What specific ports need to be open for AH LAN play? I use a real firewall, so allowing aceshigh.exe is not an option.
The goal is to let my dad connect to a H2H on my box so we can putt around together.

"The current port range for all arenas in Aces High is 2000-6000, inclusive, for UDP and TCP. Aces High will use a random subset of those ports for all online play (8 Player included)."

I think you will find that you don't need all those ports.

The game uses a random subset of ports in that range. It is not the same as hosting. The thread you are pointing too has a lot of incorrect information in it.
Let's not propagate that.

So the short answer is for a LAN based game over a WAN I need to show my 80-something father how to VPN in to my home network over a secure link and give his machine pretty much full access to the game box.
I can do that.

Make sure both are in the same subnet Puck, or at least appear to be in the same subnet.

That's the plan. Thanks, Skuzzy.

I'm wrestling with VPN stuff for the 1st time. I cheated and used Hamachi to work around all I dont know for my immediate needs but couldnt find a decent reference source. Any recommendations on a good starting point (on line and/or book). Not looking to become an expert but want to be able to configure/deploy "basic" VPN architecture if possible.

OpenVPN (http://openvpn.net/)

Indeed it does. Depending on your prospective of course.

It's not a matter of perspective. It is a matter of fact. Ports change. Layouts and assignments move around.
