Now, I dont have more than 10 minutes in the La-7, so I dont know JUST how n00by it is. But last night I spent the night flying a P-51D... and I gotta say, compared to my Bf-109 G-6, that pony flies itself! Is it just me, or is the Pony too good for its ENY? An oppinion poll.

There are several like that.

no

Run away while you can.
You have stumbled into the 1945 plane set (yes, yes, I know, they were introduced in 44, I'm focusing on what was flying at war's end). Your combat capabilities will become eroded if you stay here. Get back in your G6 quickly.

lol. Im actually about to give the Yak 9 a try. Is that another flies-itself plane?
-
Try the jug it flys it self :) Only way I could possibly get a kill in it.:D

All American planes have an aerial version of that self-driving satellite GPS box that Semi-Trailers had in the Simpsons. Where do you think they got the idea?

You are comparing a 1943 airplane (109G-6) to late 1944 airplane (P-51D)
Better stick with 109G-14 (late 1944) to fite late war stuff.

Actually, I find more sucess with the G-6 than the G-14

Try stall fighting. You'll see the P-51 is not so hot there. A Messerschmitt will beat a P-51 in a stall fight.

lol. Im not suicidal.

Since I am a duellist by nature, I rate the P-51 as one of the four hardest ships to fly in this game. Of course if all you do is pick off the cripples, or fight from numerical advantage, then yes it is rather easy due to the speed. But then that makes the FW-190 even more "easy," because it does all that better than the P-51 at normal altitudes.

I was flying it against 3v1 odds over TT.

but he'll get picked right away if he gets too slow... let's say in a 10 vs 10 furball.

The P51 is good, if u know to handle it, but you realy should fly a la7 a bit more, that will answer your question.
If you be more successfull in the G6 than G14, you might fly it only in and above rathed altitude. Otherwise the G14 is clearly the MUCH better plane.

Power-wise, yes, but I find I get much more maneuverability out of the G-6
-
i must say as a p51 pilot myself u can fly it two ways
A: into a furball to die seconds later
B: set up a slashing style attack and or a E fight
use angles to your advantage.
i prefer B snd trust me ponys are easy targets so dont so something stupid like slow speed turn fight in a furball
I must say though that to duel a 51 against a comprable foe is quite dificult and requires great amounts of skill as the p51 has very slugish reactions at slow speed but at high speed it can out turn almost anything with 1 notch flaps or combat flaps. And remember most of all pony accelarets as fast as a dead cow one of slowest accelarating fighters in game so plane an egress before getting in to trouble
play smart live long :)
btw (hijack) great fights benny) unhijack

Hi,
the G6 only turn a bit more tight, while the rollratio is the same and the G14īs acceleration and speed is good above that of the G6 and most other AH planes.
The biggest mistake people make while trying to dogfight with the 109īs and specialy while flying the G14 and K4 is to keep full power. This stop the planes to decelerate and to turn as tight needed. As result they often overshoot and end in front of the enemy. If you wanna turnfight in a 109G14, you often need to reduce the power to zero and the G14īs acceleration make such manouvers less dangerus, cause you can gain distance again very fast.
Vs the G14 the P51īs have more trouble, but they always can disengage, as long as they have altitude to gain +400mph, where the 109īs get less manouverable. But for sure the P51 isnt as easy as the La7 in low alt.
In low the La7 accelerate like mad, keep energy like mad, is fast like mad and have an incredible firepower.
Greetings,
Knegel

serenity in those fights you were using the P-51 in the wrong way but you did well.
I find most US planes tend to be fast but lose out on the manouvering side (though most 38 pilots can whoop any plan that comes thier way)
The 51 is not invicable. i've scored a very wide range of kills in my spit IX and Vb.
and last season 51's were my fave meal.

