England - Prime Minister Tony Blair said Thursday that he will step down as prime minister on June 27, after a decade in office in which he brokered peace in Northern Ireland and followed the United States to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He was allright. And thats all i have to say about that.
-
I understand that he is unpopular because of the iraq situation. Are there other issues that are causing his problems. We don't really get much news at all as far as Brit politics go.
-
He was doing good for the English people....Then he followed errrrr ummmmm errrrrrrrrr a certian person into War. History has yet to be written on this One.
-
Good riddance I say

People's views of Blair (http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?sortBy=2&threadID=6303&edition=1&ttl=20070510175557paginator)
Edit: this one sums it up:
A man eager to please and be liked but with no firm principles.
An illegal war
Uncontrolled immigration
Rising crime and falling behaviour throughout society
A lopsided devolution that will ultimately break up the UK
Giving away our EU rebate for nothing in return
A lowering of educational standards to massage university entry figures
High tax, little if any improvement
Sleaze and spin
Bypassing of his cabinet

Interestingly enough Blair's Labour party has still managed to stay in control of the House of Commons and we re-elected Bush.

i watch brit politics sometimes, i allways thought he is a young and clever
man, doing a good job until the iraq war...
there he showed he have no balls to say what he should say, there he lost everythink,
he transformed into a cheap puppet and the result is nobody trust him
or are interested in his real opinions today....
...game over...

Not much of a surprise. I seem to recall Blair used to follow Willy Jeff quite a bit as well.
Maybe his next replacement will have some stones of his own.

England is the Greatest nation on earth. All that the world is today, is in large part because of England.

England was the greatest nation on earth. This however is another debate for another time. But you are right, most of the world today owes, in large part, England and its empire for everything. The includes the good and the bad.

Good riddance. Nashwan about summed up why British people don't like him.
He was popular for a year or two when he first came into power but that was mostly because people were really fed up with the previous Conservative government and welcomed change. The problem many people still have is that there are no really strong political parties that are really worthy of being the next government; they're all as bad as each other.
I hope history remembers him as an idiot and a liar...
-
He single handedly did all those things huh. Where is, or was, the rest of Parlament? Don't they have a say in making policy and governmental changes or do they just elect a single monarch like PM then follow like lemmings wherever he / she leads? :huh
-
Mav, during Bliar's first term his government had an overwhelming majority which pretty much allowed him to force everything through Parliament no matter what the opposition thought. He often ignored any intelligent advice and ploughed on with whatever he wanted to do. He had far too much power during this period and I believe now it's a bit more balanced (don't quote me on that though because I'm a little out of touch with British politics but that's my rough understanding) ;)

All we need now is the tories to win, they're worse than Blair by a long way.
I'm from Scotland originally and I'm really glad the SNP won there.
-
so Blair was King of England? Like Bush is here LOL
or is he just the scape goat as Bush is here ...
-
LOL... Bush the scapegoat.
-
"WOW you could change the name to Bush and its a mirror image"
Are you LIbs gonna hammer the guy for not following the will of the people, or hammer him for being wishy - washy?
Lol, I know it's tough for a supposedly open minded lot to make up your minds.

Good riddance to bad war criminals. If only we could apply the Nuremberg Principles and have him executed!

To which you can add the disgrace that is the Extradition Act 2003 (the treaty is still not ratified in the US I notice).
He was better than Major and he will almost certainly be better than Brown when he assumes power. I can't see a Scottish Prime Minister and a Scottish dominated Cabinet being acceptable in England now that many powers have been devolved to Scotland: why should we accept that they can make decisions for England that do not effect their own electorates because the equivalent power now rests with the Scottish Parliament?
-
Ah the good old British goodbye to their PM. Hammered by the everyone. In a sense it's what makes Britain the country it is. Very free and beholden to no one.
I can't think of a Brit PM who didn't quit under a cloud. In the end history will judge him.
I will say that he can boast of something that has frustrated many a British government. The 'Irish question'. He can't take full credit but he did his bit and finally and astonishingly there seems to be peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. He will be remembered for that if nothing else. All credit to the USA too for it's part in the process.
I have to say though, Gordon Brown. Does anyone honestly think a dour Scotsman can win the next election. Oh please!
-
I liked Blair when he was first elected...shame he pissed it all away...
I wouldn't be so hard on poodle when it comes to Bush and Iraq - our pm's such a sycophant he makes Blair look like Saddam in comparison...
Tronsky
-
Gordon Brown has every chance of being as popular as John Major - he'll probably scrape through the next election before being soundly trashed at the one after that.
The English views on having a Scottish Prime Minister are interesting. Pre-devolution, I'd bet most of them wouldn't have cared, but now English nationalism is growing because of events in Scotland, just as Scots nationalism grew on the back of resentment of English mis-management.
It'll be an interesting couple of years in Britain. Just glad I'm not there.

illegal war :rofl
Now thats funny!!! I'd love to see any of these armchair politocians do a better leading the free world than Bush and Blair did. I guess the next time a few thousand noncombatants get slaughtered in a single day we should have Hillary get up in front of the world and beg forgivness for whatever we did to upset the fanatics.
:aok
Maybe we should even send them some money to aid them in blowing us up a few more times like Saddam did for the PLO, before we we removed him with our illegal war. Or we can go kill 40,000 more Kurds to make up for his lack of progress since we started our illegal war. Oh I got it, why don't we hunt down and imprision everybody that voted for one of the elected officals that voted for our illegal war. How about the next time we decide to send our nations military to fight for you we ask them how they feel about defending those of you who call their actions illegal. I sure hope none of your loved ones die in the next terrorist attack because I will think twice before I go to war for you again.:D
