.
Anyone else remember paying to get on a local BBS? Lotsa fun games back then too... I still have BBS server software, maybe I will dust off a 386 DOS machine i have laying around and refresh my memory at the common games and features on there.

If you have LORD (Legend of the red dragon) that would be awesome if you would host a tourney. Lepaul used to run it on his boards, but then he got rid of his server and went for a public host type thing.

I just pulled the alt+f4 gag the other night # guy whinning about getting shot down and being vulched. I told him alt+f4 was the invincibility command for two weekers. It got a good chuckle, and a newb bent on revenge:t All in good fun!

If you actually thing someone quits Aces High because he gets Alt+f4 pranked, you need to wake up and smell the bacon.
I'd say newbs have a better chance of quitting AH2 because they can't fly, lose fights, get vulched, etc etc than they do from getting ALT+f4 pranked..
get pranked once shame on them, twice shame on you...

If I was a new player, and I had my very first aerial kill and then someone told me to press ALT F4 to lower my gear so I could land my kills, I sure as hell would not be laughing.
But hey, some people get their kicks out of that.
If you are a new player and you have to ask someone how to lower your gear YOU DESERVE to lose your kill to the ALT-F4 trick.

I am totally with you on this one rauchen! The "Alt-F4" gambit is sophomoric and it leaves the newbie with the impression that their presence isn't' needed or necessary (which couldn't be further from the truth!). It's only funny to those that take delight in messing with others and it would be nice if folks would just stop doing it. But I am a realist and I know that a certain few in the community will not be able to control their urges and try and be funny at the expense of a noob.

Why would a any new player deserve that just because they didn't know something about the game?
Do you expect them to be instant experts at it or something?

I expect them to read the manual. I expect them print out the command sheets instead of barrage country channel for everything they need to know. If they are too lazy to print the command page they get what they deserve.

You and me both brother. I'd rather shove an ice pick in my ear than deal with snot nose squeakers too lazy to read the manual. The Trainers we have in AH have my utmost respect.

I would NEVER pull the alt+f4 gag on ANYONE. Honest! And Nixon was not a crook.
I laughed my butt off when I got pranked with it. And I still think it's funny as he**. It's even better when a veteran player gets alt+f4 on the brain and does it by mistake (I'm looking at you, 96Delta).
Having said that, I do help the noobs out an awful lot as long as they're not buttheads (anyone remember gutrip? sheesh). I just can't resist the alt+f4 trick a lot of the time :rolleyes:
My best prank was when I convinced two new guys that, if shot down, a friendly could come pick him up in a C47. Everyone got a good laugh at that one.
Pranks are fun. Nobody is going to quit the game over one and everyone gets a good laugh.
If you don't find such things funny you may want to find a doctor to remove that stick.

There is a difference between being in the training arena and in the MAs. For new people, it clearly list the arenas. Now don't help me, but the training arena sounds like a good place to learn things. If you are to clueless as to go to the TA, let alone read the manual then you deserve it.
BTW I've spent many months in the TA/DA both teaching and learning. When I logged into AH for the 1st time I went to the MA. Realizing that it wasn't the place to learn, 10 mins later I was in the TA. In the MA if someone brings up a question that is simple to find, I sure as heck will give them the ol alt-F4. Now if I was in the TA I'd answer their questions honestly.
