I live northwest of Greensburg a couple hours drive away.  Relatively close but relatively far away also.  We watched the lightning and saw the big storm cell.  We can see things that distance because out here in western Kansas we have a lack of trees and hills to block any view of the prairies and fields.  The local news painting a bleak view of things at the moment too.  We have sure had more than the normal tornado happenings in our area this year.

Our prayers go out to the deceased and hurt ones.

According to our news... Greenburg is flat as the plains.  Didn't see anything standing 'cept a wind scrubbed house, a pool, and what looked like a greenhouse with no glass.

If tornados freak ya out then you definitely don't want to go through a hurricane.  I went through various parts of Andrew, Irene, Frances, Jeanne, Katrina and Wilma.  Katrina scored an almost direct hit when it was a cat 1.  Wilma's eye passed over my place as a decent cat 2.  The others were annoyances for me.

The damage from the F4 in Kansas looks exaclty like Homestead, FL did after Andrew.  Miles and miles of utter destruction.

My heart goes out to the people of Greensburg.

I lived in Greeensburg KS. for a few years after i left the army in 83, and before that lived in a small town  named Coldwater about 23 miles to the south. The town of Greensburg being our greatest rival in football.
I didnt hear about this until i came to work monday morning. and I do have a friend on the casualty list. Have been in  contact thru messenger services with some of my friends and they can not describe what is left. from the pics I saw the only thing left i could recognize was the grain elevator. It reminded me of the town of Udal Kansas, destroyed in the 50's I just pray they will rebuild... My Prayers to those I know and also to those I dont.
Thanks to all those on this board for thier prayers also

I've been through both. Grew up in Oklahoma and have been in a few and seen a bunch of tornados. I've been living on the East Coast for the last 12 years and have been through a few hurricanes as well and I'll take a hurricane over a tornado any day. Hurricanes give you days to get prepared, tornados only give you minutes and that's if your lucky. Plus hurricanes don't normally drop hail the size of baseballs and softballs on your head either.

Nothing scarier than looking at a super cell pump up over the prarie and know it's heading your way. Then the sky turns this weird shade of green and then goes almost black, well at that point your screwed. All this can happen in less that 30 mintues and if you don't see the signs early enough it will catch you by surprise.

Hurricanes pffft. The only reason people die from hurricanes is because they were too stupid to get out of the way. Tornados often don't give you the chance to get out of the way leaving you no choice but to try and ride it out.

Hurricanes spawn lots of tornadoes..... and no one knows where a hurricane will go in till the last minutes before it hits..... they are notorious about changing directions.

This was about as bad as the outbreak of tornados in 97 when Jarrell TX pretty much got wiped off the map.

I have been in quite a few hurricanes.  I'll take them over a tornado (assuming the 'cane doesn't spawn 'em) any day.

Yeah but how many F3,4,5 tornados does a hurricane spawn??? Any tornado from a hurricane is going to be small, short lived, and wont cause that much damage.

As far as a hurricane changing directions, your still looking at a foot print from the storm that covers hundreds of miles, and you still have plenty of warning. The weather services and the Air Force spend days tracking them and plotting the most likely course and the landfall predictions have been fairly accurate for the last couple of decades.

A killer F5 tornado like what hit in Kansas just drops out of the sky with little to no warning.

True, but the tornadoes you get from a hurricane are rarely as intense as a super cell spawning out F5's over the great plains. I'm not negating hurricanes by any means, but you still have a better chance of getting away before the storm hits. Many times people are caught sleeping in bed by tornadoes.

Sorry, Hornet covered that, I should have read the whole thread before posting.

It's an honor .

If you happen to be on about the time I post this Shifty, check out the radar. Severe storms coming from the east and west. Intresting to say the least.

The one between Greenville and Texarkana just cliped us to the North. It's been a busy storm season. Nothing like those poor folks in Kansas though.
God Bless them.

My wife and I just stopped in Jarrell this past Saturday to buy gas on our trip home from San Antonio. Besides the gas station we really didn't see much else. We wondered how big the town had been before the twister hit.
