Title: What the Heck Causes This??????
Post by: Bubbajj on May 04, 2007, 12:25:58 AM
Was stalking a Typhoon in LW yesterday, an alt-monkey cherry picker, you know the type. Well, I spent five minutes climbing to co-alt whilst he's B'in and Z'in with wild abandon. When he spots me coming up he makes a run at me. We cross in the merge and I pull up hard. I get around first, only just slightly, but I got my nose on target first and lay out a blast as he passes over me. I know I got hits as I saw junk falling off his plane (should have been dead as I was hitting with a Yak's 30mm) and he flew over me. Straight by, right over the top of me, could have shot him in the belly with my pistol had I tried, I mean, CLEAN OVER AND BY ME. Two seconds later I'm hearing pings and I'm back in the tower. Golly-geeNIT!!!!  I don't think I got picked as we were pretty isolated. Is this connection speed, computer speed, what? This was crap as the kill should have been mine. Is there a way to avoid this. Are there settings I could change? C'mon, throw me a bone here.

If your system can handle the extra demand, I suggest you start filming flights/fights and reviewing the films.  It's the absolute best way to see "what happened".

Then, you could submit it for peer review, or send it in to HTC if you suspect something is wrong.  Film is worth 10,000 words.  Hard to give a good answer to a written testimony.

I'm not calling anyone a cheater. I'm just wondering if there are settings that could help reduce or eliminate this kind of lag kill.

It's hard for a player, who was not there, to visualize what you are trying to describe accurately by a verbal description.

If you are experiencing lag, there may be things you can do.  If it is the other guy's lag causing problem, not much you can do at all.

Like whoever replied first said, film everything. I film pretty much every sortie, and rename the ones where something cool (or lame) happened to something coherent.

I had this happen a few times over the years.

I think it might have to do with your positions and bullet hits/damage being transmitted via different network protocols (UDP vs. TCP) which could account for quite a delay between the time you see him passing by and the time stuff falls off your plane.

I once lit up a guy in a HO, saw his plane break apart from my bullets,  leveled out, climbed a few k and then his hits registered and killed me.

Just a thought. Maybe you did kill him as you said, perhaps you took  his tail off with yak's 37mm and as he spun out of control he started spraying  and got a lucky hit on you. Very rare and frustrating when it happens, but I've been killed by those 4 20mm planes after I've taken their tail off before.

Sounds very much like a packet delay to me....

On his FE he's hitting you and yet somewhere along the route the information is getting delayed. When it eventually comes through (That he was in fact hitting you), He' miles away and you get all the hits he's landed in one burst.

Had something very similar happen to me over a very exaggerated time period. Was fighting a Spit 16, killed him, there was mention on 200 of "rubber bullets" from him, then, just as I'm landing, miles away from any con, ping ping ping ping ping ping! Parts fall off my plane, pilot wound, oil hits, radiator hits, the whole lot, all in one loud mess.

My hit packets got through to him and ended his flight. His packets didn't get to me until at least 5 minutes later.

That's the Internet for you though, huh!

I would say it is how TinmanX and Leitwolf posted about. I experienced some of these last night, and alot of other people was complaining about the same thing........

get shot at, plane is done flown past or flown by you and is 800/1,000/1,5k  to 2k away then all of a sudden you just start spewing an oil leak, or you experience a few ping sounds and you see bullet hooles in the cockpit , or your motor dies, or your plane is missing some parts........

packet loss / net lag / packet delays / zig zaggady variance  more than likely.......

Had some problems like that.  Was getting some major lag from time to time.  SEEMED like my vid card was WAY behind my CPU, or the net lag was really bad, or was starting to think there was something wrong with AH.  I was seeing things LATE!  Often AFTER they happened.

I could shoot at em and watch the tracers SEEM to go right through them!  And sometimes I could fire at the WRONG spot, I could way over lead em, and HIT EM?????

This always SEEMED to happen when the AH Arenas were at their fullest  (400 or more) !!!!!!  And SEEMED to rarely occur when the Arenas had a low population (350 or less).

When I complained about it on 200 several people, that apparently were having NO SUCH problem said I was whining and making excuses.

Please keep in mind I like to get in CLOSE, and mix it up.  Often doing so in some BIG furballs.  When you do this LAG can be VERY BAD for YOU!

I tried filming.

Film very often didn't SEEM to match what I remembered seeing.

I could SWEAR that during the fight the evilred ikon type wasn't even pointing at me but I would get HIT!

Run the film back and dang it!  In the film the evilred ikon type was pointing at me?!?!?!?!

NOTE:  when you film in AH what the CPU sees is what is recorded!!! Not what the video card sees!!!

Turns out I had too many things running in the background and my CPU was too BZ!  It wasn't updating my vid card quick enough!  That and normal net lag, arena numbers, etc ........... #!*&%

Try using FSautostart!!!!!!

Disables many things for AH and restarts them when your done!

Can also reset your memory just before you start AH.

You can run FSautostart and have it start you AH too.

Works very well!

Now I can get in and mix it up and what I see is pretty dang close to what is actually happening!  Even in some pretty big furballs!

Every now and then, in REALLY BIG furballs, and arena numbers are HIGH, the problem still SEEMS to resurface?!?!?! :(   Just a little.  My shots SEEM to go right through an evilred ikon type from time to time :(

Maybe since we download new skins while playing, the AH-servers might just have a hard time?

Just a thought.

You see for every kill in the game, there is an employee tallying the damage with a Texas Instruments calculator. As you are taking hits he is adding it up, and the times it lags is when he reaches for his coffee before hitting the equal sign.

Hmm only cannons yak have are the 20mm shVAK or the 37mm NS 37. If you hit him with only 20mms it will take between 3-5 shot to gte akill shot if they are in the same place.f you were useing the 37mm it will only take 1-2 rounds. One if you hit wings or tail or two if you hit engine or they are a wooden plane.

Edit: Were you shooting only the cannon or the MG and cannon becuse if you were shooting MG theres no way to tell if any were 20mms hit if you were in the Yak9U. If you were in the Yak9T and hit with a 37mm you would have seen an explosion form the HE.

I dunno if the skins (in-game) are coming through the same pipe as the game data, but the recent lags and skips might be due to over-utilization caused by massive skin downloads?

I seem to remember that new skins also cause skips because the first time you see a new skin on another plane, a graphic image is created and cached for the first time. Once you've processed them all, the skips slow way, way down.

In other words, I think the new skins cause brief delays on our computers more than on the servers.

I think what he's getting at is that all those files are being transmitted in addition to all the game data. While those with fast connections are probably better off, I can tell an immediate difference in the quality of my connection when I'm downloading skins. I would think, that no matter how fast the servers are, that a hundred files of several MBs in size going out to several hundred players simultaneously would have some sort of effect.

No idea how HTC sets their stuff up, just guessing at this.

This kinda thing has happened to me, the problem is, that little gun that fires wit the 30mm.  If u notice how slow the 30mm fires u would notice sometimes its the little guns hitting not the 30

You need to film it. There are sticks in this game that can do a high chandelle or other reversal, and clean your clock, leaving you in disbelief.

Film will show warps/FE problems...It will also show pilot skill.
