Title: Critters
Post by: BlueJ1 on May 11, 2007, 07:25:41 PM
So far Ive been in San Diego almost 4 weeks now. And Ive seen more wild animals, bugs, fish, and lizards here then most people see at the zoo.

Cockroaches- Our barracks has them. No the small little ones Im used to seeing back up in the North East. These things are huge! A good 3 inches long. Their fast too.

Lizards- All over the place. Almost as common as bugs on the island here.

Dolphins- Went to beach other day. A pod of dolphins came in within a few feet of us to check us out. Even if it is a dolphin. Im not afriad to admit that this freshwater boy was still afraid of them. Something about being a wild animal thats pretty big that can easily kick my arse in the water...

Sharks- Went swimming at beach today. Saw a good size nurse shark while we were wading out. Then we waded back in. :D

Stingrays- All over. Walk out into the water and your bound to scare up a few. Learned to shuffle feet as you walk out. Shipmate learned the hard way and stepped on one. Stung in foot. No major damage. Just a free trip to ER.

Jackrabbits- The size of small dogs. There must be thousands of them on the island. No hunting on the island must allow their numbers to explode.

Groundhogs?- We got these small furry little animals that look like a mix of groundhog and parriedog. Small little guys. love digging holes in the golf course here.

And heres todays addition to my little zoo. Found her in my room up next to the vent. I hate spiders and Im surprised I had the guts to put her in a bottle. Let alone a black widow. I'll take a better picture later with a real camera. Cellphones are lousy for close in pictures.

Yup.

Not to mention the gazillion wasps and other flying insects.

But our mexican food is better.

Interesting to hear from a fellow NorthEasterner.

Im used to camping here where there isn't a poisinous thing up here....spider or snake wise.

I remember seeing jackrabbits while at Lackland AFB, they were enjoying the shade under the many static aircraft there.

Come to AZ.  Widows stay in their web so once you've located them, you know where to find them.  Scorpions though... creepy.  They crawl along the ceiling as easily as they crawl on the floor.

No mosquitoes on the island here!

Just poisonous stuff.

yawn. other than the groundhogs, i've never actually seen any of those (or rats)
even if they were up here, they wouldnt seem like much next to the real wildlife.

Sounds like the Beta for Australia

JHOOKT:  You got 30/30 punishment for hitting a jackrabbit?  Jesus, californicate has seriously gone to the dogs... much worse than when I first hated it 40 years ago

And just how far did you have to chase him before you squashed it?

Speaking of San Diego, first time we visited Texas, outside the motel door I saw the wife and kids squatting around some kind of critter.  "Look at the cute pinching bug," my wife said.

I yanked them away from the scorpion and began what would be Family Safety Lecture No. 4,812 out of an eventual series that now rivals the number of posts in the Aces High Bulletin Board.

Must have worked.  Nobody ever got "pinched."

Now son lives in Kaliforniya and I don't have to worry about anything except occasional mountain lion pouncing on jogger.

Much safer than the naive pilgrims in the backwoods of Alaska who try to make nice with grizzly bears.  That's what happens if ya read too much Goldilocks.

CA to TX to AK -- just a minor hijacking.
