Title: Setup for May 11
Post by: Oldman731 on May 11, 2007, 08:08:18 AM
ITALY - 1943

Arguably a colossal waste of Allied resources
once the Foggia bases were captured, the continuation
of the Italian campaign encompassed some of
the most heroic, tragic fighting of the war.

In this setup we have used the lovely Italian map's
wide sweep to permit different types of combat at
different locations (apologies to historians, but
the map is largely wasted if all the fighting occurs
between two or three fields on the peninsula).  We
have implemented the plane set for the upcoming
Operation Husky scenario.  Not only will it give
participants in that venture an opportunity to practice,
but it is one of the most enjoyable plane sets AH offers.

Heh heh.  Even quicker than I predicted (I posted in the staff forum this morning that I expected people to object that there was neither a Seafire nor a Spit 9).

The reason:  We wanted to make the Operation Husky plane set available for people who are practicing for that scenario.  That plane set does not include these planes, at least according to the write-up:

The Allies have various aircraft (P-38G's, Spitfire V's, P-40E's, Hurricane IID's, F4F-4's, B-24J's, Boston III's, TBM-3's, Hurricane I's, FM-2's, and C-47's), ground vehicles (Shermans, M-3's, M-16's, LVTA2's, and LVTA4's), and naval forces (two carrier groups and two battleship groups) at their disposal.

The Axis has airpower (Bf 109G-6's, Bf 109G-2's, FW 190A-5's, Bf 110G-2's, C.205's, Ju 88A-4's, Ju 87D-3's, C.202's, and C-47's) and ground vehicles (Panzer IV H's, Ostwinds, and M-3's)

At least, that's one of the reasons!

Re-check the Operation Husky setup. There are two CV groups. The HMS Formadable F4Fs and TBFs, The HMS Indomitable Seafires and TBFs. By the way... We are some of the people practicing for the scenario.:)

Also you said that's one of the reasons. By that I assume you have another reason for keeping the Seafire out of this scenario as well as Operation Torch scenarios? Another Operation that the seafire MkII historically participated in, but is always left out of. I'll never understand why you guys do that.

"Rules writeup is updated. The Indomitable now has Seafires.

Newman is right, though -- Seafire pilots should defnitely think about ways to get range. The CV's start quite a ways out from Sicily.

Squire, cool! -- those are the same references I found in my poking around! Now I feel inept, though, as I have the feeling it didn't take you an hour to find them."

Seems fairly axis weighted, should be a lot of fun anyway. May be a good week for me to learn to fly the pee40 like that Duke guy.;)

But...

If I find a bunch of Hurri dweebs on I'll have to go axis. They're just too much fun to hunt: squirmy, tough, and sharp toothed.

Thanks, Shifty, Seafire IIC now available on carriers.

And OF COURSE you understand why we do that, because you remember what it was like when we didn't.  The AvA isn't like a scenario, which can control proportions of aircraft by assignment.  If the Spit 9 were enabled at all Allied bases, 90 per cent of all Allies would fly them.  We have setups that feature Spits still (and 90% of the pilots fly them), but in other circumstances we try to promote some variety.  So here.  Fortunately, the Seafire is sort of self-restricted to carriers, so we should still get a good cross-representation.

I was toying with the idea of enabling different plane types at different spots around the map - take a look when you get the chance, you'll see what I mean.  That way, if someone was desperate to fly, say, a Spit 9 and someone else really wanted to test his 109G6 against a Spit 9, they could do so.  What do you think?

Oldman

I think offering different planes at different points of the map is a good idea.

One problem I see with leaving the Seafire MkII out of scenarios where it was historically present is, you'll include the Spit V in the very same scenario. The Seafire II as we have in AH is a navalized version of the
Spit V  not the Spit IX or later versions.

Speaking of the Spit IX I'm not certain the 90% of Allies would fly them. I think you'll have a bigger problem with Hurri IIs. Until I joined 880 I never flew spits when Allied in the AVA.  I also don't believe for one minute that  Spitfires cause the numbers to drop in the arena on ethier side. There are a lot of factors that led to AVA becoming a ghost town. It seems right now the arena is off it's knees and coming to it's feet a bit. I hope it continues.

