Steps on many freedoms?
http://www.sierratimes.com/07/05/09/Paul.htm
will it pass and be signed into law?
“Criminalizing even the vilest hateful thoughts—as opposed to willful criminal acts—is inconsistent with a free society.” —Rep. Ron Paul

Ron Paul seems to be the only one with a brain in Washington.

Here you can find a copy of the bill already passed by the house. (http://www.congress.org/congressorg/webreturn/?url=http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:H.R.1592:) Rather than a particular politicians stance on the matter.

The very idea that a crime is worse or that it should be punished more because of what the perpetrator thought of the victim is a huge step towards removing freedom of thought. and... freedom in general.

the question each of you need to ask yourself is, "How many more freedoms am I going to lose, before I stand up and do something?"

Disagree. It's a huge step to inequality. But giving one race more bonuses then another, or punish harder for crimes committed against, you are encouraging everyone to not be equal, or to not expect to be treated equally.

I disagreed with Lazs, you just happened to post right before me.

lazer..you weren't disagreeing with me so far as I could tell... I don't know who you were talking about.. I said nothing about equality for you to disagree with.
I was talking about thought. what I said is what I said.
you remind me of the lefties who get all upset with other lefties who don't tow the party line.
You don't like my pragmatic way of dealing with the lack of individualism so you look for a way to attack me in every way you can. You just look silly doing it but...you can't help yourself..
Just like the lefties... I make you more mad than the real enemy. I won't jump on your martyr bandwagon so.... in your mind that makes me worse than the hated lefties...

So... when are the people going to tell the elected officials to stop missinterpreting the Constitution, and stop making up new ways to circumvent it? For sure "We the People..." didn't intend for a bunch of greedy lawyers to...
Oh hell, no sense beating a dead horse. Those that know what's right here, will never be abel to convince those that want more gvernment ruining their lives.

We've seen this before. We will see this again.
"When they came for the Poles, I said nothing, for I was not a Pole.
When they came for the Gypsies, I said nothing, for I was not a Gypsy.
When they came for the Jews, I said nothing, for I was not a Jew.
When they came for me, no one said anything, for there was no one left."

Hmmm.
Guy comparing the U.S. to the Third Reich.
Isn't this where someone asks "why do you hate America?"
And what's that called, anyway? I thought there was a special term applied to the "Hitlar comparison."

Just another form of grabbing power and control from the people. Adding additional levels to existing laws to make them "more badder" is like Animal House's "Super Secret Probation".
Okay, Riddle Me This,....
Why are there quite a few state governors upset at the Bush Administration's effort to usurp Control of the National Guard away from those States and place them under Federal control for missions such as riot control and disaster relief? These have always been state missions, under the Governor of that particular State.
This was slipped into a 2007 Defense Authorization Act without debate and passed late last year.
Democrat and Republican Governors all oppose the change and state that the provision was not discussed ahead of time. The Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman, Sen John Warner, R-Va stated "The provision was fully available in the public domains for review and debate for over five on this prior to its final passage in the House and Senate, and approval by the President." Probably had something to do with a locked cabinet in a sub-basement of an outlying government building somewhere in Washington D.C. The whole thing resembles the first couple of chapters of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Disneyland on the Potomac keeps getting more surreal every day.

sandie... get off the vicodin... I did not accuse lazer of being a commie lefty...
I accused him of using the tactics of the left. Of being just as womanly.

it might violate the 14th amendment, equal protection under the law.

"hate crimes" is something only a woman or a socialist could think up..
If I had read that in the book 1984 it would have given me nightmares like so many of the other things in the book that have since come to pass and gave us all nightmares back then..
Now.. we just accept it...
tedbr gets it with the animal house analogy.. We can't have levels of punishment based on skin color or gender or religion or whatever... you burn a church you are an arsonist.. you murder a gay... you are a murderer.
If the punishments for those crimes are not tough enough then make em tougher but make em apply to all equally.