When did the G14 acceleration and speed get above the G6??????
I SEEM to recall running down a few G14's ina G6???? Maybe that was a G2? Remember turn fightin and the G14 just couldn't SEEM to get it's speed back as quickly as the G2 or G6????
Granted the G14 BLEEDS E VERY QUICKLY!!!
Flown both. I SEEM to recall the 14 is SLOW to accelertate? Takes for ever to get up to speed while the G6 SEEMS to get there quicker?
Top speed? Can't recall ever getting the G14 to the rated/reported top speed EVER! Ran it on wep for 10 minutes and NEVER reached 408! Think I got it to 395?
But been awhile since I've flown it.
In my readings the G14 was mainly intended as a GROUND support Aircraft.
IMHO the ground attack role required more armour and the extra weight and the bulges make it SLOWER to accelerate, and thus it CAN become a wallowing PIG real quick!
IMHO the G10 would and should have been the plane and NOT the G14.
Argued this before with others BUT the G10 has a cleaner skin and doesn't weigh quite as much?!?!?
Therefore even with the same engine the G10 SHOULD out ACCELERATE the G14!! Otherwise the LAWS of physics, and areodynamics are LIE'S?!?!?!?
AND the G10 SHOULD have a slightly higher top speed then the G14. Probably somewhere between the K4 and the G2.............
And a G10 would have the 20mm hub cannon option AND the underwing gonds option.
Pony D should out run the G10 but not by allot. G10 should out manuver the Pony D. As reported in Air Journal by 2 recognized flyers that flew the 2 together. (IIRC Sadly one is now deceased, P38 crash :( )
-
I've asked for a special flashing icon for Ponys that automagically picks up on the anxiety levels of the pilot by the way its flown - speed, g forces, alt, ratio of friendlies to enemies etc so we as a community could sympathise with 99% of the D pilots.
It wouldn't have to be too complicated. From the moment it spawns till it hits about 20k circling in its own base ack it would be pink, or 'I'm scared'. Then when it joines up with 5 other D ponies and heads to a red dar bar it would be greenish yellow, or 'I'm puking with fear'. When they get within icon range of the single red plane with a smoking engine, half the control surfaces missing etc it would be brownish yellow, or 'I'm so scared I've lost control of my bowels'.
Trouble is with this system I cant think of suitable visual representations when they find themselves alone with a con closing on their 6 with nothing to run to, other than spontaneously exploding or 'I'm having a heart attack!'.
-
"In my readings the G14 was mainly intended as a GROUND support Aircraft."
I dont think so. It was used in the Jabo role in 44-45 along with many other LW fighter types, but that was born out of neccesity. Fw190As were used as Jabo as well, but thats not its primary role. P-51s were used as fighter-bombers too, but again, not the primary role.
As for speed the G-14 is the faster a/c, no question. Its also a bit heavier than a G-6.
G-14 vs a P-51, I like it is as long as you work the climb rate and try to get above him.
Vs an LA-7, go vertical, wait for him to screw up or disengage.

The G-14 accelerates considerable faster than G-6, has higher top speed and has a better ROC when engaging WEP.

i have to disagree :p then again, i disagreed with the 47 too :D miss flying with you man :) pony is great fun in a dogfight. it's harder than others, but it can handle itself if the pony pilot know what to do :)

Hmm... there's a REASON that the top ten combined kills plus deaths over the past three months looks like this:
Plane Kills+Deaths K/D
Panzer IV H 805977 0.92
P-51D 213818 1.07
N1K2 209811 1.22
Sherman VC 203661 1.18
Spitfire Mk XVI 191447 1.10
La-7 186009 1.27
Ostwind 152159 1.64
Tiger I 127225 5.52
B-24J 115614 0.41
SeaFire 106616 0.85
P-51D and N1K2 take over for the Spit XVI and La-7 as the new Dweeb planes!

G2 is faster then the G14???
G14 may be faster at top speed then G6 But acceleration SEEMS less.
G14 vs pony????? not wise over 16K in a G14! Not if the pony pilot knows how to fly a pony!
Is that La7 co-e? Goin vertical against a co-e co-alt lala is not wise!

I don't remember it that way?!?!?
Recall G6 gettin up to speed faster? Been in 1 or 2 Co-alt Co-e turn fights flyin a G6 and fightin with G14s and stayed with em till I shot em down. Even when they tried to run.
G14 used to SEEM take forever to get up speed even with wep.
Granted it climbs better then any 109 but the K4 but G2 comes close.
Possible they remodeled it. I'll try it out.