I've been running an idea through my head lately. Most setups have the LW vs RAF/RN and USAAF. or LW vs VVS, or IJ vs USAAF,USN/USMC and even RAF/RN thrown in occasionally.

I think this has been tried before, but to make setups more interesting and less overwhelming for one side or the other. What would people think of thining the combatants a bit. Like a pure RAF vs LW setup, followed by a USAAF vs Italian AF, IJN vs USN only or USAAF only, or RAF only? LW vs VVs , VVs vs Finish AF only.

A typical setup would be N Africa 1943 RAF Hurri, Spit, and P-40, and against Italian 202s and 205s. Follow up the next week with a USAAF vs LW, and so on. The point being never mix the RAF and USAAF against the Luftwaffe, never mix the USN and USAAF against the IJs. A slightly more limited plane set focusing a little sharper on the smaller individual plane matchups. Try and focus no more than three fighter model types on etheir side.

Just an idea.

Thanks for adding the Seafire OM.

I just want and f-15 or something so I can hold my own against the goose stepping flyboys :)

Looks like fun.  I'll try to make more time to be around this week

I'll try to get some of the Finns in there for the earlier hours, since some of us have signed up to fly the scenario. :)

Planeset looks exciting even if there wasn't a scenario coming up for which to practise.

Thank you, Oldman.

Hi Oldman,

This is truly a very good idea and one that, if possible, could be backed up by historical squadrons allocation to determined airfields. Bombers on bomber airfields, fighters of a certain model at others, all free to land at, but available aircraft only at the original fields.

This would be extremely positive to AvA, IMHO.

Also Shifty's idea is very interesting and we should consider it very seriously. It might turn out very interesting.

About the Spitfire IX, it was really a very common aircraft in Italy at this stage. Real 249 was using P-51 B's in the Balcans by this time, more or less...

We will be here more often, numbers allowing...

Yesterday I logged in and there were only two pilots online, flying Allied. I decided to login as ax....tchoo!, a...tchooo, axizz, and to my surprise it was only a TBM bombing the field and getting hammered by ack...I stepped on my zeke's throttle to try to get him before ack and, to my surprise, he just started to spiral to the ground and pancaked...I didn't fired a round and I got the kill...

But the best was yet to come:

I saluted the guy - well he was flying a bomber, unescorted, in hostile territory  - and he called me every name, acusing of having shot him down in his chute!!!! I wondered if the guy knows about proxy kills?...Or open his chute?...LOL

You know me guys, some of you for years, can you imagine my surprise? Well, this is the kind of "pilots" that we have flying around in AvA lately...And the other guy logged off...I had to go to another arena to find some action...Oh well, what can we do?

I'll keep checking in and try to give someone a 38 to shoot at.  I stopped in this last week but missed whatever action there was to be had.

Heh.  The Husky setup features one uber Allied plane (38G) and a number of planes that can hold their own if flown sensibly.  I like the plane set, the scenario should be a gas.  For both sides there are no really easy planes, except possibly the IIC, which is meat for someone who has met it before, and the 205, which doesn't have a lot of high-speed competition on the Allied side.

Will study the different-planes-in-different-places concept, would love to have some concrete suggestions (no mafia jokes, please).

I flew both allied and axis tonight and to be honest I think the setup is about right. Some really tough fights on both sides of the fence.
Great Setup OM :) :aok

..um...arrr....probably things like fuel burn rate are NOT the same at the moment.  Look at the end of the MOTD, I posted the important settings there.  Let us know what needs to be changed, and one of us ought to be able to get in there sometime on Saturday to alter them.

Yes, the arena is badly porked.  I tried reloading the tables, resetting the countries, even rebooting the arena, but nothing seems to be working.

This happened once before that I know of, and it was a setting at HTC's end.  I'll call Skuzzy tomorrow.