Hi,
as Lusche pointed out, you be wrong regarding your G6/G14 statements.
Depending to the engine, the G14 was in the same class like the G10, it only had a bit more drag, due to the less good cowling.
While the G14 mainly had a the DB605AM and ASM(G14AS), the G10 had mainly the DB605DB(M).
The DB605A was better in around 5000m, while the DB605DB had a bit more power at sealevel and above 6000m.
The Airframe of the G10 and G14 was almost the same, so was the weight and armament.
The G14 also could run with the P51, but this depends to the altitude and outmanouvering depends also much to the altitude and speed while manouvering.
The 109G10/14īs in general was better at slow speed, where they had a good rollratio, stall character and acceleration, while at speeds above 350mph the P51 turned to be the more agile plane.
Greetings,
Knegel

the only reason the pony is so hated is becuase all the noobs come in to the ma and say o wait p51 was best plane in ww2 then they up one. gives use pony drivers a bad name :( Trikky get back in your yak ya noob ;) lol
btw blame skat hes responsible for mosth those kills

The G-14 was a G-6 with MW50.. nothing more, nothing less.
Should outaccelerate the G-6 easily below FTH, the lower the better for the G-14.
Above FTH, G-6 should be slightly better, same power but a bit lighter (no MW50 equipment..)

As with any AH bird, there are those that drive the 51 and those that can really fly that thing.
You'll know when you run up against a great 51 flyer because he can fly it slow, knows how to use the flaps and can do things with it, the usual go 500 MPH, straight, hose everything and run, 51 driver can't.
Same with the Jug pilot, or any other AH bird.
It's those players who don't know how to fly the 51 or any of the high kill birds that give it the bad name because it's a forgiving bird and lets face it, when you come in at light speed into a pile of red, point, shoot and run, you are bound to hit something.
That applies to the guys who do that with LA7s, Spit 16s and N1Ks as well.
Don't blame the plane, blame the folks that give it the bad name.
personally I kinda like getting low and slow in a B Pony from time to time. Makes for a fun challenge.

Thats why i have alot of respect for u guppy and for some of the other guys areound who truly deicated themselves to being good or learning one plane and sticiking with it. I have lots of repect for lotsa guys just not ones who dont wanna learn and just give planes a bad rep

ill sometimes intentially slow myself down to 200 mph and start turning with spits on the deck then when they die they are like wtf u haxor!!
makes for some fun times lol then whines are precious and especially when u fly a 38 low and slow and another slow con jumps u , u climb like forever they stall and boom heheh

Excellent fight today with an F4U4 in my Bf-109 G-6. Neither of us won, but we dried our tanks looping, scissoring, and turning at 15k +.

Pony is fast, and thus survivable, but it's not a very good MA fighter. It is however a very good JaBo. I'm never concerned when I see an enemy P-51 ... perhaps because so far no Pony has managed to shoot me down.

inserts viking into radar finder not yet at least.......
you can expect my pony on ur 6 :)
-
The 51 could/(can) be very dangerous in the right hands.
I took one up for ****s and giggles the other day. I've only flown it twice before (i HATE .50 cal) and It does turn pretty well.
I busted up a K4 and made a Spit8 work for the kill before I was dispatched.
I promptly got back in my 109 after that, but that was still enough to show me that the 51 can be deadly (this was all on the deck, too) if flown with any sort of skill.
I suck with .50s, can't kill a bloody thing with those bastards. Useless weapons! haha.

This is the only way I've seen anyone fly the P-51 successfully (including some very high up on the scoreboards):
If contact is at co-alt, run away. Unless contact is outnumbered 5-1, in which case let the other 4 guys run in and soften him up first. Then dive in on the deadstick, aileron-less brick and take the kill.
If contact is 5K+ below, dive on six and fire-fire-fire in the split second you blast by. Run away until the guy you just whiffed on gives up chasing you. Turn around, catch up, whiff again, run away. Rinse. Repeat. If target is not dead by the time E advantage is squandered and/or you're both on the deck, run home.
Or, just lounge around at 25K waiting for injured RTBs and/or goons.

frosty uve been flying against the wrong guys :)
p51s are great planes but sadly have earned bad names thanks to n00bs look up some of us pony drivers if u wish to see a good p51 fight, ie: anyone from the 412th fs, 4th fg, and pony express
-
As when I'm flying (ie, when motherboard/processor on game machine not fried, like now), the Pony of Choice is the P-51B. Nice ENY of 20. If you can't hit with 4 X .50's, you won't be much better with 6 X .50's.
I don't try to dogfight with it in T&B mode. I use it for high altitude escorts and patrolling edges and approaches to a furball. I fly it as a B&Z. Stay fast. Approach, dive in, take a snap shot, extend. Repeat as necessary.
to those of you that can dogfight low in a Pony.
If I'm in another plane, usually I just jink and force an overshoot of the Ponies in the area while I chase other planes around. I might catch a ping or two, but generally, a Pony coming at my Yak, La-5, or Ki-84 will generally be moving to fast from altitude to stay with my turn.

Weak. sounds to me like the senseless rantings of a guy that can't handle 51's. Most goons are on the deck... can ya even see a goon from 25k?

Something that works against 90% of alt-monkey cherry-picking Ponies:
Let him dive on your 6 until he's ~1-1.5k out. Split-S HARD under him and watch for him to overshoot his dive, then immediately follow with another to reverse. The majority of the time that puts you right on his tail while he's scrambling to pull out of his dive. If you don't bag him or have a shot, grab some alt back while he extends. Generally after 2-3 passes you've got him if he keeps trying to press his attack.
This works against most anything making high-speed diving attacks, although it seems to be most effective against the P-51.
-
Or, turn so you are 45 degrees into him. When he hits D=800, Pull up, roll away from him, deploy flaps and siddle nicely in behind his over-speed, compressed aircraft for a snapshot.

I'll call BS.. have a film of this? A compressed pony is going 500 ish or so. I'd love to see you pull a decent snapshot opportunity with this move. Otherwise, you are typing fiction.

Best post in this thread!
I was gone for a year. Before that there was a fair share of dweebiness in AH, so I am used to it. Since coming back, the amount of incompetent pansified dweebiness in the MA has been astounding. I would certainly agree that the 51 is the new La7. It's a safe bet now that if I see one, he's incompetent with no desire to engage beyond a few ineffectual lame passes, and since that's all they do, they never improve.
The 51 when flown by a good pilot is a very dangerous plane, however. It's just that the MA is so full of pansies that it's hard to find one who can surprise you by what it can do!

Ah yes, but back in AH1 and early AH2 the Pony was a completely different aircraft. It was a rather good turner and had forgiving departure characteristics. Now, after the FM revisions the Pony has a wider turning circle than the 190D (by a few feet) and equally bad departure characteristics.
To clarify: Since I returned to AH I have not been shot down by a Pony (I suspect this will eventually change though).

Ok, thank you for clarifying. You are right about the current pony. It's been emasculated.

Sounds to me like I hit a nerve. Too close to home? :t
When someone flies a 51 this way, what's to "handle"? They never put themselves in harm's way.
I'm not saying it's wrong or cheating. I'm just saying it's common, and most of those who don't fly ponies this way are generally DOA.
Do you disagree?

Always been a Luftwaffe fan. Boom N Zoom is the life for me!

Maybe turn could stand improving, but by a lot of accounts departure in the 51 was even nastier than the Hog owing to the fuselage fuel tank throwing off the CoG.

Try fighting Batfink.

That wasnt my 109, that was a Focke Wulf! They were always the potatos of the bunch...

I have long way to go before one of the best in the Pony. Until I know how to get guys to over shoot me and get decent kill-to-death ratio in 1vs1s (in MA), against great sticks or not, then and only then, would I consider as a good stick.

it's true the p51 does fly it's self i was on a guys tail and i was missing and the it felt like the plane ruudered it's self:aok

I have to ask this since it's brought up. It's hard to really tell on the offline but has the new patch caused negative flying capablities in the pony or still the same? I haven't played in about 6-7 months, online anyway

hey serinity what about the avatar:aok

When you're comparing the P-51D to an Me109, it's not enough to just compare speeds and maneuverability.
P-51 has much better cockpit visibility.
P-51 has better gun ballistics.
P-51 takes more damage.
P-51 carries a lot more ammo.
P-51 carries a lot more fuel.
P-51 can drop flaps at almost any speed.
P-51 does not compress as bad as the 109.
Maybe it's me or my joystick setup, but (to me) at similar low speeds or high angles of attack, the P-51 just gets mushy at the edge of a stall, while the 109 has a nasty and sudden wing drop, which seems to be worsened by those darn slats slapping in and out.
Don't get me wrong... I love the 109 and wish that I could spend more time getting good in it. I can understand why the P-51 is so popular... apart from the psychology of "the best plane of the Good Guys" (I mean, even 15 year olds have heard of Yeager, right?)... because flying it is almost instant gratification. And it is truly fun in that regard.

Another myth that it's not going to die...
109G/K airframe can be pushed to mach .80 with ease. 109s don't compress, the problem is that the controls are not that good at high speed. To escape 500 mph dive use the elevator trim.
-
roger that... poor wording on my part. I guess true compression means that the controls are not effective at all.
I meant that at similar high-speed dives, the P-51 has more control.
